Anyone have any good recomendations? I'm not looking for "bling bling" rap or shit like that, I'm looking for some deep genuine hip hop/ rap. Let's hear it!
Looking for some real hip-hop...
One of the things I've always loved about Eminem is the fact that his songs aren't as shallow as other artists out there. I like a lot of that "Bling bling" style hip-hop you described, but for you I'd recommend Eminem's new album Recovery. It's pretty awesome. That, and The Marshall Mathers LP, which is in my opinion his greatest album. It's about him coming to grips with fame.
"pantera kicks the shit out of any hip-hop i've ever butUm... groove metal is derivative of hip-hop and dance music, so...
I know... but the truth is this; I'm the last person to ask.
"
SICK RIFFS BRAH
but then again i havent heard much hip-hop, because i'm just a dirty white boy who dont know shit. my problem with hip-hop is that most rappers appeal to a..."nice audience" that i'm definitely not part of, and i cant understand the words most black rappers say honestly, and even if i can the lyrics dont appeal to me in most cases.
also i've been listening to the new Wale mixtape and been digging it.
Im in the process of checking out these groups, thanks for all the recommendations!
To you all i recommend: Sage Francis
Shocked and appalled at the lack of Atmosphere love in this thread. Seriously, Atmosphere is the shit. As is almost every other Rhymesayers-related act.
You should check out the Hilltop Hoods, too. The Hard Road Restrung is legitimately one of the best albums I've heard in my life.
Man, there's a lot of good stuff out there. The underground stays strong, but there's still some more main stream sounding dudes out there that also fit the bill as well.
Aesop Rock: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrsj653088E
Madvillain: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewc1hixzYPY
Consequence: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJTMNaDukAE
Jay Electronica: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5AFpQ96jjE
I could go on, but then I'd probably never finish this post.
Aesop Rock, Sage Francis, El-P, Guru, Wu-tang (Gza), MF DOOM/Madvillain
I just woke up and can't remember who I'm leaving out right now, but there's a few.
Deltron 3030 is a must listen for everyone interested in more cerebral rap.
Sage Francis - Human the Death Dance
Felt (Slug & Murs) - Felt 3
Del The Funkee Homosapian -Raps about all sorts of stuff, space, videogames, hanging out with friends etc. (Look for Deltron 3030 in particular, it's a Space-Rap-Opera kinda thing, and it's great)
Immortal Technique - Extremely Left-oriented political rap, Mumia does some interludes on Revolutionary Vol .2 (PS Skip the CD he made w/ DJ Green Lantern, it sucks ass)
Tech N9ne - older stuff will be more suited to what you want - Anghellic, Absolute Power, Vintage Tech. Things like EveryReady and Killer are bit more boastful.
Anything with Kool Kieth or MF Doom (just google them because they both have a ton of alter egos and put out stuff under a lot of names)
haha, that Space Age Pimpin' song is great. and now i know where that dude Milo got it from, his "Space Age Pimpin" is still pretty funny though.
i've also been listening to this Wu-Tang vs the Beatles, it's a great mix especially if you want a new take on some old Wu classics.
this is my favorite track, Killah Priest is just awesome.
also just (probably super old) found this Notorious Big and Frank Sinatra mix that i'm digging.
I had a nice list of everything I listen to, but I can't find it in search. So here we go...
- A Tribe Called Quest (classic)
- Cannibal Ox
- Company Flow
- DOOM/King Geedorah/MF DOOM/Viktor Vaughn/Madvillain (goes by a lot of names, this guy)
- Panacea (very good)
- Blu
- People Under the Stairs
- Giant Panda (fun shit, a little PUTS, a little UD, a touch of ATCQ)
- Ugly Duckling (not really deep, but it's fun without the liquor, drugs, "whips" etc.)
- Junk Science
- De La Soul (also classic)
- One Be Lo
- Superiority Complex (only one album, but it's good)
- Insight
- Binary Star
- The Pharcyde
- 3 Melancholy Gypsys/Living Legends
- Dark Time Sunshine (heady stuff. I can't really make out what each of their songs is about but its different. also, fairly new on the scene)
- Intellekt & Dirty Digits/Dillon (current name is Dillon, but he did one as Intellekt)
- Diverse (his album is good, another one coming sometime soon, I think)
- The Grouch
- Jay Electronica
- Sound Providers
- 7L & Esoteric
- Non-Prophets/Sage Francis
They aren't in any real order, but there you go. Pretty good stuff to start with. Just hit Pandora up and make a station for those you kinda like and you'll find more stuff. That's what I did. lol. And a little sampling...
