Back on June 30th, Alice In Chains released "A Looking In View", the first single from their album Black Gives Way To Blue, due out on September 29th, 2009.  This is, obviously, the first album with new singer William DuVall.

I'm curious to see what you, the Giant Bomb community, think about the new Alice In Chains.  Should they have kept the name or gone with something different?  Do you think the new Alice in Chains holds up against the old Alice in Chains?

I'll tell you what I DO know:  this song KICKS FUCKING ASS!!!  It's damn good to hear Cantrell, Inez, and Kinney back together...but it's even better to hear that DuVall fits the mix very well.

*EDIT*  HOLY SHIT!  Um...when I posted this up, I hadn't actually the music video...just heard the song.  It would appear that YouTube allows nudity in videos from Alice in Chains?!

Wow, thats actualy pretty good. Never expected them to still sound like Alice in Chains after all this time.

Youtube has always allowed Nudity, Im not exactly sure what the rules for showing it are though. I think it has to be in a music video, documentry, or health video. There is a Marilyn Manson video on there that is basicly a porn.

@Atramentous: Well, I knew that the video for Gojira's "Vacuity" was allowed to do it on YouTube and...oddly enough...MySpace, and that kind of made me double take.  Still...I was just shocked by it for a minute.  The video is a damn good AiC video, though.  That hand knocking on the door at the beginning was PERFECT!!!

I normaly dont like new singers in bands. I think if the singer leaves then you should make a new band, but this guy fits for some reason. The only other band that I didnt hate a singer swap in was The Misfits, and thats becouse Danzig is an over rated hack who has a shit voice.

Just looked and the video is "Heart Shaped Glasses" The song is horrible and the video is even worse but its pull on porn. Gotta wonder just what is acceptable under the lable of "art" on youtube.

@Atramentous: I'm 50/50 about new singers.  I look at Norma Jean and go "glad Josh Scolin isn't in that anymore"...but then I look at bands like Velvet Revolver and think "fuckin' WHY?!".  With AiC, it's a bit of a different situation.  Layne's dead.  Nonetheless, Will's vocals work with Jerry's for a great AiC harmony that only AiC seems to be able to EVER pull off!!!

As for that Manson video, I'm not interested anyways.  Fuck Manson and his retarded shit.

I think a lot of people were worried because of DuVall's previous band...which can only be described by a quote from Jeff:  "sucks shit through a pipe labeled shit delivery system".  However, I had seen a live video of him performing "Rain When I Die" (my favorite AiC song) and I was thoroughly fucking impressed.  I just didn't know how the new shit was going to turn out, as Cantrell is always a bit here or there with his music.

Just look at the differences between Boggy Depot and Degradation Trip...which of the two, I personally enjoy Boggy Depot more...because "My Song" is fucking brilliant!

I still have to pick up Cantrell's solo stuff, as well as pretty much all of Alice In Chains' stuff, excluding Dirt.

@Arkthemaniac: Boggy Depot is a very different kind of album.  Nothing like Alice in Chains.  It's one of the reasons I enjoyed it a lot - hearing Cantrell spread outside of the mud-rock sound of AiC was a nice breath of fresh air.  It's not for everyone, though.  Degradation Trip is more along the lines of "traditional" Cantrell.

Still, nothing beats "My Song" from Cantrell's solo stuff for me:

Good stuff. Well, anyways, this actually has me hopeful that I could buy a new album this year. How exciting. If it disappoints like the last one did (Zeitgeist), I'm gonna flip out. Though, that doesn't seem to be the case.

That was one intense video, wow.  And they sound very much like the Alice In Chains I dug from back in the day....unexpected but very cool. I'll keep an eye out for the Sept. release now...thanks jacob 187.

I don't think the intro sound 'that' Alice in Chainsy, but overall it differently sound like Alice in Chains song. I think the two singers and strange harmonics is a big part of their sound - even if they did get a new singer.

Anyway, I am differently intrigued :-)

Edit: Also remember I used to jam Jerry Cantrell's - My Song since it was such an ridiculous easy riff you easily fell back into, if you wasn't playing anything particular :-)

Wow, awesome! I didn't know about this and I really like AiC. I was impressed with the new song, had the awesome vocal harmonies and Cantrell riffs I would expect.

The Song itself is 100% Alice in Chains, but the singer.. I dunno. Layne gave it that distint sound to it, very grundgy, edgy and deep. This guy sounds like hes trying to do his best impersonation at it. good song though, just the singer i'm iffy about.

@zityz: Are we listening to the same song?  I didn't hear him trying to be Layne at all.  I heard him harmonizing with Jerry's vocals, which is something that Layne did as well.  If that means they end up singing in the same range, then they end up singing in the same range.

Oh don't bash on me... Just my opinion... I thought the music was pretty good... But the lyrics were just a little to draggy and repetitive for me

@Jesus: I will say that the song could've been shorter and still been fine from it.  7 minutes seems a bit long for the same riff...  Then again, it's mud-rock.  lol  That's what happens when you write like you're on heroin, eh?

yeah ... I might have gone too far saying it was terrible actually ... It was alright... But something about it was just really draggy.. too long and repetitive ... I do love the old alice in chains though.. So I'm not a hater here lol

Meh, it was ok.  But I have to agree that 7 minutes is a little too long for an AiC song.

@Jesus: Old Alice in Chains wasn't always much different than this.  Mud-rock is known for being relatively repetitive...so to speak.

The more I listen to it, the more I'm impressed with DuVall, especially on the chorus.

???  I don't think I understand that phrase one bit.  This sounds like Alice in Chains.  I think they are trying to sound like Alice in Chains would sound...and frankly, whether that's popular or not is not up to the band...but to the people who listen to them and buy their records.

I just mean the whole lets not make a new band lets just grab a new singer Van Halen style.  I have never cared for this.  In my opinion the singer is like %50 of the sound.  I always feel when bands do this its them being afraid of starting over, scared there fans won't notice the name change, etc. I understand it but I personnaly don't respect that attitude.  But yea the video sounds good and I enjoyed there old stuff so I'll probably pick it up, I just would rather them get a new name for the band instead of keeping the Alice in Chains name, but hell a lot of bands that I like have done it, GNR, Megadeth, Van Halen.

I am hardly a legitimate music critic in any sense of the word, and I will not pretend to be one now, but I will say that I liked old Alice in Chains very much and I also like this song. I would have been disappointed if the new guy tried too hard to sound like Layne Staley. That would have been a poor choice and they successfully avoided it.

I've been listening to the new album, all day! It's fantastic, I'm really glad that the album didn't turn out to be a disaster.
