Just exactly what is your reaction to getting needles?

I ask this because of what a close relative of mine is enduring. First though, I am needle-phobic. I man up and still get my flu injections, but I will generally avoid needles like the plague. It never bothered me as a little kid, but as a teen I got glass in my foot and the needle directly in the wound was so horribly painful, I have never been the same.

A few years back a wild kitten but me right through my nail - very painful. As it was, my tetanus injections were not up to date. I was told to get one, knowing it was a pretty painful needle. I knew what could happen if I got an infection, but I still chose to wait and see if I got sick first - pretty stupid really.

As for the more current reason I ask this, my close relative. She has some undiagnosed head pain. Specialist after specialist hasn't found the cause and she is on to another one soon. Painkillers only work so much and it has included trips to the hospital for medication via IV. The latest one was a total of 66 needles into the nerves in her neck.

66 needles!

You can see all the little x's on her neck where they were placed. I had never heard of this method, but they are Glucose injections, prolotherapy I believe, that calm the nerves. Her head felt better, but her neck ached like a bitch.

I can barely face up to 1 needle, no way I could cope with 66 of them. I am not a Ten, but easily an Eight. What about you?

I don't know like a 3 I guess?

I refused to be vaccinated during the swine flue thing...or was it chickens? Either way 9 i guess.

Needles are fine as long as they stay the fuck away from my eyes.

About three as well for me.

Stick it in me man, even if it's in my mouth when I'm at the dentist, just keep that 30k RPM drill away from the base of my tongue, last time you hit it it kinda hurt!

I'd say 11/10. I made keeping a heroin addiction impossible.

I'm fine with them, I can't watch them going into me though.

As long as it's not my eye we cool.

Where does "I find them to be unpleasant, but still go through with them" rank?

Needles don't bother me. I said 2 because I do hate the wait for the nurse to stick the needle in your arm and you feel that slight pinch, but that's about it. Unless the nurse is terrible at her job and sticks it in in such a way that it stings the entire time and feels like she just stabbed you with a rail road spike. Only had that a few times. I contracted TB as a kid and had to take meds for a year as well as go get blood work done on a monthly bases. So by the time it was all over needles were nothing to me.

Probaly about a 6-7.

I really get freaked out when I see that happening in movies or documentaries.

@Contrarian: Zero, but I'm not a drug addict, you jerk. I've got haemophilia so I've learned to administer my own medicine in case I have to. It's been years now since I last had to do it, but you don't forget a thing like that. It's not like it's difficult either.

#15 Posted by JustKamToo (703 posts) -

I hate them and even have to look away when people use then on Tv = /

#16 Posted by Video_Game_King (36272 posts) -

@Contrarian:

7 sounds too high, so I'll go with 6.

#17 Posted by Stonyman65 (2767 posts) -

It doesn't really bother me unless blood is being drawn out. Seeing blood come out of my arm into a tube freaks me out a bit.

Also, seeing a needle penetrate someone's arm on TV always messes with me.

Don't really care, my grandma had them lying around EVERYWHERE when I was growing up so i'm pretty used to them. Also I can knit!

#19 Posted by cutyoface (547 posts) -

I don't really mind them, so about a 2.

#20 Posted by Paindamnation (807 posts) -

Zero, had plenty of IV's in me since I was a kid.

I wasn't trying to be a jerk - I hope you get that. I am sure even I would get used to it if I had to. Glad to hear it has been a while between needles for you.

I would have gone with 11 if you gave me a choice.

3, but if I'm on an Alien ship and they are heading for my eye...100.

Having arthritis, I've had to have needles for all sorts of treatments and blood tests now since I was small. They don't bother me at all, that was actually one of the small awesome things when we had our injections at Secondary School, most the kids were frightened about it but it didn't bother me one bit :D One of the small victories of having arthritis, the only positive experience I've had from having that damn disease. Still, it bought a smile to my face. A selfish smile maybe, but a smile. :)

Needles I'm totally cool with. Hand me a pill larger than a few millimeters though, and there's no way in hell I'm going to be able to swallow it. I have to chew tylenol and I'm pretty sure if I were ever put in a situation where I had to take gel capsules of some sort, I'd die.

I would say zero, but since according to your poll that makes me a drug addict, I'll have to say one.

7, fuck needles!

#30 Posted by Dang3rDoom (31 posts) -

i used to be a 10 when i was younger, i took people to hold me down. but now being in the military i kinda have to just suck it up and deal with it, now im not as scared. still hurts though.

in the past weeks i got poked by 12 needles..only 3 kinda hurt.

#31 Posted by Make_Me_Mad (3108 posts) -

Used to be a ten, because of the abundance of shots and IVs I needed as a baby, but I got over it after a while. Somewhere around 3 now I guess.

#32 Posted by ModernAlkemie (367 posts) -

I'm not really worried about needles so much as I am about the person using them. One time when donating blood, the person putting the needle into my arm did a terrible job and just barely got the vein (even though my veins are very prominent on my skinny Patrick-like arms). The whole process ended up taking about three times as long as usual and she kept having to restart the blood flow by rotating the needle in my arm. It was a nightmare.

#33 Posted by Claude (16254 posts) -

I like watching needles go into my vein. Big fat zero.

#34 Posted by phampire (288 posts) -

I don't enjoy them, but I understand the need for them so I guess I'm a 0.

I get a little anxious before the initial pin prick but otherwise, I have no problem with needles.

Five. Just get it over with.

Yeah don't worry about it - I was only calling you a jerk in jest. Doesn't come across well in forums.

Like a 3. And the only reason it's that had is because my mom had a horror story of some nurse who missed her vein 7 times and ruptured 2 other veins before finally getting it. And they are super gross when used in a horror setting (had a bit of trouble with the syringe pit in Saw 2). But in terms of just getting a needle, I have no problems at all.

Text, oh how you mock and haunt me. I don't want to use emoticons, but it is so hard to figure out the actual tone of what is typed.

I don't think that not being afraid of needles makes you a junkie.

#43 Posted by Donkeycow (556 posts) -

I threw 6 down because i avoid them when i can (havn't gotten a flu shot in years, not even during the bird/swine flu scares) But if i ever need a needle i don't really think twice about it, i just man up and have it done. Not getting a tetanus shot when you sorta need one is silly though, but i guess that's why you're an 8.

#44 Posted by Winternet (8027 posts) -

Eight-ish

#45 Posted by ShadowVirus (793 posts) -

Hate them, I can't even look at them if they're in like a game or a movie or on TV without feeling light headed.

But when it comes to actually getting injections I'm totally fine, I can handle them just can't look at them. I've also had them in my mouth before, I had to have about 7 because the dentist kept missing the right spot to make my mouth numb, that was horrible.

And one time in College my teacher told us all a very detailed story about how he had a horrible pain behind his eye and had an injection into it, while he was saying I swear I was so close to passing out I just had to put my ear phones in and drown him out.

#46 Posted by MonkeyKing1969 (2913 posts) -

From age 4 to 16 I was deathly afraid of needles. But, overtime I made myself clam down about them because as an adult you can't go around crying about everything. I'm still tense when I get a shot, but I'm only about a five or a six on the fear range.

#47 Posted by Sackmanjones (4752 posts) -

I've had so many needles shoved in me that I just do not give a damn anymore

#48 Posted by Hunkulese (2797 posts) -

Since I'm not a girly man that makes me a drug addict?

#49 Posted by matthias2437 (985 posts) -

I'm not a drug addict but I'm also not afraid of needles lol.

#50 Posted by TaliciaDragonsong (8699 posts) -

I've had too many in me, both for medical reasons and others like tattoos.

But never been afraid of em, at all.
