Most Interesting War?

So im a big war buff. i honestly couldnt tell you what it is i find so interesting but i do. by far i think the most interesting war was the Cold War. yes, i know it's not technically a war in th same way WW2 or The Civil War was. but i think it's more incredible than anything else. i just love all the spies,vietnam and end of the world stuff involved with it. my second choice would have to be the American Revolution. not only was it a important part of my country's history, i think it ushered in a change in the entire world.

but thats just my two cents,what are yours?

I think it's gotta be WW2. So much amazing strategy and deception, I mean operation mincemeat alone was fucking nuts, not to mention that was thought up by none other than Ian Fleming. Also, the fact that they set up fake tanks, and set up empty tents to confuse spy planes is just, well kinda awe-inspiring.

WWII is rich with heroic stories of soldiers and civilians and is probably the best example of the world coming together for a single cause. It defined what a "traditional" war is and the lessons we learned on urban, mounted, mountain, desert, jungle, and dismounted combat still apply today. And we used inflatable tanks to deceive Hitler on our plans to invade France. I mean, that's fucking cool.

@EpicSteve: I'd say WWII is also easily romanticized and discussed because it was both a war where so much seemed at stake and the delineation between good and evil so clearly defined.

Which isn't to say shady shit didn't happen.

@EpicSteve: i fully agree that WW2 is the "gold" standard of war. never in the history of mankind has there been a war as huge and epic and terrifying as WW2.

i just personally prefer the cold war. i mean sure,WW2 was great and all,but the human race allmost ended several times during the cold war.or how about the Civil War? that was a major turning point in the history of the world.sure, it was all confined to the states but if things had turned out diffrently,theres not doubt in my mind that we would live in a drasticlly diffrent world.

@CrossTheAtlantic: exactly.it's so easy to look at WW2 and think it was the ultimate battle between good and evil but there was alot of grey involved. america putting the japs in camps and the fact that the russian were allmost as bad as the Nazi's.

WWII and The Cold War are wars that I don't think and hope will ever be matched.

@DoctorDanger99: I will say I did my final paper in American History on the Cold War, specifically, the nuclear proliferation aspect. It was a fascinating time period that really shaped society on a global scale. I the US democratic side still had their hints of the White man's burden lingering around, so they felt compelled to aid the incompetent, evil communists and elevate them to our level of being.

American Civil War is pretty cool with all that fight for independence and then some American on American war going down.

The first World War

I'm a big fan of anything related to the American Revolution. I just love the set up, the self-motivation of allied partners and how a bunch of losers found victory at a decisive hour thanks to some luck and the help of a few "cheese-eating surrender monkeys".

Another one that I find fascinating is the Napoleonic Wars. He was defeated and sent into exile, but escaped and came back for "round two"! How crazy is that?

There's The Hundred Years War between 1337 and 1453. It was mostly just an endless exchange of hostilities between England and France but it went on for so long that it deserves note. The reign of the armored knight on the battlefield came to an end during this period as the weapons of war evolved beyond their usefulness. If you like Shakespeare's Henry V (or the movie by Kenneth Branagh), that takes place during this time.

Finally, there's the Sengoku Period or the Warring States Period in Japan where various factions fought to become the next Shogun. It lasted on and off from the mid 14th Century until the start of the 17th Century. This is the time where Japanese samurai were at their best. Oda Nobunaga tried to unify the nation but was murdered by one of his own generals.

The Star Wars.

WW2 is heroic and epic if you're talking about the European Front. If you're talking about the Pacific Front it's as grim as WW1.

I like old Roman wars. The reach of Rome despite the technology of the time was something to behold. I also like how their presence changed the Celts and Germanic tribes, the narrative of the rise and the fall.

Actually, no, I like Frankish wars more. Because the low middle ages and the migration are poorly understood and interesting as a transitional period for Europe.

I'm really into the Cold War, and specifically I think Vietnam was pretty fascinating. The mishandling of military power, underestimation of a dedicated liberation movement, the domestic anti-war movement, it really has everything.

I also think the hundred years war. You get more war for your dollar.

@President_Barackbar: totally. if you think of it as a packaged deal,Cold War has it beat. vietnam,spies,assassinations,russia,cuba,che, berlin wall,nuclear war,the destruction of all human life, how it all effected the culture of the 60's. it was amazing.

The World War and it's highly anticipated sequel The World War Two were superbly directed and produced, I can't wait for the final thrilling chapter in the trilogy.

The Greco-Persian Wars (499-448 BC) were really interesting, the Battle of Marathon was pretty dope.

Allow me to answer this question with a book recommendation. The History of the Peloponnesian War by Thucydides. The vast majority of greek historical texts that came before and after this are more concerned in being porn novellas for national socialists than documenting history, so it's quite impressive that this 2500 year old book gives an objective and unbiased first account view of a war.

For me it's WWI, II and the Cold War simply because how interesting I find it that a lot of the technology we take for granted today came out of the various R&D departments of the world during those wars.

I was gonna be a smart ass and post a picture of War from Darksiders, but then I remembered that War is probably the least interesting part of that game.

So, I'm gonna go with The Apocalypse War.

Most interesting wars too me are the ancient battles from history. I just really really enjoy the stuff and basically since the invention of firearms I just dont find actual war history interesting.

I agree. I find the Vietnam War very fascinating from multiple perspectives. WWII is always awe-inspiring of course, with the utter scale of that conflict and the death toll. Unless shit goes real bad, that will probably remain humanity's bloodiest days for a long while.

World War I is pretty interesting because of some of the tangential stuff related to it.  For example, while everyone knows that Britain and France drew up lines to carve up the Middle East for the sake of oil, did you know that Germany had France's spot, and one day before the deal between the two countries were finalized, Ferdinand was assassinated?

American Civil War

I have a soft spot for the crusades. Once you look at it from the perspective of the Arabs it changes from a Christian slaughter of infidels to the best Song of Ice and Fire book ever!

I love the scale of The Cold War. The concept of cold warfare, from a political point of view is already pretty cool, and in that scale, all the political actions, all the spies, the propaganda, these two countries, showing their power, making the world afraid of the end... It was something pretty amazing.
I also enjoy World War I, to the point where i like to call it The Great War. The tactics, adapting to a new technology and the political background make for some great stories. I don't like World War II very much, but what i do enjoy is seeing Brazil's actions in World War II it was something pretty grey, it's a cool subject to study.

World War II. I mean, just think about this for a moment. Not only did we have a WORLD-WIDE WAR. But they made a sequel! They sequelized a war! WWII wins, hands down.

80's to early 90's Scandinavia was ravaged by a war of many participating factions, all put against one common enemy = The kids who only had an Atari computer for games and fun. I love how you are talking about morality and then proceed to call the Japanese Japs, which is a derogatory term.

The Russian Civil Revolution in the early 1900s has always fascinated me.

Well the Great Wars aren't called Great for no reason, WWI for me though. Civil wars are the ugliest though.
