January 2009 Update - The ratings tool for notifying moderators has been disabled.  Negative ratings will no longer hide posts, either.  There is a new system in development.  I'm leaving this post around though just because I like kitties.  - Mike

NEWSFLASH! DO NOT ABUSE THE VOTING TOOLS. JUST BECAUSE YOU DON'T THINK THAT PURPLE GIRAFFES HAVE GIVEN MAJOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO EXISTENTIALISM DOESN'T GIVE YOU GOOD REASON TO DOWN VOTE SOMEONE. IF A PERSON ADEQUATELY SUPPORTS THEIR POSITION CONCERNING PURPLE GIRAFFES OR EXISTENTIALISM, SIMPLY DISAGREE!
WHEN YOU REPORT UNNECESSARY POSTS, YOU ONLY CAUSE PROBLEMS!

I'm pleased to announce that there is a new feature on the forums, a sort of Crowd Moderation/Reporting Tool.  The way it works is that the moderators are notified when a post gets a certain number of negative ratings.  That number is subject to change, but for now I'll reveal that the number is not very high at all.  Once  a post gets it's required number of negative ratings, a moderator will be notified to look at it and then he will decide what action to take.

This is an aspect of the site that is vitally important for the community to get involved in, simply because there are so many forums and so few moderators.  When there is a bad post...tell us!  Reasons to negatively rate a post could be inappropriate images, trolling, spamming, attacking other users, or any other situation where you think a moderator needs to be involved.

To rate, click on the - or + icon in the top right hand corner of the post.

In pictures, here's how the system works:

Troll starts acting up

Giant Bombcat!

Users negatively rate the bad post

Once the specified number of negative ratings is reached, a Moderator

checks out the thread and handles business.

Modcat is watching you!

Everyone goes back to business as usual!

Giant Bomb...serious business!

HAHA  funny

but I guess it's a good idea. But why not just do it like most forums do it? Just hit report and report the guy? : )

could lead to report-spamming or unfair reporting, I'd guess. This way, only posts that recieve a large number of negs get full attention.

And you don't think people will abuse this one? People will just rate you down if they don't agree with you.

Yeah, I basically let the cats do all the wiki submissions for me.

True, but the beauty of this system is that nothing is automatic.  People can give you negative ratings all they want, but if there is nothing wrong with your post, then no action will be taken.

Yeah, the negative ratings only put the post on the top of a list, where a moderator can then look at the thread, and make decisive action if necessary.

yes, but, like I said, it's probable only posts with two or more negatives come to the mods attention, and even then, like MB said, it's not automatic, so if it was for some stupid reason, they can ignore it.

Wow great!!

#12 Posted by atejas (3057 posts) -

I'm really upset that the original post didn't get enough negative vote to delete it. For irony's sake.

Yeah, I can see it getting abused a bit, but we just have to trust the overall community here at GiantBomb.

Unfortunately, the first cat isn't actually in Giant Bomb. Photoshop a screenshot of Giant Bomb onto the computer. >_>

what happens when a post that was voted negatively by many users and that when the mod sees it he deems is acceptable?
Will the negative votes be gone or wil lvoting for that comment be halted or something?

edit: how about punishing those who voted negatively on a post thats ok? just an idea of course... hehehe

I thought about it.
#28 Posted by Hamz (6846 posts) -

Just to clarify for some people who feel this can be abused by users. It can in a way but its essentially a way for the community to let the mods know where trouble may be without 20 people all PMing us about the same post or topic or user. Rate a trouble post with the [ - ] and it flags that post or topic into a queue for the forum moderators to judge whether it requires some attention or whatever.

So yes you can flag a users topics enough time just because you dislike them but ultimately its the moderators decision as to what happens to that topic, if its perfectly fine it gets approved if it isn't then specific action will be taken.

We really want users to begin using this feature so it makes it easier and more immediate to get a Moderators attention.

I guarantee you that they waited to do this until someone found those first two cat pictures. Unless I don't get around the net enough...

Should I still negative vote threads I don't want to see on the forum, like GS vs GB threads and GS sucks threads?  I almost see this as losing a feature, instead of gaining one.  With the vote system I was able to post what I thought of a post, but now I'm going to be a bit more reserved in my negative votes, and only do so when I feel actual forum rules have been violated.

This is good for now, but in the future I'd think an actual report button, with penalties for abusing reports, would be the best way to go.

If there are types of posts you don't want to see on the forums, give them negative votes too.  If enough people do that maybe it'll send a message.
