A potential pandemic!
Swine flu!
"Should be in Off Topic. I'm actually getting a little worried about it. The media will always make too much of it, but this actually could be bad. Plus I hate being sick."or maybe under concept/disease....
"Propoganda? Idk but I just don't want to get that sick. They already said it was containable."so why is it in Europe already?
Any country with decent healthcare should be decently equipped to deal with it. It's not deadly, unless it goes untreated. And there are plenty of treatments available, and countries with decent healthcare have decent stocks of these treatments. It's nothing to worry about.
The main problem with containing something like the flu is it's extremely contagious. It's an airborne pathogen, that means it can undergo exponential increases in very short amounts of time. The mortality rate may indeed end up lower than early projections but the quantity of deaths is still going to be huge if it infects a large population of people.
"Any country with decent healthcare should be decently equipped to deal with it. It's not deadly, unless it goes untreated. And there are plenty of treatments available, it's nothing to worry about."trouble with pandemics are that they make healthcare impossible due to the incredibly strain they put on the system
"RetroIce4 said:It has? Last thing I heard they were treating a case in the UK but it turned out to be not the same strain of flu. Which European countries has it hit?"Propoganda? Idk but I just don't want to get that sick. They already said it was containable."so why is it in Europe already?"
It is a little worrying -- but I remember being worried about Bird Flu too.
It's in New Zealand too. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090426/ap_on_re_au_an/swine_flu_world
As someone not well versed in the area of epidemiology, I don't think my view on this will be worth stating.
Im still waiting for the SAR/bird flu hybred to bring about the pandemic to kill us all, swine flu will have to wait in line for my attention of mocking it and forgeting about it
Just like SARS, West Nile, and the Bird Flu, right? I really wish people would quit freaking out about these things...
Although, I was in the Tokyo airport during the SARS thing, and everyone was wearing the surgical masks, except for us group of white Americans, so that was a good time.

"MattyFTM said:Some of the common flu treatments work on this swine flu, and countries with decent healthcare facilities have plentiful supplies of these, and have the ability to manufacture more should they be needed. Quotes from my link above
I'm a specialist doctor in respiratory diseases and intensive care at the Mexican National Institute of Health. There is a severe emergency over the swine flu here. More and more patients are being admitted to the intensive care unit. Despite the heroic efforts of all staff (doctors, nurses, specialists, etc) patients continue to inevitably die. The truth is that anti-viral treatments and vaccines are not expected to have any effect, even at high doses. It is a great fear among the staff. The infection risk is very high among the doctors and health staff.
There is a sense of chaos in the other hospitals and we do not know what to do. Staff are starting to leave and many are opting to retire or apply for holidays. The truth is that mortality is even higher than what is being reported by the authorities, at least in the hospital where I work it. It is killing three to four patients daily, and it has been going on for more than three weeks. It is a shame and there is great fear here. Increasingly younger patients aged 20 to 30 years are dying before our helpless eyes and there is great sadness among health professionals here.
Antonio Chavez, Mexico City
I work as a resident doctor in one of the biggest hospitals in Mexico City and sadly, the situation is far from "under control". As a doctor, I realise that the media does not report the truth. Authorities distributed vaccines among all the medical personnel with no results, because two of my partners who worked in this hospital (interns) were killed by this new virus in less than six days even though they were vaccinated as all of us were. The official number of deaths is 20, nevertheless, the true number of victims are more than 200. I understand that we must avoid to panic, but telling the truth it might be better now to prevent and avoid more deaths.

Well i gotta say, i remember being shit scared of all the bird-flu problems and supposed pandemic the news constantly talked about...guess what? nothing happened.
Now this on the other hand...again has me extremely worried...but part of me thinks for nothing.

"We're all dead.No we ain't dude.
Shit"
That's from the Zombie Apocalypse, that will happen sometime in the next 3 years.
Yea there's been some suspicious cases of this SWINE FLU here in Spain, but they say it's treatable...
I'm slightly worried but not really.
Edit: just read what JudgeDread, okay now I'm worried.
It won't get much bigger than it is right now. It has a low fatality rate and even those that die are from countries that lack proper medical care.
"Death_Burnout said:Hell yeah it is! that's the way to go really...if you're gunna have an end of days...do it like it was hell, not some dumb ass flu virus."Dethfish77 said:That sounds more exciting""We're all dead.No we ain't dude. That's from the Zombie Apocalypse, that will happen sometime in the next 3 years."

Guys, I'm genuinely worried right now :\
I woke up this morning with a sore throat and I didn't really think much of it, although I very rarely get sore throats. Anyway later in the day I saw some of those stories about the swine flu, and then I saw that there was a school in San Antonio that closed down because of a few cases.
I live in San Antonio. So I thought "fuck". Now, my throat has gotten much worse, and I'm pretty sure I've convinced myself I'll immediately die.
Tell me I'm crazy please. This is a pretty fucking weird coincidence if I don't have this flu.

Fuck, New York is one of the four states that is affected.
Gonna start washing my hands like crazy :S
Hmm... I could go for some bacon right now.
I'm about as worried about this as I was bird flu, which isn't too much. Is there reason to be? I haven't read that much into it, but what differentiates this "epidemic" with the bird flu one?

The swine flu can and is.
They are basically closing down one of the cities next San Antonio because of it. Maybe I will get out of my college classes...
The reason the world health organiztion fears this so much is beacuse it has spread so quickly. I mean like in what 3 days it went form mexico to Europe and New Zeland and the other fear is wwhat if it mutates again and becomes even more lethal? but as we all know Drugs will cure all.

That is the major problem, not the symptoms it has now, but what they might become.
