Any tips? Do you guys have any idea why this is happening? I already went through this list:

  • Battery is charged
  • The screen is fine
  • I didn't dip it in water

It just didn't turn on one day, it seems like it cycles through on and off, and I think it would do it forever if I don't turn it off. Could it be something serious? Like the motherboard or RAM going bad?

Is it wise to shell out some dough and have someone fix it?

Well I had a similar issue with my stationary not long ago, it later turned out to be the motherboard breaking down on me.

Maybe describing the issue more thoroughly will increase your chances of help; what happens when you try to start it up? What does the screen say? How long has it been doing it? What do you think made your computer go batshit insane, if I may phrase myself in that manor.

Kick it. Kicking electrical equipment will solve any and all problems with it.

Well, My desktop turned on by itself and it turned out to be a Trojan virus, and we had call the people that we got our security program from (Norton, McAfee, Windows Live OneCare, CyberDefender) to fix it.  I don't think you have a Trojan though.

My laptop didn't want to turn on one day, and all I did was remove the computers battery with ease from the bottom of the laptop, put it back in, then hit the power button on the laptop, and then it turned on.  I did a virus scan on it, and there was nothing wrong.  It ran normally ever since. Maybe you need to do the battery trick, but perhaps someone else can help you better than I can. :D I just came up with a weird, cheap way to fix mine to where it would turn on.

The screen doesn't turn on, it's just the keyboard has some lights for media functionality and they go on, then I hear the hard drive make some noises, but it just gets stuck doing that.

@Tireyo643 I did do that, no dice.

Hmm weird.. maybe there's a loose connection inside. I don't think you can do anything but taking it to a repair shop and let them take a look at it.

That really bites.  I know when I try to play with my built in Webcam, my computer makes loud yetti-like noises and crashes.  Then I turn on the laptop, and it acts like nothing happened!  Needless to say that I don't use that program anymore!  I have a weird computer just like you apparently!

I actually had that problem with the screen not turning on.  It wasn't working for one whole day, then it decides to work the next day after two more attempts.

I hope that your laptop will work again.  If it doesn't, find or call someone that knows their computers or specialist to help you with your problem.

is it turning on at all?! Like, are you getting a

windows failed to load
message, or screen tearing or anything at all? Or does the power button just do nothing. Because in that case maybe you need a new power button?

Weirdly, my laptop used to not turn on without the power cord attached, just would not do it.

Then 3 days ago, I turn it on and without realising it, forgot to plug it in, I was like WTF?!?! And it seems to turn on fine now without the power lead. Really weird. Never known why it wouldnt turn on :S

Did you try hooking it up to an external monitor.  I'm not sure how you figured out that the screen was good if the Laptop doesnt turn on.  Some times the screens go bad on laptops.  If it's not that, it could be a bad power supply or mobo.  Do you have memory in the expantion port?  If you do, take it out and se what happens.

As far as repairs go, we all would need to know the type of laptop and how old.  It might be more worthwhile just buying a new one with laptop prices so low these days.

Nothing on the expansion port, but I have this feeling that it is related to the screen, will try that. And it's an HP laptop from 2006.

@Sweep The screen doesn't turn on. But I hear the hard disk and other sounds you normally hear when a laptop turns on, and the "keyboard media" lights go on.

EDIT: I tried turning on the laptop again, and it just cycles it looks like it's gonna turn on but then it goes off, then by itself it turns on and so on.

Anything in the CD/DVD drive?  Asking this because one of my dad's friends had a laptop problem that it wouldn't boot into Windows because the BIOS was set to boot from disc drive first.  He had an Evanescence CD in it. LOL.

@artofwar420: That sounds more and more like a power supply problem.  I'm not sure if it's within the converter or if it's a problem with the connection port on the PC. It really sounds like your laptops not quite getting enough juice to turn on.

If you're at all handy you could get a multimeter for $15 - $20 and check the amp output of the power supply.  If it's too low or fluctuating then you've found your problem.

Or have a local PC shop look at it and diagnose it.  They'll tell you what's wrong with it.  If it costs too much to fix then trash it.

I had a very similar problem yesterday. I was watching the ER, when all of a sudden my laptop just shut off. It didn't even go through a hibernating screen or log off screen. The monitor just went black and everything was off. I tried to restart it, but the screen would turn on for 15 seconds, but then shut off again. All the screen would display was the underscore at the top left part of the screen, everything else was black. I tried to start it up about 3 more times, but all it did was the same thing.

I let it sit for about an hour, tried it again, it did a little stutter, but eventually booted up to the windows screen. Now everything works fine. I ran a virus scan to check it out, but nothing popped up. I backed up all my files just in case I wouldn't be so lucky next time. I know I wasn't low on battery since it was plugged in and I had checked the battery life not too long before it freaked out and it said 100%.

@artofwar420:   I just thought of something.  You could sell off the individual parts of the old laptop to pay for the Netbook.  A screen alone can go for $70 or more!
