My little brother is now 16 and my family knows fuck all what to get him this holiday season. The problem is that the kid is boring, or perhaps just a tad too complacent - his interests are few and any questioning on what sort of gift he'd like are met with "meh whatever". Of the shit he does like are skateboarding (have everything i want there plz dont get me crap u dont know about :P), guitar (nothing 2 difficult im just doing it for the ladies lol XD), and first person shooters he immediately sells when hes finished them. His tastes in music are all top 40 hits he torrents and his favorite movie is Alien vs Predator. Boringboringboring.

At any rate I have been enlisted by my entire fucking family to figure out what they should all get him for Christmas. So far I've picked out a swiss army knife, Sleeping Dogs, and Far Cry 3 with only 20 or so relatives left bugging me for gift suggestions. I am going to go insane.

Bombers, please help me out. What kind of shit did you like as gifts when you were 16??? Because I am seriously running out of ideas that he'll like and will not totally blow up in my face.

(One time I just bought him fireworks and had this actually happen. Ugh.)

Edit: If my kid brother and I, as his older sister, were ever forced to acknowledge anything even vaguely sexual about the other we would most likely leap through the nearest plate glass window in a desperate bid for escape and/or the sweet embrace of death.

I don't remember what I got when I was 16 actually.
But that problem was more with me having a job and just buying what I actually wanted so I didn't really have anything to wish for when my Birthday(or Christmas) came around.
Give him a Green Mushroom(The Mario kind!) Then you can write a little card that says "If you don't want to get a life I'll just give you one" :P

Find an online gadget store and buy him a cheap rc helicopter or some shit...been doing that for years with my little brother, and though we usually break whatever I give him within an hour, it's always super fun and ridiculous!

giftcard to someplace he might use.

i never know what i would like for Christmas/birthdays since i usually buy the stuff i want or need and the few things i want and dont have are to expensive and even if they were willing to pay that much i would feel bad about it. so i end up with giftcards socks, bath towels and maybe T-shirts, since we cant wish for money and i also feel its a bit tacky

and have had this problem since i was about 15-16ish since i allready had a fulltime job besides school.

Give him a little freedom. A.k.a money.

Ya, it's boring, but useful.

I was gonna go full snark, but maybe you wouldn't take too kindly to my ill-informed remarks about your brother.

Here's my actual advice. If he's got an electric guitar and isn't already highly proficient, maybe try gifting him Rocksmith. It seems like a pretty interesting learning tool and maybe he'd stick with it for a while. I know that's what I'd want if I was just getting into learning the guitar. Generally speaking, if you can't think of anything, give him nothing.

If he can't be gracious about receiving gifts that may not be completely to his satisfaction, then give him no gifts. You could always offer to pay him for something he picked out himself.

I'm no expert here, but here's what I'd do: Ask him again what he wants for a present, but explain it along the lines of "I want to give you something, not just for you, but because if I can't get you anything, it's going to make me feel like a dick".

I had a family member who consistently said they didn't want any gifts. So one year I got them nothing and they were incredibly pissed off. But now they tell me what they want.

My suggestion: get him fuck all and learn him a lesson.

I use to tuck my little brother in at night and read him bedtime stories - the one time I accidentally found his porn we both wanted to commit seppuku on the spot. I can think of nothing more horrifying than having to admit that my bro is anything other then sexless.

Now drugs on the other hand, yeah, think I might head on down to the local meth dealers at the supermarket round the corner! Seen 'em on the bus plenty and they always seemed like good folk, sides their fucked up Lohan teeth.

When I was 16 I was reading history books so I can't be of much help. I was legitimately dull at that age and probably still am.

Get him nothing. Next year he will be more forthcoming.

(Also, what ever happened to the verb to give?)

Teach him a lesson, make up a bunch of interests for him (use your imagination, preferably stuff you are into so you get to keep the gifts). Or be a good bro and use this opportunity to get him interesting stuff he might not know about, like good books, movies and stuff.

I´d go with the first option though.

Clothes? Although that could go horribly wrong...

Some good headphones?

You're right though, he does sound pretty boring. My sister is more or less the same age and I never have too many problems coming up with gift ideas for her.

Vegetables, teenagers love vegetables. Actually, on that note, why not give him some baked goods? Food was always a winner with me, especially homemade sugary delectables.

What's the spending limit? He just started driving, I assume....a GPS perhaps? A nice watch? I like the idea of good headphones that . I love my Bose a lot. Don't waste money on Dre's, listening to them and Bose immediately next to each other. Rhe bose had better balance with the mid ranges and still had great bass, Dre's were not bad, but too focused on the bass, and it doesn't balance worth a damn. Dre's are typically $100 more than the 'equivalent' (Probably going to get some flack for what I just said).

Try to think of something he doesn't need, but is useful when you have it.

You can get him a giantbomb subscription!

A year of PS+/Xbox Live/Xbox points.

Hope some of this helps.

I think I got a TV, a stereo system, and Half Life 2 on the original Xbox when I was 16. I just played Half Life 2 (almost) all day 'cause I loved it. And yes, it was on the original Xbox. That was good memories. Or wait... Maybe I was 15 then. Tell your brother that if he doesn't think of something you're not going to get him anything.

Everyone loves food. Gift card to a restaurant he really likes is a winner. Besides that, buy him cds you enjoy that might be a little bit out of his comfort zone and try introducing him to it. Maybe he'll like it. As far as video games, try getting him something action oriented with a good story that isn't an FPS in the vein of Call of Duty etc. Far Cry 3 is a good start, if you have a ps3 pick up Uncharted or a similar game for a different system. Maybe introduce him to something like Limbo or Braid, they got my older sister back into games after not playing them since childhood.

If a 16 year old is boring when he likes skateboarding, guitars, fps's, pop music and violent movies then there are a lot of boring teenagers in the world.

As for an idea, aren't there some "cool" Aliens or Predator merchandise out there, like this ... thing: http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/c534/?srp=3

Or some "sweet" action figures: http://www.planetavp.com/features/merchandise/alientoys.shtml

If he has a pc, the game Natural Selection 2 basically nails a multiplayer version of aliens vs marines (not predators sadly).

In all seriousness, I was skeptical of how boring he actually was, but from your description he definitely sounds like a really boring and shallow person.

At 16 all I ever wanted was cash to buy myself what I wanted.

Also giftcards work. Since he is into skateboarding; check out CCS.com; maybe some clothes? New hat or something skaters wear now a days (in my day it was baggy jeans, can't understand how you could possibly kickflip in skinny jeans, it blows my mind just thinking about it)

I think Far Cry 3 seems like a good choice it's at least a lot longer than most of the FPS he's used too.

Also Alien vs Predator simultaneously destroy what was one good property and one alright property so tell your brother that some dude from the internet says "BOOOOOOOOOOO!"

Though to be fair I really liked Alien Resurrection so I guess I don't get to say shit...

Maybe an Amazon gift card or something? If he has a PC capable of gaming then I would say a Steam gift card is perfect!

Not to be that guy, but 'gift' isn't a fucking verb. I really don't understand why people use it like that.

Like people said though, money is what he'll most likely want. From what I remember of being a sullen 16-year old is you don't want anyone else deciding what you should have, and hate not being able to get the stuff you do want.
