I have been studying for a math final all day and I need help with something. If I have trying to find out what x is in a inequality when do I have to change the greater then/ less then sign?

If you multiply or divide both sides by a negative, then you must change a sign.

Say x > 1
x = 3
3 > 1

If you multiply both sides by a -1, you'd get this if you didn't change the signs:

-3 > -1

Which is obviously false. That's how you can remember you need to change the signs.

As was said, it is multiplying by a negative number.

x < 3

x = -4

multiply both by -1

4  > -3

NOT      4 < -3
