Meteorite Explodes Over Central Russia

#1 Edited by joshthebear (2325 posts) - 3 months, 3 days ago

So yeah, this is kind of insane. A massive meteorite exploded over Central Russia and did some crazy damage. Get your bug out bags ready duders, the end is nigh.

"Brightly burning rocks could be seen for hundreds of kilometres as they crashed into the Ural region.

Chelyabinsk residents reported shaking ground, windows being shattered and car alarms being set off during the shower."

So the sound is made by the entry into the atmosphere? Also there were no casualties right? I hope not

Edit: I read the news there were injured people but from broken glass. Crazy man!

#7 Posted by joshthebear (2325 posts) - 3 months, 3 days ago

@aetheldod: Doesn't sound like any casualties, although there is reports of over a hundred injured mainly from broken glass.

Lots of dash cams and pictures on this blog.

Fuck me, that's ... I kind of don't know. I want to say that's kind of cool, but that's also scary of fuck. Was there any warning to it, any scientist with an eye to a telescope who went "That looks bigger than I remember"?

It can't have been too big of an object as well, relatively speaking. It'll be interesting, seeing the commentary on it and its properties.

Wow, wild. Can't even imagine walking down the street and seeing/hearing that. Scary shit.

And I guess it's not the meteor we were expecting to pass over today...that sounds like bad news.

Does anyone have video of the crater?

#21 Posted by joshthebear (2325 posts) - 3 months, 3 days ago

@aegon: It doesn't look like there is any at the moment, although I'm sure something will come out over the course of the day.

#22 Posted by Nictel (1338 posts) - 3 months, 3 days ago

I heard about a meteor going pass the earth in a 'near miss' on the radio yesterday. I wonder if this is related.

#23 Posted by probablytuna (2506 posts) - 3 months, 3 days ago

That must be one terrifying sight. Hot damn!

#24 Posted by TheHT (8077 posts) - 3 months, 3 days ago

@aegon: @joshthebear: I thought the meteor didn't make it through the atmosphere. If so there wouldn't be a crater per se, but there may be damage from meteorites.

Yeah, this is why the human race has to collectively start shoveling funds into our space programs and developing some sort of solutions to these kinds of problems ASAP. Maybe this time it is a small meteorite, but eventually it's going to be a massive meteor with the power to take out all of Russia that we will have to deal with.

Man that video of the dude driving on the highway is crazy. What a feeling it must be to be casually driving and then BLAM a fucking meteor falls from the sky. Insane.

This seems to be the crater, not really sure, because it's Russia: http://vk.com/video4046055_164571326?hash=183b7e98615893d0

According to some ham radio nerds, UVB-76 stopped broadcasting when the meteorite hit.
