"GOP, RNC to rebrand Democrats as 'Socialists'" (May 13, 2009)

First paragraph:

"A member of the Republican National Committee told me Tuesday that when the RNC meets in an extraordinary special session next week, it will approve a resolution rebranding Democrats as the “Democrat Socialist Party.”

Okay, why are they doing such a childish and futile thing at this time? You can't just rename another established organization (maybe you could pass a law, I suppose - will the Dem controlled Senate and Obama go for it?). Won't that make Congressional proceedings more complicated? Are the Dems really that Socialist? Don'y you have to be an adult to run for Congress?

Aren't there better things they could be doing? You know the economy and stuff (I want them to have real issue ideas to counter Obama's - that's what democracies do). This resolution should be thought of on a very slow news day, if at all. We're paying idiots hundreds of thousands of dollars to come up with this. Will the Dems counter by resolving to call them doody-heads?

At least Steele is against it (please +1 him if you get the chance), there's others too I can't remember. If you're at all involved with the Republican party, please do what you can to halt this. Tell everyone what a stupidity this is on so many levels.

Republicans that don't like Democrats? Well I never!
They're just bitter they lost an electon, and now are trying to demonise them by changing the name to something more resembling the Nazi's.
It is pretty fucking stupid though.

Just, wow. Prehaps the GOP, RNC should consider rebranding themselves as FUD if this is what they think the nation needs at this time. Focus on the issues!

The RNC is in such a wilderness they don't even have maps anymore. When you have large swaths of your party's primary organization saying "who cares" what your chairman is saying on your behalf, your desperately searching for an identity and finding nothing but an identity of being the party in opposition. Which can be an important role, to keep those who are in power in check, but when you're spending time to literally call names at the other side...you're just not doing the job of politic. Or maybe you are. I don't even know.

To be clear, I'm not a rabid Republican-hating Democrat; I don't associate with any political party because I believe no "ism" can fully respond to an individual's specific political viewpoint. Hell, there are so many levels of conservatism within the Republican and Democratics parties that the whole effort seems kinda useless. Yay for two-party systems.

But yeah, in this time to be making resolutions to call the other side socialist when they're the popular party is a waste of time, money and effort.

Don't care, this is not news.

When will the republican party split so the Modern Whig Party can make a comeback?

So then shouldn't Democrats rename the republican party the "Republican Fascist Party"?

But really, instead of doing shit like this maybe they should come up with real alternative budgets and healthcare plans

I'm calling shenanigans on this.  No way they could be THAT dumb.

First, this is just fancy politics talk for calling somebody a poopy head as Keyser pointed out so well.

Second, Democrats aren't Socialist!  Please!  Sure, they are closer to socialists than Republicans, but they still have a ways to go before you can call them that.

If this is actually true... Expect Republicans to get dominated again next year.

Unless Democrats recognize it, it's diddly squat.

What's the US president again? Republicans really want to call their president a socialist? Ridiculous.

It's a tactic... It'll probably fail. Personally, I quit caring about the republicans and the democrats before the last election.

Remember, this is the same party that has a representative in congress who implied that there were members of Congress who were against "American interests" and didn't call for a vote of no confidence. Ridiculous or not, they're already calling the President a socialist.

I think he's making the point that the Nazi's full party name was National Socialist Party. I think its a bit of a stretch, but there is a tie between the word Socialist and Nazism.

This'll only make the Republican party look worse. Did anyone see the recent episode of the Colbert Report where he interviewed John McCain's daughter? She's far more intelligent than half the dicks in that party.

I have no vote in the US, and I'm not saying it isn't an accurate description, but this seems ridiculously desperate.  It's like O'Reilly (who I actually find pretty entertaining!) calling everybody 'Extreme Far Left Radicals' when what he means is 'slightly left of centre'.  It just makes Reps look stupid and hysterical.

Just wait a couple years and the novelty of Obama will soon start to fade.  It's already becoming apparent that 'doing' is somewhat harder than 'talking', and public opinion will eventually settle more evenly again.  But then, I think History will eventually look on Bush reasonably kindly - so call me crazy if you like.

@TheKidNixon: Actually, NSDAP stands for the National Socialist German Worker's party [well, translated to English]. But no, they weren't, the National Socialism part was used to draw votes from the lower classes, and in fact was just a pseudonym used to cover their racial policies, seperating the German's from non-Germans.

...wait...

I agree with Stephen Colbert. If the Republicans want to re-brand the Democrats, in a manner that conjurers up images of failed policies, then they should call them Republicans.

Why would you campaign for them to stop? It will only make them look even worse in the long run, and they certainly don't need that with the impending mid-term elections next year and a new judge forthcoming (with more on the way, maybe). This is a boon for true conservatives and libertarians too- I don't think any of them hold any more love for the Republican party than your average Democrat or liberally-minded individual.

The whole point is to make Democrats look bad, and therefore make Republicans look good. They're basically trying to make them look bad, by saying they're bad. It's pretty rediculous, but they're actually trying it.

Erm... no. Socialists have absolutely nothing to do with Nazis. The United States has always been to some degree socialist, for example: socialised education, partially socialised healthcare, and so on.

Republicans are the best at calling people names and labeling them, no one does it better! I thought Republicans were supposed to be about less government and less spending? What about the Patriot Act that George W. Bush passed through? Big government! What about doubling the total national debt in only 8 years...is that being conservative? Maybe it's the Republicans that are really the "socialists" here. Instead of countering Democrats bills with versions of their own, instead of coming up with ideas on how to improve things the Republican party continues to walk down the same road it's been on for the past 8 years....and they expect to win again?

Anyone who goes on Sunday talk shows and proudly encourages the radical voices of the Republican party with a positive endorsement probably doesn't have time to be for or against anything like a rebranding while he mulls his own party's legacy.

Amazing, in this country, the word socialism is used so often and the people using it don't know what it means or what circumstances we'd have to be under for it to work.

The government bailed out corporations long before this administration was put into office. If you want government to stay out of it altogether, you better not sink in hypocrisy.

Grrrr.....

The play with words, definitions, and general semantics the last few years has been amazing.

There are certain buzzwords used by political parties to scare people, make people mad, make people supportive, etc..

Government spending has been changed to "investment", tax money supposedly is "owned" by the taxpayers (i wonder if I can get it back on demand), torture has been renamed "enhanced interrogation", and now maybe we'll have the renaming of politcial parties.

I know that when Obama does anything my parents don't like, they say that he's a socialist. That's a word that scares people. They think we will evolve into a soviet system. Just like when McCain said Obama will "redistribute our wealth". He would repeat that over and over to scare the living shit out of people.

The Republicans must have forgotten that many of them voted for our bailouts....that was perhaps one of the biggest steps towards socialism we have ever seen. The Republicans have socialist values as well, they just hide it better and lean more towards fascism and imperialism.

Are the Republicans democratic? I mean, they are proponents of democracy i.e. popular government / power to majority of citizens.

If so then it makes sense that the "Democratic Party" be renamed.

This really seems  productive. Right.

That being said, the republicans don't even have a directive themselves. They are so confused in which way their party is going that who knows what they're thinking.
