So I went to the Comic Vine forums...
This topic is locked from further discussion.
As with all of the Whiskey Media Family, I have some level of interest with the subjects regarding the correlating site. Yet, out of curiousity brought to me through reading an article placed on the footer over here I ended up in the Comin Vine forums, and wow.. they're pretty awful. Maybe it's my perspective of forums due to not exploring them much outside of Giant Bomb. Although, the popularity of Comic Vine may also contribute to what I consider a pretty awful message board. While their are the obvious, "Hey, these users are alright." duders floating about I found most of the threads pretty intolerable.
But hey, tell me your opinion about them and feel free to throw some gems of text if you find any in here, this is by no means a hate thread just something I'm curious about in a broader view, and feel free to add what you think may be the worse forum in existance if you have the unfortunate title of discovering it.
The first couple of posts for (good) articles I have found that people are generally nice and share a good bit of useful information or personal perspectives I don't always agree with but appreciate their existence. I rarely ever go into the forums at any site, even Giantbomb, past the front-page because it is just a breeding ground of internet trolls. You will find that everywhere, and I cannot agree that Comic Vine comes any where close to ranking with some sites I have been to.
Hey, guys! I heard that Anime Vice sucks, too! And all the weirdos congregate at Tested! Screened? Full of pansies. Giantbomb? The last bastion of sanity on the Internet.

it seems (somewhat ironically), most of them can't do grammar or spelling.
That's what confuses the hell out of me. I lurk on all the Whiskey sites, and somehow the comments on the site dedicated to READING are the most consistently illiterate.
From the age of seven to eighteen I passionately read comics, and was always years ahead of the school curriculum in terms of vocabulary. Yet Comic Vine users seem the worst-equipped to put coherent thoughts together. The average CV user must be 12, or an incredibly lazy man-child, to write so poorly.
I've actually taken up posting there recently, since DC's relaunch pulled me in. If a CV user sees this, well... COME AT ME, NERDS!
I read this thread a while ago and decided that the CV crowd wasn't my crowd.

While I don't know what may be the worst forum, I will say that the GB forum quality as a whole has been on a rapid decline. This thread certainly doesn't help much.
What's going on? I thought Anime Vice was the only Whiskey site everyone on GB despised. I'm a little hurt now.
I run a comic book store and I find Comic Vine to be uninteresting and whole bunch of other negative words.
What I would like to know is how the top users there range from 40,000 forum posts to 140,000 forum posts.
How in the fuck do they do that? Are they wizards?
See, my problem with CV is that they write all their articles in-fiction. They write as if Spider-man and Batman were real people. Also, they have zero interest in anything other than superhero comic-books from the main two.
That's going to draw a very specific crowd. Not they kind I'd hang out with. GB at least has a degree of appreciation for the larger art form of gaming and the industry behind it.
So I went to the Giant Bomb forums and those guys are fucked up. They are weirdly obsessive about the staff, most of what they find funny makes no sense, and they have threads with hundreds of pages of people putting Vinnys head on mostly naked men.

And on October 11, 2011, the seeds of the Whiskey Media Site Civil War were planted...
We're laying the groundwork for our huge summer crossover event. End result; Whiskey Media will be split into an indefinite number of alternate universes and Power Girl will get her own book again.
I want to die and come back from the dead in two years, except i was actually just trapped in the past.
They seem the same. I went over there to see if I can garner any interest in comics (I didn't) and the off-topic forums were just that and the gen. diss. was just that. What's so werid about it?

I was the same way with reading stuff when I was real young, it just baffles me that people are either too ignorant or too lazy to proofread what they just typed before they hit "Post Reply."
*crosses fingers that he didn't miss anything while proofreading*
I grew up casually reading comic books, and I really enjoy Comic Vine. It can be somewhat difficult for me to engage in conversation on the subject of comic books as my knowledge is incredibly limited. I'm often amazed by how much comic book knowledge many comic book fans seem to hold (have they read every comic book printed?). I think it's a matter of comic books being a number one hobby for many fans, while my hobbies are more varied, meaning I'm not an expert in regards to any one hobby, but hold a certain degree of knowledge in many. For this reason I find it can be difficult/intimidating to try and be involved in that community. No one wants to be shown up/ignorance exposed.

One guy on CV has over 120,000 posts. I wish I was making that up.
I don't find that all that surprising. There are plenty of people on these forums that are on track to do the same thing. Just create a topic about any little thought that pops into your head and you're halfway there. Fuck Google!
Tell me some great forum communities. If you think these forums are quality, I feel sorry for you. There are a lot of great forum communities out there, but Giantbomb does not number among them.

My mistake, it's over 140,000 now.

Not sure if it counts comments made on videos/articles either.

I'd buy that for a dollar.

Forum quality is almost directly related to how specific a topic the forum is about (as well as size of the user-base). Any website with a forum about "video games" is going to be general enough, and attract a big enough audience to be all sorts of janky. Now, a forum exlusively dedicated to Japanese imports from the Dreamcast, that's probably going to be a much healthier community.
Yeah, well we have a user who posts as though he's writing a poem all the time. There is a user who writes every fucking thing he (I'm assuming that) posts in Header 3 and then signs off with his initials.
DS (like that).
I want to punch him through the internet.

I feel as though we used to be a quality forum, but now I just see a large amount of hasty flames and trolling going on. You could say, in internet terms, "reading comprehension ftl." We're not too bad in terms of Video Game forums go, but that just speaks to how horrible nearly every other gaming forum is. I dare you to go to gamefaqs/spot forums, even. (and those aren't even that bad either!)
