I have an old laptop, with like 512mb RAM, and I need a new OS for it. I don't want Mac or Windows, and it has to be free. :P
Is Ubuntu good?

Any version of Linux, really. Ubuntu is probably the simplest to work with, though, and has a ton of support backing it up.

Ubuntu is great and is probably the most simple alternative to Mac or PC.

Ubuntu is awesome but if your on an old laptop and are worried about an O/S being too demanding (at least when it comes to playing games or doing other things at the same time as running the O/S) then probably look into something like Xubuntu (http://www.xubuntu.org/) and Fluxbuntu (http://fluxbuntu.org/) which are essentialy Ubuntu but with lower system requirments but essentially the same possibilities.

If I start detailing why then it might get confusing (you can research it if you want, keywords being GNOME, KDE and Xfce all of which are desktop enviroments) but essentially Ubuntu works great and has low system requirments. Xubuntu has lower system requirments than Ubuntu and Fluxbuntu has even lower.

Why would he even consider Win98? XP works fine on a 512mb system, especially the light versions made for mini-laptops.
