There are terms that drive me crazy.  Sometimes I don't have an actual, rational reason for hating these terms I just...well, I just hate them.  I guess sometimes you don't need a valid reason to not like something, right?  Well, below I'll list the terms that I just can't f'ing stand whether I have a good reason for that hate or not.

-Hardcore Gamer
Oh my GOD do I hate this term.  Every time I hear it or read it I roll my eyes.  It is such a ridiculous term made by marketing people to divide our community creating an 'us versus them' mentality for the supposed 'hardcore' because, for some reason, we as a community have bought in to that nonsense.  It leads to ridiculous complaints and angry rants that are fueled by an identity that was created so that publishers and hardware developers could sell things to us.  I guess the main reason for the hate is that people like me have bought in to this term and fit themselves into the identify that comes with it.

-Lolcats
My f'ing God.  I don't think I need to explain this one do I?  I like IGN more then it appears a lot of the other Giant Bombers do on these forums but whenever I see "LOLCats" image at the very bottom of the IGN homepage I just get instantly irritated.

-Jock
This is an old one that I really have never liked.  I would have been called a jock in high school if I ever let anyone get away with calling me that (which I didn't) because I was on my high school's football team.  That term comes with supposed behaviors and attitudes that sell the apparent 'jock' short.  I didn't fit the stereotype 'jock' in terms of my attitude, my habits, or any other way besides the fact that I enjoyed playing and watching sports.  The big problem I have with the term is that it tries to fit a fully three dimensional person into a two dimensional identity (sort of like 'hardcore gamer').

So, what about the rest of you.  What terms drive you mad?

Just 'Gamer'.

I understand it has its uses, but I still cannot stand it. You don't call someone who enjoys movies a 'Movier', or someone who frequently reads books a 'Booker' (although that would be really cool). So why gamer?

When ever somebody says "f'ing" instead of fucking or "f" instead of fuck.

Also noob, owned, and pwned.  Even ironically it grates on my nerves.

EDIT: Oh, and I just remembered, "kthxbye" makes me want to push a steak knife through the temple of the person who said it.

Tryhard or Try Hard - Whenever I'm doing well on any sort of multiplayer shooter, I'm called this. It's aggravating because they are saying that it is wrong that I want to focus on the game. What else am I going to do.

Not sure if it counts, but I'm getting sick of hearing everything described as an 'experience'. Those two XBox guys on the day zero E3 Bombcast made me want sell my 360 and all my games. Instead of wtaching TV we now have 'TV experiences'. Ugh. It almost made me re-experience the dinner experience I'd had earlier.

You'd call somebody who frequently goes to movies a moviegoer/filmgoer and somebody who frequently reads books a reader.

HARDcore gamer: Tbh, i always think about the hardcore scene back in 91-92. And as a was on Mysteryland in 96. This is still a music term for me^^

but yes, hardcore gamer is a retarted say. Am i hardcore? Tbh, i dont know. I just enjoy games now and then. If im any hardcore(as the classify me) the it is to SSF4/AE. I love that game, and im deadly seriouse when i play it. Other than that? Zelda a hardcore game? It's a fan game for sure. Metroid? (love that game though^^) It's a good game but not a huge seller in the west.

so! Hardcore games. Public high? Or underground fan? Who know? Why?

HC game is what public sales are good and what ppl rave about on forums. Myself? BF3 is about the only Hc game i know i want atm. Other than that? hmmmm.

ffs, stop putting games in a both. Even a party game(wii party.....something, is a hardcore game for atleast 1 person in the world)

so just stop with the hardcore. Fun is fun, and tbh? Many ppl stopped having fun and started beeing "hardcore2 gamers. My 2 cent(25 øre in my country^^)

@CL60: You can, but nobody does is casual conversation as it's assumed that almost everybody appreciates movies and books to some degree. And thanks to mobile/facebook, I think games have reached that ubiquity too and are deserving of the same consideration.

Hardcore gamer is at the top of my list as well. It's fucking atrocious.

I would also like to include the majority of internet lingo (pwned, lmao, roflcopter, failboat, epic win etc.) and gangsta speak (double negatives, aks instead of ask etc.)

Beast when used as an adjective. "My sniper skills are beast!"

People pronouncing the silent P in 'Pwn'. It's pronounced "Owned" you 2000 generation ignoramuses. "You got PONED, duuuurrrrrr!"

These modern iterations of leet speak annoy me horribly.

If we're talking about terrible pronunciations: Liberry instead of library. So more I hate:

  • Popcorn flick/popcorn entertainment
  • Shut my brain off for (insert time period)
  • Any Giant Bomb meme ever
  • Cool Story Bro

The word "gamer" has always been a huge one for me (and for the record, Jeff is totally with us on this), but I'm increasingly more tolerant of it. I'm also super not down with memes, spoken or otherwise.

Other than that, there aren't many. Although if you say a situation is "sketch" instead of "sketchy," you can fuck ALL THE WAY OFF.

Well, I get where you're coming from with f'ing but the reason why I did it on the OP is because I don't know who is going to read my posts on here.  I don't want a father to read my post with his daughter in his lap with a swear word staring them down.  Sometimes I don't care about that but I guess today I did.

Because game is a verb, movie and book aren't. Watch and read are both verbs, hence why people are called watchers and readers.

Saying or typing "WOB WOB WOB" in reference to bass wobble. I'd rather hear their death rattle.

Calling a game "visceral". Goddammit, marketers. That DOESN'T MEAN ANYTHING IF YOU KEEP USING IT LIKE THAT. It barely means anything as a descriptor anyway!

Don't know if this counts, but using the word "Unleashed" in a title, especially if it's a sequel. Are you telling me that the first game was indeed leashed, and that you were holding back on us? Why should I trust that the sequel is, as you say, entirely unfettered? I mean, I trusted you the first time, and now I find that I got a raw deal? Why would you hold back, anyway? Sequels are never a sure thing with a new IP, so give it your all the first time!

Most of all, "bias". Rather, "bias" as it's used these days, to paint somebody as untrustworthy because they like/dislike ANYTHING that the accuser feels differently about.

I have to concur. While the overused hardcore gamer is not on the top of my list, it is a tired term who's vestiges could not dissipate fast enough for me. I would like to add to that onomatopoeia. Bling is not a word that means money. How gangsta are you really when using onomatopoeia like a 3rd grader? These tropes make you sound like an uneducated, knuckle dragging troglodyte trying to communicate through grunts and groans.

I've been trying to stop using the term "hardcore" and especially "hardcore gamer".

Seriously, think about what you're saying. Your "hardcore"? Really? There is nothing "hardcore" about you. Y'know who's hardcore? Delta Force. SAS. Free-climbers and cliff divers. That guy from Community who stapled something to his head. You play video games as a hobby.
