I got a Macbook Pro 15" and I absolutely love it. Great apps that help with productivity (lots of them free or only a dollar) plus I can play games fairly well on it too. Solid batter life (I get six hours of browsing the web, about three or three and a half hours watching videos). They're expensive and I had to put money away a little bit at a time for a while (because I'm paying my way through for the most part) but it's been worth it!

Best to start off with a budget and a list of uses necessary for the laptop to perform first.

Avoid the 13" though, 1280x800 in a [nearly] 2013 purchase is just absurd to me.

Wasn't a big fan of the Lenovo Y430 I bought in 2009. Decent build quality and so-so screen, but bloated with crapware. Also the structure of their customer service is terrible. I had the SD card slot cover get stuck and found their customer help process to be a clusterfuck. People give shit for Dell and HP having awful customer support, but I had a much easier time dealing with those two companies compared to Lenovo.

I really like their Thinkpads though. Durable construction and they usually have upgrades for much better quality screens compared to other laptop manufacturers.

Apple and Lenovo are the two best options out there right now. There are several companies that build laptops especially designed for Ubuntu that are kinda cool, but if you're planning on doing somewhat complex Office work on your machine, the free Office alternatives available on Linux just aren't up to par with the standards on Windows and OS X. That's coming from a guy who really likes Ubuntu as an OS.
