Not to sound insensitive, but I wouldn't be surprised if this affects the number of people who go see this movie for a few days. I know if I were still a kid, my mom would be worried if I went, and I'm sure she's not the exception. Despite that, however, I think even Christopher Nolan would admit that right now, box office revenue isn't of primary concern right now.

@ShadowConqueror: I bet, very similar to what happened with air travel after 9/11

other then that, word cannot describe the suffering that these people have happened to them. This tragedy will stay with them for a long long time, I'm glad the death count has been lowered to 12, I hope it doesn't get any higher

Always blame Bane....er.....Bain Capital!

Seriously though, this shooting sounds pretty terrible. Shootings in general are terrible, but to have a community that was so close to the Littleton, Colorado school shootings to be struck with such violence again is terrible. My heart goes out to them.

14, (maybe more) people dead, what a great time to crack jokes...

I'll echo what a lot of people here have already said that Americas gun laws are a problem. You could blame this on a million things, religion, video games, political, you can give any motivation you want, but the ease of obtaining weapons was what allowed this to happen. Crazy people exist, arming them is only enabling them. The U.S. has a lot of backwards laws that made sense when the country was formed, but don't today.

Not so sure about that. A year ago, some fucking douchebag whose name doesn't derseve mention killed 77 people with a bomb and a couple of firearms in Norway, and Norway has one of the most stringent gun laws in the world. You can't guard yourself completely against these pitiless monsters out there. You can only take away their chance to do it again.

Reports initially quoted 15, but 12 is the current number being reported by officials.

Thank you, humanity, for once again showing us all how fucking atrocious you can really be.

Everything will be blamed except this country's terribly lax gun laws, our woefully inadequate focus on helping those who need psychiatric help because that's socialism, or how we treat certain minorities (assuming there was an Iranian/muslim angle to this). Everything but what should be blamed.

I'm not one that thinks that blame shouldn't be assigned after a tragedy, or that we should never use a tragedy to discuss the serious underlying issues. We should and we should. There's no better time to (rationally) do so. But as others have said, let's not be stupid here. People have died and that's pretty fucking awful, to say the very least.

The only blame here should be "The Right to Bear Arms".

Not the guy who looked at a 3-month old baby and decided it was a good idea to go ahead and shoot it at point blank range?  He deserves none of the blame, huh?  The guns made him do it! OK man.

But still, there's something that gets under my skin more than the shooting itself.  Probably because it's something I have to deal with nearly every single time I go see a movie.

STOP BRINGING YOUR DAMN BABIES INTO THE THEATER WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU.
I was about to say, who brought a 3 month year old baby to a midnight screening? I don't care how much you like Batman, you can wait until the next day, when you have a sitter or daycare.

Then again, I feel pretty bad kicking a parent who just lost a child. So I submit.

What a shame that owning a gun is legal in the US. There's no possible way this law-abiding model of humanity could have otherwise obtained a weapon.

Usually they're not. You have to have a special permit to legally own a fully automatic weapon in the US. I'm willing to bet the one the gunman had was illegally obtained.

@ShadowConqueror: that's the official number along with 38 hurt which thankfully is a downgrade from the prior number of 50 wounded.

Another good thing (if you can call it that) is that a 3 month old that was supposedly wounded turned out to be not and only in the hospital so the docs could check it out

@Canteu: If you are doing that, let's just factor in the past 200 years of every country. So, Fuck. Every. Country. Sorry, but that was a super dumb statement.

It comes down to a person with a serious mental illness who shouldn't have owned ammunition let alone a gun. I do agree more strict gun laws need to be put in place to prevent further incidents from happening but there wont be. Instead, they will more than likely just blame any kind of media/religious/ethnic type thing they can grasp at.

Yeah, it's sad. It's in the Bill of Rights, so we perceive it as untouchable. Furthermore, the gun lobby has grown to be one of the biggest in the US. I love hearing the sad arguments defending it, that it's a constitutional right. It wouldn't be the first time we've changed the constitution! I think the most similar case to this would be prohibition, which was both created and killed by the constitution.

This is a real shame. Violence like this deeply saddens me.

Before we jump to conclusions about what he was or what motivated him let's just wait and see. He gave up without a fight and they have him in custody. My prayers go with the families of those lost.

I'm sure this will tighten up security at all late-night/mid-night release shows regardless of the film. I'm surprised they didn't expect to have mass amounts of people and have ample security. Mid-night movie shows should be liken unto Black Friday sales.

The second saddest part about all of this (the first is obviously the senseless loss of life caused by this jackass) is that countless tax dollars will go into trying this guy and then supporting him in prison for the duration of his life. Colorado has the death penalty on the books but, even if they decide to use it, it still often takes several years between sentencing and execution.

The news said they did have security, they just weren't prepared for / expecting someone to walk in with a gun.

We will never live in a world of peace, love and brotherhood. Although this is tragic it doesn't come to a surprise because this kind of shit happens every day all over the world. It may not be a movie theater it happens in but we live in a corrupt and evil world. Far FAR worse things happen all over this world, this surprises you? no offense but are you sheltered from the outside? do you not read any kind of news outside your state? your country? We live in a FUCKED up world.

Incredibly tragic and my heart goes out to the families, hopefully the medias assumptions on terrorist cell is completely wrong which against wouldn't surprise me since major media outlets don't have the greatest track record of posting the full truth and/or being right half the time. If i was a betting man i would bet it was just a sick individual and when i say i mean he wasn't right in the head. RIP to all those who died and i hope for a quick recovery for the injured.

@Foxtrot0245 You can make a bomb out of house hold items that just about everyone owns. What's to say he doesn't walk into the theater with a homemade bomb if he didn't have access to guns? Crazy people are going to kill regardless of what the tool being used. Blaming guns is just as much scapegoating as is blaming video games or rap music.

Normal responsible gun owners don't go around killing people. Should cars be outlawed as well? There are enough assholes who misuse that privlage too and decide to drink and drive. If properly used guns can be used for hunting, recreational shooting or as a last resort for self defense.

@stryker1121: Nope that's the agenda now, blame everything except the lunatic who decided to shoot up a movie theater. It was the gun laws, the victims, and violent video games at fault. Honestly we should ban all firearms and anything over E-10 rated games to make sure no one gets violent thoughts or can even think about owning a hand gun for protection, because we all know the only way to get a gun is through legal channels.

The entire incident is sad, but children being killed bothers the shit out of me. And they found an explosive device too. Gun control does need to be stricter here in the U.S., but people (especially nutjobs) will always find new ways to get guns.

Yeah, the thing is, though, is that it's not even that you have to totally restrict them. In this case, it seems the perpetrator was obviously deranged, but this isn't the first time a nut has been able to get a gun. I remember something similar with Virginia Tech and a cursory Google search led me to this: http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/editorials/story/2012-01-05/mentally-ill-access-to-guns/52397838/1

It's unsettling to think that current gun control laws can't even cut it for a variety of reasons (whether underfunded, underregulated, or non-existant), and that even bringing that to the table, seems to upset people.

Either way, this is an unfortunate tragedy.

The only blame here should be "The Right to Bear Arms". Quite possibly the stupidest thing about America. America is one of the few first world countries where owning a gun and having experience with a gun is relatively common. I'm 25 years old and have never even seen a real, in use gun in my entire life. Let alone touched one. I'm from the UK. The only gun crime we have regularly is caused by Teenagers think they live in American suburbs in Gangs. They think Gangs are cool. Because American television and Hollywood is 50/50 on it. They show the bad side sure but they also exploit it as something cool. America is politically still fucked up and for everything amazing they do, politically they have sooo much to learn. They even have a man on national News who epitomizes Americas dumbfuck politics on a Daily basis in Bill O'Rielly. Shame that 0.01% of the nation have to give the rest such a bad rep. But they do and until things change they will continue to do so.

The right to bear arms made complete sense when it was first established but is completely ridiculous in today's modern world.

Very sad about this news. hopefully we know the why soon enough and people dont come t come consulsions about video games or comic books but more importantly certain countries or people.

It's sad how quickly everyone turns hypocritical and points their fingers at something to blame. Those same people who may think it's ridiculous to blame video games or rap music, will just as quickly point their fingers and blame guns or just simply America. The shootings may not happen as often as they do in America, but it's a big place here and there are a lot of people to account for. Looks like even places with strong gun control laws can't escape shooting rampages. Like some one posted earlier. We need better mental health facilities and ways to detect and help people with these kinds of problems. We should be doing that instead of trying to ban guns, games, and blame a certain political party.

Thing is, none of the things you mention are actually made with the sole intention to kill. I think that's kind of the issue some folks take with them there "tools". Someone killing someone with a car; it's a divergence from the intended purpose. Someone kills someone with a gun...

What are we talking about here? Is it "Let's invade Iranistan and kill all of them"? Or is it "Strip all US citizens of their guns and question anyone who dislikes the govt"? How are they framing this particular incident?

I'm getting annoyed at how The Dark Night has been roped into this whole thing, as though the movie itself is somehow relevant context for what is clearly an unrelated act of fucking lunacy. Similarly, it's a shame that the release of the film will be forever marred by a tragedy that is, in all likelihood, completely unrelated.

Pretty inconsequential, though, when you consider the deaths of all those people :(
