I asked my friend this question today and he couldn't decide. Neither can I. I am curious to see which amazing sci-fi film, Star Trek or District 9, is better.
District 9 was an ingenious, smart, unique , and creative masterpiece while Star Trek was an entertaining, top class, amazing, blockbuster reboot.
Tell me what you think...
Star Trek or District 9?
D9, l don't like the idea of reboots. Studios need to learn to care for their IP, instead of raping it every 3 years with another 'just to get butts in seats" offering.
Having 3 tv series on the air at the same time really killed Trek imo.
Star Trek seemed to have too much filler that didn't advance the storyline, and not all of the characters felt 'real' to me.
District 9 was very good, but relied on anthropomorphism and other cheap film tricks to garner sympathy for the aliens. I think it could have been more powerful if they hadn't catered to the lowest common denominator so often.
Overall, District 9.
Star Trek. District 9 went off like a wet firecracker, then died a quiet death. No amount of CGI could make up for it's insipid story and flawed script.
is this even a serious question, district 9 is original whearas star trek was similar to batman begins in a bad way, its convoluded origin story and call backs to prior works made it unbearable.
I didn't care much for either.
District 9 was annoying and slow, the characters all came off as stupid and the whole social commentary thing is not for me. I prefer sci-fi without social commentary.
The new Star Trek movie was nothing more than a parody of Star Trek. It was ridicoulus and over the top and did not even attempt to capture what Star Trek is about. The fact that I hate JJ Abrams with a burning passion doesn't really help either.
I'm a huge Star Trek fan and what he has done with the Star Trek franchise is inexcusable.
Thankfully it was set in an alternate universe so the actual canon of Star Trek wasn't hurt that much. The Kirk and Spock etc that we saw in the movie were NOT the real actual Kirk and Spock, they were people in another universe, just like the mirror universe. Therefor their actions and what they did has no bearing on the canon. Enterprise was actually more of a canon violation and I hate ENT just as much as the new movie.
It was highly entertaining. It had a great story, great acting, tons of actions and special effects, lots of humor and it ended perfectly leaving you wondering how awesome the sequels will be. And it did the impossible, it made Star Trek cool! Everyone I know who saw this left the theater either surprisingly impressed because they werent sure about ST movies, or they were simply excited about the sequels. Can't say the same about people reactions after I saw D9.
District 9 was interesting and definitely a cool film but it wasn't nearly as great as all these fanboys made it out to be. The acting was inconsistant and the entire plot was a collection of plots taken from other, better, sci-fi films. (most notably THE FLY, and the filming style was ripped straight from United 93, which isn't a sci-fi but just goes to show the movie didn't have that much originality). The entire movie was totally predictable as well. I enjoyed the film for the most part, especially the effects which were fantastic, but other than that, the entire movie is totally overrated. I can see why some of you guys are like "ZOMG amazing sci-fi blahhh" but seriously, you need to just take a step back and maybe rewatch the film. It aint that good dude. Its about as good as Cloverfield.
District 9 is second to only Inglorious Basterds for most overrated film of 2009.
District 9 took me by surprise as I really had no idea what the overall tone of the film was before I saw it.
Star Trek seemed to have no urgency or danger to anything that happened outside of the initial opening sequence...I did really enjoy it though.

Echoes answer mournfully.
District 9 was cool....but I wasn't that impressed with it overall (can't put my thumb on it). I really liked Star Trek though so that gets my vote.

" @ArchScabby: Honestly, I thought Star 9 was better. "yeah but District trek, It's a trek through the district. How awesome is that? I bet they wear hiking boots too.
" Pros/Cons of Star TrekYou forgot Star Trek's music!
(-) Green girl.
(+) Dialogue and character development (spot-on casting).
(+) Explosions.
Pros/Cons of District 9 (-) Mockumentary style.(+) Bullet ball.(-) Way too black and white. Felt like I was watching a saturday morning cartoon with the evil corporation ("I %&*#ing hate prongs") and a protagonist learning what he did was wrong who then teams up with an alien species he discriminated against. The apartheid movement in South Africa is just not relevant anymore. (+) New take on alien contact. Still prefer the classic "They're zapping our President!" storylines. And note: I never watched an episode of Star Trek. "
