You don't have to ever have touched drugs to get in one of those moods. I mean it's more than likely that you've thought about doing some if you listen to so-called stoner music, but you know what I mean, right?

i mean this song is far from your quintessential weed rap, i.e. dudes like wiz khalifa (i guess), curren$y (i think so), and cypress hills (most definitely)

obviously, rap is not the only avenue where you'll find music influenced by similar substances, and it's definitely not the only stuff I listen to when I'm in one of "those moods."

That would kind of defeat the idea of widening your horizons and striving to be a generally loving and accepting person that I get from listening to songs in this class of music. then again, the messages of songs like this are so often very much privy to the listener's interpretation, so go ahead and just ignore that last sentence if you find yourself disagreeing haha

You know what, now I'm kind of questioning the validity of classifying music under that wide of a subgenre. After all, creative people from all walks of life will find themselves experimenting with different substances more often than not, right? I figure impulsiveness has a lot to do with being creative, and while that impulsiveness doesn't always have to result in less-than-savory habits, nobody is really perfect, you know?

Damn, that was a long post.

Anyway, just post a couple songs you like if you're feeling the thread, and if you're not, feel free to tell me to soak my head or call me the other f-word, I don't really mind

Upon reviewing the selection of songs I culled for this topic, I don't think I really even know what stoner music is hahaha

would anyone care to clarify?

I'm trying to work out if you could have been more of a stereotype with this post.

At first I was going to say no, but then I realised you're lacking in "maaaaaan", "duuuuuuuude", and "braaaaaaaaah".

Improve that, though, and the sky is the limit!

Any song is good if you're high enough but I wanna see where this thread goes.

#7 Posted by RubberBabyBuggyBumpers (713 posts) -

these are definite stoner tunes. shpongle holds a special place in my heart. you don't even have to be high to "feel" their music. "star shpongled banner" is a trippy ass video!

threw in a single song by clutch. i love their old stuff!

I was inspired by that thread about the hypothetical planet-the-size-of-our-galaxy thread, so that's a thing i think

In metal and rock, bands categorized under the "stoner" subgenre usually have a muffled, low fidelity production.

@SarjuTheRapper: But man, Heems said it best

Pre-rolled, they roll, that's how we roll

All cause we rap about weed

I don't do that dog, I rap about me.

Tbh, I don't think you can specifically call anything stoner music, sure there's stuff influenced by it (weed rap, stoner rock, doom metal, psychadellic anything) but I wouldn't let that influence define the music entirely. I dunno, just my opinion.

And AnCo

Still anything by the Weeknd

This is still my favourite though; I can't wear it out, no matter how hard I've seemingly tried

Is Das Racist stoner music? They seem too intellectual and satirical to be appreciated by stoners; everyone I know who likes Das Racist is basically a hipster, because Das Racist is the hip hop equivalent of Stephen Colbert, as far as I can tell.

Anyway, here is my contribution to this stoner music thread:

Do very many stoners go back and look at the classics of stoner music and stoner film from years past? I'd like to believe they do.

I feel like stoner music can be applied to almost anything but whatever.

And Bob Marley because stereotypes.

#17 Posted by SarjuTheRapper (279 posts) -
@BisonHero: stoner rap, or no, they definitely espouse drug culture in their songs at least.

also that one song is a kind of funny deconstruction of the whole scene, i thought

What is it about bad rap that stoners love?

Is it the fact that weed is referenced frequently, validating their life choices?

On that note: THIS is how you appreciate the mystery of space, but in a way that is totally rad instead of causing arguments over a stupid giant planet:

heh people do weird stuff when they're high
#21 Posted by neozeke (378 posts) -

@BisonHero: They're kinda weedrap. They're really smart and lots of their stuff is coated in satire which is then coated in satire (Any interview where the interviewer asks about the meaning of combination pizza hut results with Kool AD laughing) they could very well be the best rappers to come along in awhile, they just don't give a fuck.

@kogasu:Whatever man, it's all about Amplifier Worship.

Granted I haven't listen to them at all in the past few years.

#26 Posted by defenestr8ed (36 posts) -

Not sure about how people define "stoner music" but if you're in one of those moods and are also into metal, Pelican usually does it for me. Saw them live at a smallish venue and they pretty much blew my head off. Probably should have worn earplugs, but hey, it was worth it anyway.

<3 Boris.

Begone with this stoner crap, psychedelia is where it's at!

"Turn of your mind, relax, and float downstream"

But, I guess Black Sabbath is pretty cool.

People have already made some pretty good choices with Electric Wizard, Sleep, and Boris. I'd contribute some more but I have to go to work. I have a feeling that this thread will be locked by the time I get back.

Doesn't Sleep have a really long song called Dopesmoker or something like that?

Anyway, I always thought that stoner music was in reference to stuff like this:

I guess I was wrong.
