I recently got Netflix and want to get into a new TV through the instant streaming.

Which should I watch first? I don't really know much about any of these shows, and have never watched any of them before in my life, but I know they're all (so I've heard) somewhat good.

  • Doctor Who
  • Dexter
  • Lost
  • Heroes
  • Weeds
  • Californication

The first season of Heroes are very good, though the series seemed to fall apart after that. Californication has its moments, I got tired of watching it after a few seasons.

Watch the first four episodes of LOST.

The fourth episode - "Walkabout" - is what turned many sceptics into believers, and when I had to pinpoint the moment when I decided I would watch this show to the end, it is these legendary 45 minutes.

Lost will blow you away, OR if the first four episodes don't do it for you, you have every reason to skip it and don't come back. In that case I'd say go with Dexter.

@SJSchmidt93:
Lost, Heroes and Weeds. Watch them now. Just do one at a time though, so you can immerse yourself in them. Actually, Weeds you don't have to immerse yourself in, it'll be a bit of light relief after Lost and Heroes.

Californication isn't that good...

Doctor Who is shit...Don't put yourself through it.

Haven't seen Dexter, heard good things about it though.

I would say Dexter is the best out of those, but keep in mind that it's very violent and could be disturbing to some people.

Definitely LOST.  Like Meowayne said though, give it a good 4 episodes before you give it up.  The show is absolutely brilliant, but its more methodical pace (especially early on) isn't for everyone.

Oz, The Wire, The Sopranos, Mad Men and Deadwood are 5 of the best shows ever, get them watched instead of childish shit like Dr. Who and the cliffhanger reliant Lost.

As long as you get the DVD set, this doesn't make a difference, and the overall quality is pretty good. Though watching one episode a week (or 2 weeks, I don't know) would be kind of annoying. But damn, that first season is good.

Oh man...ok umm...ugh that's a tough choice. It depends what you like the most. I'd say Lost is the biggest time sink since they end EVERY episode with a cliff hanger so you'll just watch more...and more..and...well you get the idea. It's in its 6th season too. Weeds, I'd say, is the worst one on that list. It's still a great show but eventually I just stopped caring. Lady just makes more and more bad decisions and you're just like...ugh why Nancy why?!

Only the first season of Heroes is really good so you can pound that out pretty quick. There was the writer's strike halfway through one of the seasons then when the writers came back they spent a while just trying to undo the damage. Too 'grand scale' now. So yeah.

I'd say the best choices would be "doctor who" or "californication".
-David Tenant of Doctor who is amazing! Think of it like James bond IN SPACE! Has a bunch of gadgets, every lady wants to screw him and every man wants to be him. Except he's a quirky funny kinda nerdy guy. First season is alright but David Tenant comes in the second season and it just takes off!

-Californication is sort of a "High fidelity" tv show. Guy has a bit of a punk attitude from the 80s and has a real problem with commitment. It has been described as a Modern man's love story. We try our best but we always screwing things up. It's a great show and the only one on your list, other than weeds, which has half an hour episodes...at least without commercials it is.

Then there's Dexter. Not really a "light" show. I'm not sure if I could gorge myself on ONLY Dexter. Might make me a bit loopy. I'd say choose one of the others and watch Dexter at the same. Dexter is very good. Not sure what else to say about that show.

Yeah, I liked the first season, but once they got into the hatch, it all went downhill. Too many episodes where nothing would happen then in the final shot, someone would find something mysterious that wouldn't ever get a resolution.

Dexter is much worse and much shameless with its cliffhangers than Lost.
With Lost, especially in the first two seasons, many Episodes have a very, very good sense of closure and conclusion, and cliffhangers are a natural part of the story and pacing.
Dexter episodes usually have a very clearly defined ending, but then they just tackle on the first minute of the NEXT story onto the end of every episode so that people keep on watching.

@coolarman: I've watched quite a bit of IASIP, and it's hit and miss.

Some episodes are embarrassingly bad, others are simply amazing.

Heroes - Loved the first season then it fell down a slippery slope.

Lost - Watched the first 3 seasons then began to get disinterested.

Doctor Who - at least watch the episode blink, one of the best episodes of any series I have seen.

@MarkWahlberg:  i'm definitely hyped for this... mostly to see if they can tie all the loose ends and make this the best show ever... or make it the worst show ever by having so many unsolved problems.

I haven't seen everything on your list, but the last two seasons of Dr. Who with David Tennant were really stellar.  I haven't seen the newest Dr. episodes yet.  I enjoyed Psych, but it's kind of a one-trick pony in my opinion.  It's good fun but nothing you need to commit yourself too.  Heroes really isn't worth your time anymore.  The first season was good, the second okay and third just bored me to tears.  I haven't seen any of the 4th.

I have two more you might want to consider, Breaking Bad and Stargate UniverseBreaking Bad is on AMC cable channel.  It's about a high school teacher who becomes a drug chemist.  It's stars Malcom in the Middle's dad, Bryan Cranston.  It's two seasons deep so far with the third to begin in March.  Stargate Universe is a dark scifi drama set in the familiar franchise universe.  It draws much more from Battlestar Galactica than either of the previous Stargate series.   Also, unlike the previous shows, there is a long story arc to the series.  In other words, one show leads to the next.  It's still in the middle of season 1.

Try this.

Man, following this story for the last five years was just so goddamn good. And yes, I know, THIS VIDEO CONTAINS SPOILERS, but it is by far the best Lost-Trailer out there, and I would say that without knowing what you're looking at and with only seeing it once, it won't ruin anyone's enjoyment of the series.

So I went ahead and watched the first two episoes of Dexter and find that, while it's nothing mind-blowning or amazing, it's a solid show.

I find the story a little hard to follow and confusing, but I still like it.

Start watching Lost. You're only a million seasons behind. It'll take a week or two of non-stop watching to get caught up.

Lost I hear is good.

Weeds... it's the fuckest uppest.
