So I was doing some research on Steve Jobs and I came across his salary. Before reading further, I want you to guess what it is. Your guess will not even come close to what it really is. When you have your guess, read further.

$1.... One dollar!?
Sure he makes money through stock and other benefits, but I always assumed the CEO of one of the world's most profitable companies would at least have a six figure salary!
His second in command, the COO Tim Cook(An Auburn grad. War Eagle!) was estimated to receive a 59 million dollar bonus last year.

This is an extremely common thing CEOs of big companies do. I assume it's for tax reasons.

This is old news. I remember a big deal being made out of this, but as you say: money through stocks and other benefits. He's still obscenely rich. Even so, it's certainly better than CEOs that give themselves billion dollar bonuses.

Yeah I think his net worth is around 7 billion dollars. But Microsoft's CEO Steve Balmer gives himself a salary of 1.2 million so it came as a surprise when I saw Steve Jobs salary.

@Commando: By having a $1 salary and making all your money from  dividends you get off from paying all sorts of tax.

@slightconfuse:  yes, but steve did it as a joke. you can look it up. also, he was one of the first CEOs to do this as far as i know (i could be wrong about that).

it is kind of surprising, but a lot of CEOs have often went with stock options over a real salary ie the salary pays a standard wage. i guess when your stock options get too excessive you lower your wage to make it look better on the books. plus, i guess it would make sense for less taxes..

I don't actually think he takes money from apple at all (except for the one dollar). No dividends or bonuses or anything like that. All the money he would get stays invested the business. It's not like he needs it, and it's probably better off invested in apple than in any bank account. He owns billions of dollars worth of Disney stock from when he sold Pixar to them, and he uses the dividends from that to live on.

A lot of his purchases he probably charges to the company as business expenses. Since, ya know, he IS the CFO of Apple.

I don't know where you guys get the notion that the board of directors at Apple gave Steve Jobs a $1 salary for tax purposes. What do they care how much he gets taxed? (Also, I guess you people have never heard of capital gains tax, which is where the government bites Jobs on the ass) No, they did this to incentivize company growth. A CEO can rest on his company's laurels if he gets a big salary because he still gets paid if the company loses money or is forced to cut back in order to register profits. If his pay is entirely tied to company growth he has reason to invest in new products, new markets, and new ideas to help the company grow and to increase shareholder value.

When your salary is $1 your personal comfort is directly tied to your company's success.

If you've ever seen Steve Jobs old apartment, you'll know he's not one to spend money extravagantly. I imagine whatever money he does make is more than enough for his lifestyle.

well he probably has a few billion in the bank alraedy.
When your already super duper rich I can see why someone would do this in order to make them self feel good.

Would be nice if he donated whatever he should be paid to charity or something but I guess that would just be copying Bill Gates which is a big no no.

See, but that's why Steve Jobs is a rich bastard, because he spends his time thinking about what he can produce with his money, and not what he can consume.

@p_p_o_d:Again, he doesn't make this decision, the board of directors does. And the board of directors doesn't care about how much he gets taxed or how good he feels about himself, they care about how he can improve shareholder value, hence dictating a pay structure that is tied to company performance.

Actually after more research(for a final paper due today that I already turned in), he doesn't get bonuses. He does own a lot of stock in both Disney and Apple, but he also rents out his private jet to make hundreds of thousands of dollars per year.

I also believe apple as a company has 40 billion in hard cash in the bank, not assets. Hella rainy day fund, but it helps "speculators ", i mean investors sleep easy.
