Unlike other gaming forums that I've come across swearing is allowed and tolerated. Is this right considering there are quite a few minors on this site.
There's worse places they could be. If they can't handle cussing then what are they doing watching adult rated shows and M-rated games? I don't think many are coming here to read up on E-rated games only... Besides, if someone wants to cuss, they'll cuss, it would just be more work for the mods to delete every post with a cuss word on it.
There are alot of forums that allow cursing, Gs is the only place i have posted at the cared so much. There are alot worse things on the internet than reading curse words.

As long as it doesn't get out of hand. Sometimes free speech can lead to a bunch of jerks getting on and throwing racial slurs all over the place and that has already happen, but I think most of us are mature enough to handle a bit of hard language.

Should? Eh, maybe, maybe not.
Will? Yes, it will, for now. Jeff thinks he can create a community of mature adults on (chuckle) the Internet, indeed, on (giggle) the gaming section (guffaw) of the Internet no less.
There are tradeoffs either way. You get more trolls and assholes* with an open forum, but you get less free and easy expression when you start making a list of words that can't be used. I think Jeff will eventually cave once the, ah, more mainstream users discover this site, but for now there are no express profanity rules.
It's important to note, though, that the Internet is not a place for children. Rule of thumb: if your kid isn't old enough that you let him/her watch rated R movies, she or he shouldn't be allowed on the internet except specific sites. Yes, most game sites censor and moderate, but that's a decision to preserve civility as much as protecting minors. Even with a potential filter, Jeff clearly wants this to be a site that recognizes the media gamer age is well over 18.
Imo they shouldnt even be called swears. They aren't "bad" words, they should be accepted like any other word on the planet is. There's nothing wrong with saying fuck, how is that bad? It really sounds retarded if you just sit and think about it. When i'm older and if I have kids i'll let them swear as much as they want, cause there is nothing wrong with swearing. "Swear words" are great words. They can be used to express anger, offend someone you hate, and a variety of other things.
Just another one of the things that pisses me off about society. "Swears" are not bad in any way.

Let this topic also be a window into the thought patterns of western culture. We usually don't have a desire to indulge or partake in certain activities until someone declares that an act is forbidden. Look at 80% of the forums here on off-topic. Many of them don't have cursing but as soon as one person starts or does the opposite like the TC did here implying that there was something wrong with it and everyone starts doing it. It's the same reason why you have catholic school girl or preachers daughter porn stars.

Yes, but if some people want to ruin the priverlage then they should be moded. I think if someone says "Fuck I hate Turock" then i think it is acceptable but when people say something along the lines of "your a fucking idiot you duche bag, as if any one would buy a fucking wii, they are for faggots" then you should ban their ass!
As if minors dont know these words already. If not in school then their parents or relatives they've heard it already and if they havent they will one day. And those words will be said a lot more frequently in other places, such as school, then on here. It's ok to have swearing allowed but i mean keep it reasonable and dont go off on a swear fest this site is ours too and i dont think we want to be seen as foul mouthed idiots.
We intend to cover M-rated games on this site in a frank and uncensored manner. It seemed sort of backwards to do that and then go and try to have a squeaky clean community, especially when that just leads to people attempting to game whatever filters you've put into place to get their swearing across anyways. I feel like we've placed a lot of our trust in people with this site and its rules, and so far, it's been going pretty well. But I'm not so naive that I don't realize that as this site grows, people will feel a bit more anonymous, and we'll probably have to rethink many of our rules and processes as that happens.
We've currently decided to draw our line at pornographic content. If the community can't handle cursing in a manner that at least occasionally resembles maturity, we'll move our line. I'd rather not have to do that, though. Because then you wouldn't be able to properly discuss the interview we shot today with Mike Wilson of GameCock when it goes up in the near future.

there is quite a few swear words in the games that people play as well. I think that swearing is fine within reason. It can be particularly useful in emphasising a point, or in making an average joke a hilarious one
