Please Don't Make Me Do Twitter

I don’t hate Twitter. I think it is a great application that allows people to interact with celebrities and companies, and I love hearing what Neil Patrick Harris and Sarah Silverman have to say on a daily basis. What I hate is that it has become a necessity. Everyone expects you to follow them and everyone expects you to post daily. I have enough trouble pretending that I care about what you got at starbucks and how you want to get a haircut but don’t think you should when I am speaking face-to-face. I definitely will not even start to care if I have to read it every minute of the day.

This makes it even harder for me to tweet personally though, which seems to be expected from others nowadays. I know how it feels to not give a shit about anything anyone posts and just be completely tired of it all, and I feel it would be the most hypocritical thing to do the exact same thing with my unoriginal life. I am the type of person that prefers fleshing out my ideas anyway using a medium such as a blog like this. It allows me to expand on my ideas and make myself understandable to others, while learning about myself In the process. With 140 characters all you can talk about is unintelligible tiny excerpts that do not expand on anything or link to something that is more mind opening on a separate website.

I do kind of understand where people are coming from, and perhaps the majority of people want to listen to the mindless dribble of their weedhead friend every five minutes. That is fine, to each their own. Just don’t make me become a part of it, because I could care less about the miniscule sentences of nothingness continuously posted.

Ok I won't make you.

I don't think anyone is forcing you to use twitter for anything.
But I can see where you're coming from though, personally I enjoy the heck out of twitter. Funny conversations and kick ass giveaways are a plus.

And yet you expect us to put up with 1657 characters of you whining about an entirely optional web service?

#5 Posted by BraveToaster (12588 posts) - 10 months, 12 days ago

I don't normally do this, but you did say please, so you don't have to "do" Twitter.

Whining? Where do you see any crying?
And how can one cry in text form or have highpitched sounds coming out of their texts.

Are you a magician?

to snivel or complain in a peevish, self-pitying way: He is always whining about his problems.

Such hostility over a silly joke.
Having a bad day there, buddy? do you wanna maybe talk about it?

I'd fuck Twitter

#13 Posted by Bourbon_Warrior (4525 posts) - 10 months, 12 days ago

@UnhappyCanadian: I don't have my friends on my twitter feed. I have it full of Game Journos, Sports stars and comedians. Its a great thing to have during and after big events. Like World Cup, Euro 2012, Andy Murray at Wimbledon and Obama after he supported gay marriage just to see realtime feedback on these events.

#16 Posted by MariachiMacabre (5369 posts) - 10 months, 12 days ago

I was forced to use Twitter. Now I have no hands.

#17 Posted by FLStyle (3697 posts) - 10 months, 12 days ago

@UnhappyCanadian: Your views on Twitter are outdated, people use it for much more than celebrity stalking and pointless diary-style updates.

#18 Posted by Sin4profit (2605 posts) - 10 months, 12 days ago

Dunno why anyone would feel forced to use Twitter but the fact that i have to sign into certain services through Facebook is pretty obnoxious.

@ZeForgotten: So when you're a dick it's silly...but when I do it it's hostile. Cool, I'll keep that in mind.

#20 Posted by ZeForgotten (9515 posts) - 10 months, 12 days ago
@Vodun: Really, you think I'm being a dick by asking if your a magician?
The avatar of the hat just made me think of it, that's all :P
#21 Posted by mosespippy (2610 posts) - 10 months, 12 days ago

@UnhappyCanadian: Don't worry about it mate. If you don't want to use twitter then don't use twitter. It's fucking easy. I decided I didn't want to use facebook eventually. Occasionally I'd still get emails from them once in a while though. I used one of those emails to go to facebook and delete my account. Easy as that. Sometimes there will be something like the Turntable FM beta that requires a facebook account and I just go, "well fuck that. I'm don't need their product anyway." and I move on with my life. If anyone you know gives you shit for it* then tell them to stop wasting their time telling everyone online how much fun they are having and to actually go have fun.

*Which they won't. I can guarantee that after 3 years without facebook.

In his defense, you called him an idiot. All he called you was a magician. I think you were a little more dickish than him.

Who is this person that is trying to make you use twitter? And why did you send your message to strangers on a forum? More than one thing has gone wrong here.

#24 Posted by Vodun (2364 posts) - 10 months, 12 days ago

@ZeForgotten: No, I think you were trying to be a dick by alluding to me misusing the word "whine" in the classic grammar nazi way. The magician thing I put down to drugs. No hostility intended, simply dicking around =P

Why is this thread so stupid? Im going to go and use Twitter instead.

#27 Posted by ZeForgotten (9515 posts) - 10 months, 12 days ago
@Vodun: If drugs made me see magicians everywhere then I would start taking drugs right now, that's for sure :P
#28 Posted by Vodun (2364 posts) - 10 months, 12 days ago

@ZeForgotten: I supposed doing tricks then, because just regular people walking around who happen to be magicians have to be the worst high ever.

#29 Posted by ZeForgotten (9515 posts) - 10 months, 12 days ago
@Vodun: True, they would have to be doing tricks. Otherwise they would just be people dressed up in fancy clothes walking around with a rabbit in their hats for no reason at all :P
Glad we got this all sorted out, it's time to finish up the last of my work and head to bed!
Stay safe!

if you don't like twitter then simply forget about it. i don't have a twitter nor do i want one, i have a Facebook but for every 1 friend who posted something worth talking about i had 10 friends posting something like this "somebody txt me plz :(" or a complaint about they're boyfriend/girlfriend. so needless to say i don't use twitter/facebook.

WE CAN START A revolution.

#33 Edited by believer258 (7877 posts) - 10 months, 12 days ago

I don't even have a Twitter, and since when the hell was Twitter necessary? Hell, I didn't even make a Facebook until halfway through 2010 and I barely keep up with that.

#34 Posted by Demoskinos (9027 posts) - 10 months, 12 days ago

I like me some twitter. Honestly, I'd go crazy without it. And being able to update on a mobile device means you can always be connected. Hell you can even do twitter on a dumb phone through txt messages if you want.

#35 Posted by UnhappyCanadian (23 posts) - 10 months, 12 days ago

My bad guys, saying they "force me to use twitter" was a hyperbole. I was referring to the fact that it has become a phenomenon that is impossible to avoid, like wearing vans, using facebook and masturbating on chatroulette. Obviously I have a choice, the problem is that all my friends, including at college and online, use it religiously. It has become so prominent that if I don't get involved I'll be left in the dust like clowns or the amish

#36 Posted by UnhappyCanadian (23 posts) - 10 months, 12 days ago

@mosespippy: As a college student, my entire social life pretty much revolves around these applications. I definitely respect you for being able to just walk away from them, but for me it pretty much mean throwing out social contact

#37 Posted by Jimbo (8901 posts) - 10 months, 12 days ago

Could you maybe summarise your point in a hashtag for me?

#38 Posted by Grimhild (714 posts) - 10 months, 12 days ago

@UnhappyCanadian:

With you, but I've never been the biggest fan of social media to begin with. I've been pining for Planetside 2 for awhile, and then they said that they'd possibly give you beta access for hitting them up with a funny comment on Twitter. It was extremely disappointing. I'm "tweeting" a witty remark, and that somehow quantifies my usefulness as a beta tester? Nah, I'll just wait if my SOE account history with the original PS doesn't get me in.

#39 Posted by stryker1121 (941 posts) - 10 months, 12 days ago

@UnhappyCanadian: Nobody's expecting you to follow them or post daily. You can lurk on Twitter all you want and not post anything. I don't see the problem. Mind there's some stupid shit posted on there, but the new format putting the popular hastags on the left of the screen makes the stupidity ignorable for my right-brained behind. Here's some cool follows--ChuckD, Simon Pegg, the guy who plays Hodor on GoT, Damon Lindelof and Shaq.

I think people on twitter are narcissists and i hate narcissists so therefore i don't use twitter.

This pretty much sums up twitter for me:

nar·cis·sist

[nahr-suh-sist] Show IPA

noun1.a person who is overly self-involved, and often vain and selfish.

2.Psychoanalysis . a person who suffers from narcissism, deriving erotic gratification from admiration of his or herown physical or mental attributes.

#42 Posted by UnhappyCanadian (23 posts) - 10 months, 12 days ago

@stryker1121: Thanks for the heads up man, i was already following ChuckD and Shaq, but I'm checking out the others now. I also like your suggestion on how to use it, that seems like the proper way to me. Everyone else just calls me a stalker for it.

#43 Posted by fox01313 (4740 posts) - 10 months, 12 days ago

Found twitter occasionally interesting on a few moments but I tend to ignore it for the most part. After watching the massive commercial invasion into myspace & now the same going to twitter/facebook making it all feel like someone reliving some sick dream of what they had while on AOL with all the commercial tags for that site, I can't really get too interested in any of them to a great extent.

#44 Posted by UnhappyCanadian (23 posts) - 10 months, 12 days ago

@jbuchan76: Couldn't agree more. I guess the problem for me is that it is becoming unavoidable in my life, probably because my friends are narcissists and want me to be like them

I'd say Facebook fits this bill a bit more if you abuse it. Like most everything else, Twitter is fine in small doses.

I never used Myspace, used Facebook for a couple of month ages ago, and I just recently deleted my twitter because I wasn't using it.

Not forced to use any of 'em.

#47 Posted by pornstorestiffi (4851 posts) - 10 months, 12 days ago

I kind of use Twitter as a RSS feed like thing. So i like it. But on the other hand all the Facebook shit is getting on my nerves, every body assume you are on there.

#48 Posted by Scrawnto (1960 posts) - 10 months, 12 days ago

I follow a number of people on twitter, but I have never felt any pressure to post myself, even from the two or three people I know that use their twitter accounts.

For people that exclusively do status updates of their life, yes, but if you're using twitter to make jokes or converse with other people. Then well it's really no different than these forums. So my conclusion, you are the ultimate narcissist. Posting about a narcissistic topic defining what it is to be a narcissist to make you feel better about yourself because you're not of them. :)

@UnhappyCanadian: I was a college student at the time. If you're really bothered about having a social life then one thing that could help is by being way more interesting than anyone you know. On monday when you're in class with your friends and they are talking about their shit weekend sitting around drinking Keith's and watching the Leafs game you can tell them about your weekend where you climbed a mountain and snowboarded down. As long as you have the more interesting life then the people around you will actually ask you what you are up to in person and want to hang out.
