My friends and I do semi-regular role playing and we are going to be starting a futuristic / sci-fi campaign in the next few weeks and I thought it would be cool to put together some playlists of decent music to go with it, so far I have the following:

From Games

  • Deus Ex Human Revolution
  • Starcraft 2 Wings of Liberty
  • Borderlands
  • Mass Effect
  • Syndicate
  • Halo

From TV

  • Battlestar Galactica
  • Serenity / Firefly

From Films

  • Blade Runner
  • Prometheus
  • Sunshine

Does anyone have any ideas of other music that might be worth adding to this list?

It counts as sci-fi. One of the characters is part robot and everything!

If that works, then I see your Final Fantasy and raise you some Chrono Trigger:

It's got robots AND time travel AND a giant space monster.

Too Human has a very under appreciated soundtrack.

And I'll raise you some Full Metal Alchemist, where the main character has not one but two metal limbs and alchemy is considered a science! (I'm fresh out of JRPG's, I don't play them much.)

Starhawk.  Along the same lines as Firefly.

I remember the chase scene music and the opera scene from The Fifth Element being pretty damn epic.

Bruce Willis falls in love with a magical possibly alien girl who knows martial arts in the future and everything!

How the hell did I forget about Tron! That would be perfect!

Will check that one out too, thanks for the tip!

Its being a lonnnnnnngggg time since I've seen that movie but I do remember some of the music being amazing, I think finding the soundtrack might be a bit tricky though :S

All right! I'll play the alchemy card again - Baccano's story begins with an alchemical experiment and one of its antagonists spends centuries perfecting an immortality elixir. Alchemy was once considered a science here in the real world, and this is fiction, so it checks out!

I liked Firefly's opening theme much better the first time I heard it, when it was called Walker, Texas Ranger.

Neotokyo is a Half-Life 2 mod with a really neat sort of futuristic soundtrack, EVE online has some basic ambient tunes that have grown on me over the years (it really is just background music, though). Mirror's Edge has some good stuff as well, if I recall properly - great tunes but I didn't enjoy the actual game very much.

For futuristic military stuff, get the soundtrack from the movie Starship Troopers. The first one. It nails the bombastic, super-patriotic future nation-state vibe pretty well. Plus, I just can't imagine going bug hunting to any other theme than Klendathu Drop:

FTL has some great space-y sounding music.

Metroid Prime has some good ones that are ambient enough that they won't be distracting from. Though it depends on how positive your opinions are of "synth choirs". Examples:

I swear there are some better ones than these from that trilogy, but I can't recall what area they would be associated with.

I was gonna say Firefly. How did you know!?

if you're looking for something a little less soundtrack-y, a bit more rockish, but still very cyberpunk (to my mind), i suggest maserati and their album 'passages' or 'inventions for the new season.' both are awesome. here's a sample-

and if you're looking for ambient stuff- the endless space soundtrack is pretty fantastic.

just had another thought- the portal 2 soundtrack had some pretty fantastic stuff for industrial/electronica that could work for sci-fi.

edit: last one- i always thought portishead sounded like they came from a dark, dystopian future. so their stuff could work,

Toonami's Deep Space Bass has been my go-to for a vaguely sci-fi soundtrack kind of chill electronic music thing. That and the Tron: Legacy Soundtrack but I'm sure you've already listened that to death (AND IF YOU HAVENT GET TO IT)

Also, yeah as other people mentioned, the title screen music for FTL is not bad.
