Should girls be allowed to go topless? (Question of the Day 11-18-10)

My opinion is the same as it's always been. Double standard, so yes they should.

I think life should be clothing optional.

Hell to the yes.

I would say no because I don't think Men should not be allowed to go topless, but for the sake of Sexual Equality I would say yes.

It's legal in Canada. In public area's anyway; like beaches, the street, etc. As soon as you go into a store or anything privately owned you can get into trouble though.

I say yes on as a principle, but the types of women who go topless would be the same as the type of men: hairy chested and overweight.

Vermont has no laws against public nudity, but some towns have passed their own ordinances. Not many of them, though.
 
Granted, there's only one or two months out of the year where you'd want to go topless in Vermont, male or female.

If this were to happen, within a few decades noone would ever care (as seen in every other society that changed this particular item of their culture).  It is clothing that makes boobies special in the first place.

On public beaches and places like that, women are allowed to go topless where I live. Walking into a store, however, is a different story. But then again, men generally aren't welcome in stores (and other such places) without a shirt either.  
 
So basically, if the topic is asking, "should women be allowed to go topless anywhere?" Then my answer would be no, and neither should men.

If they always wore no tops wouldn't you guys get tired of seeing them as the norm? Then wouldn't clothes become sexual?

There are some truly awful tits out there.

I'm torn.  Part of me doesn't mind at all.  Like, for example, the coffee shops where the baristas where nothing but bikinis or pasties or lingerie.  I see nothing with those.  And would see nothing if they went topless if it were legal.  Yet at the same time, I agree with those who say that the women who would do it probably shouldn't.  It's bad enough when women pretend their muffintops don't exist and try to wear stuff they have no business wearing, but topless?  Also have to agree with the bra/sagging issue.

Chose yes as a knee jerk reaction, but now I think about it I'm actually against it. It sounds like a brilliant idea, but isn't there enough blatant sexuality in advertising and media without women walking around uncovered? I understand the sexual double standard, but really I don't think it's at all civilised or acceptable for men to walk around topless. It's fine at beaches and party events like that, but just walking down the street it's kinda uncool. Builders will go shirtless on hot days, but I'm not sure a woman doing that job would necessarily want to follow suit. I suppose there are two ways to look at this; it's the question of what should be permitted or not by law, and what should be seen as acceptable or not by society. I'm not in favour of laws restricting people's personal choices, but society is damaged and hyper sexualised enough without adding to it.
 
Also, on a purely subjective level, I think women wearing bras is sexier than them not. Life is better with a little mystery. And of course as many others pointed out, the first thought that comes to mind is the attractive toned young woman, but the truth is much more jarring. Ever seen footage of people at nudist colonies? It's not pleasant. And those are the kind of people most likely to choose to go around topless.
