@Meteora: I've got a couple of friends in the NY area who apparently have grown up with that pronunciation associated with the name. I'm pretty sure that Shoemaker does on occasion too. But believe me, I share your sentiments.
I'd like to state for the record how weird it felt trying to write the two primary pronunciations for the word "Mario" and apologize for any mistakes made.
Mair-ee-oh is just plain wrong, there no choice in how it's pronounced other than slight differences in dialect. It's Ma-ree-oh or Mar-ee-oh, which really, you can barely tell the difference between.
