Any fans of Progressive rock fans here? I am really into it though it can get a bit self indulging and pretentious at times. Though prog rock is not as popular as it used to be, their are still tons of great prog rock bands around. European Prog rock is doing very well, so is Progressive Metal.
Progressive rock?
"FilmGuy said:Yeah at first when Phil Collins took over it wasnt so bad, but later on he turned Genesis into a pop band and ruined what made them a good band."Otacon said:Both, and when I say both I mean Phil Collins "And then there were three..." etc. not the later poppy stuff.""I'm a Genesis fan."Peter Gabriel Genesis or Phil Collins Genesis?"
"FilmGuy said:I'm a fan up to Wind and Wuthering, although the last great Genesis album for me was A Trick of the Tail. A lot of people say Gabriel leaving was the turning point for Genesis, but I honestly think Hackett's departure had more of an impact."Otacon said:Both, and when I say both I mean Phil Collins "And then there were three..." etc. not the later poppy stuff.""I'm a Genesis fan."Peter Gabriel Genesis or Phil Collins Genesis?"
Man last night I mentioned Neil Pert and my Dad went "Who's Neil Pert?" I nearly smacked him, then it got worse.
I told him he was probably the best drummer in the world in a band called Rush. He then told me he hated Rush.
D: Worst part is I'm from Canada, I officially disown my father.
Supertramp is the best mix of classic prog/rock I've ever heard. They're progressive without being even slightly pretentious or self-indulgent.
Here are a couple of progressive rock bands that I listen to: Rush, Pink Floyd, Dream Theater, Yes (a little bit)
I will try some bands that you guys have mentioned here.
"RHCPfan24 said:They're very much not a prog band, but some of their songs have a prog influence. Silverfuck is the first that comes to mind."I love Yes, Pink Floyd, Smashing Pumpkins, Rush, and Jethro Tull. So, yes"I would not call Smashing punpkins prog, but thats just me I guess."
I like it! By the way, I am listening Wish You Were here, the CD not the song, right now. I was listening Meddle a few hours ago.
I am a huge prog fan. I nearly live for prog.
Favorite band:
Genesis
(from the 70's to the 90's. Yes, I might be the only fan of both phases.).
I also love:
- Mike Oldfield (more like New Age, but similar to prog)
- Rush
- The Alan Parsons Project
I also like:
- Dream Theater
- Pink Floyd
- Emerson, Lake and Palmer
- Jethro Tull
- Yes
I happen to think Pink Floyd is one of the greatest rock bands ever, and they're considered proggy (which I shall agree with), so there ya go. I've heard Mastodon was considered prog metal, which I'm starting to come to terms with (their albums are pretty conceptual), and I like Mastodon a lot, so that's another score. I like a whole mess of Progressive stuff. I'm not too crazy about it when some of the stuff gets a bit too pretentious, but I've learned to respect and give love to that sort of arty rock (a lot of them are awfully talented musicians, after all).
