What books did you guys used to read when you were very young, or possibly have read to you?

My all-time favorite book that I used to read all of the time is called "Chicken Soup with Rice". It's a great little book that teaches months in the jolliest of ways. Written by Maurice Sendak, the same guy that wrote "Where the Wild Things Are". That's another favorite, but it doesn't compare to Chicken Soup with Rice!

Read it once. Read it twice. Go read chicken soup with rice!

Some runner ups include The Rainbow Fish and The Lorax. Such great children's books.

Holy crap, I found a Japanese Lorax.

Which books hold the best memories for you guys?

Fly Away Home.

It's about a homeless boy and his father living in an airport. It is seriously my favorite children's book.

There's a lot more I can't remember, but those two immediately pop to my head.

There was a book about a girl who had a cardboard box and imagined it was all kinds of different things, but I can't remember the name of it.  I'm pretty sure it was "[girls name] and the Cardboard Box," but I haven't had much luck with google, amazon, or barnes & noble searches.  Then there's these two:

And my absolute favorite book is Ferdinand, a story about a bull that just wanted to chill in a field.

EDIT:  I remembered her name!

I loved The Butter Battle Book, and pretty much everything by Shel Silverstein.

On a side note, a series of books that I wouldn't call for children, per se, but defined a lot of my reading as a child were the complete works of Narnia, as I had read all of them by the time I was in first grade.

Totally. Though I often got em mixed up pretty often. Only way to distinguish Dandy from Beano was one having an overly masculine porn star on the front, while the other had Dennis the Menace.

@Abyssfull: Korky the Cat was actually the cover character for most of my time, with Dan just being a story character inside, but I know what you mean. They were extremely similar looking comics.

Yeah, it's amazing. When I read it as a child it was just a fun awesome story... when you read it as an adult all these complexities emerge, it's like two books in one.

@JJWeatherman:  Chicken Soup with Rice and the accompanying stories are probably the most important children's books from my youth.  When I was very young I experienced an unfortunate loss.  While I was dealing with the incident, I listened to the Really Rosie / Chicken Soup with Rice album and read (and re-read) the books.  It got through a tough time.

After that, I'd say The Paddington Bear books by Michael Bond and Walter Farley's Black Stallion books were my favorites.  I really loved reading series books as a kid and there were more than a dozen Paddington books and even more Black Stallion novels.  Oddly, I was never into the Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew because mysteries weren't my thing until high school.  By then I switched to Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler and Ross MacDonald.
