If I had to place my marbles somewhere, the most important moment in history, for me, was the assassination of Harvey Milk.

The moment I was conceived. Without that, I wouldn't be able to sit here and think about what I consider the most important historical moment.

It was the day that Isaac Newton split the atom after seeing Christopher Columbus fall out of a tree and get into a bath.

The Industrial Revolution. The introduction of the idea that you can own your ideas and make money off of inventing started a technological firestorm that hasn't ended yet. 
 
Other than that World War II, for obvious reasons.

Aftermath of World war II pretty much defines modern society today. The most important moment in history to be honest is an awful question, a better one is 'what is the most important moment in modern history?' Which pretty much sums up Medieval to now.

When the Romans killed Jesus.  I'm not trying to be religious here, but if it weren't for the religion based around him, history would be completely different. For example, the Crusades never would have happened. Chances are antisemitism wouldn't have been as extreme without Christianity, so The Holocaust may not have happened. There's so many things that would have happened differently that I can't possibly list them all.  
 
But here's one that impacts gamers. Without this happening, Dante would never have written the Divine Comedy, and Dante's Inferno the game would not have happened. Which may have been a good thing. 

Couldn't tell you, because only the last, what? 10,000 years are accurately recorded, right? And how long has the Earth existed?

For the people who are saying "it hasn't happened yet"... 
uh. You do know what the word "history" means, right? Shit in the past. So for you to say "it hasn't happened yet" makes no sense.

Umm I don't even know what to call it. The beggining of everything? Before time. I believe it is theorized that the big bang and the creation of the universe is cyclic so I would have to say whatever started it.

For modern society, probably the aftermath of WWII. For the entirety of the planet... I have no idea.

In the history of the universe, probs the transformation of earth from lump of space rock to planet capable of supporting life.  
In the history of humans, the day one of our ancestors realised it was way easier to skin an animal using a sharp rock and though "yeah, i could probs make a habit of this".  
In the history of games i would have to say the last generation in general (PS2, X-Box, Gamecube) coz it moved the games industry from "were a company of 15 people and we make video games" to "were a multinational corporation that makes and distributes video games, we also make millions in profit every year for our shareholders". 
In the history of me, aside from my actual creation, i would have to say the time between me leaving high school and now (almost three years).

The first thing that comes to mind is Columbus, ahem, 'discovering' America. That, and all the events after, led to the nation we see today. Now I ask you this. Think about all the good AND bad associated with American history. I mean it all. Then think about the stuff it lead to.
 
Example #1: Rock music. Black people are commonly given credit for inventing rock music as it was known back in the 1940-50s if memory serves right. If black people were never brought over to America, who can honestly say that rock music would be as it is today? Or that it would even exist for that matter? Something the entire worlds knows and loves may not exist if this one man didn't land in the wrong place. I mean set back and just think about it.
 
Example #2: The creation of McD's (or whatever fast-food chain came first. I'm too lazy to look it up right now). This has literally created another world wide phenomenon. Fast-food is freaking everywhere.
 
I can't stress this enough: I mean, just think about all the stuff that spawned out of America and all the things that spawned from those and so on and so on. It's fucking nuts.
 
Well I guess the formation of Britain is even more important since they in turn 'created' America...or at the very least planted the seed. Holy shit, I just blew my own mind.

The day the toilet was invented.  I like that poo disappears.

The moon landing. I've seen it written better than I will be able to say it, but the farther we get from that moment the more important it will become. When there are colonies in space no one is going to care very much about WWII, the Crusades, having a President darker than a hamburger bun or a thousand other things that seem important now. More than Sputnik, Gagarin or the ISS the Apollo missions were the first time humanity reached for the stars and succeeded. The first steps of humanity on another world (kind of) trumps anything that has come before. It was also the first step towards the long term survival of life itself beyond the survival of earth. A thousand years from now the biggest part of the timeline of ancient earth school kids will have to remember is July 20th 1969.

The great space-caveman / dinosaur war of 6001 B.C

Prehistoy - The invention of cultivated agriculture.   Moving mankind from being nomadic hunter-gatherers to stationary farmer and herders gave him an opportunity to exchange ideas and develop concepts without out the daily fear of starvation.  
 
Civilized history - the invention of the movable type printing press.  Basically, it made education feasible for all people.   
 
Video game history - PC games connect online is probably the most significant as we look toward the future, but I'm going to say the release the Apple II computer.  As soon as amateur game makers were able to afford their own platforms on which to create, games with more complexity than Pong and Space Invaders began to appear.  Later the Commodore 64, Sinclair Spectrum and early IBM PC's continued this opportunity for "out of the basement" game design, but it started with the Apple II. 

So far,Independency.

Universe: The Big Bang. It gave us life, the universe and everything! 
Prehistory: The invention of tools. For hunting, killing, skinning, chopping... Jeez, humanity's humble beginnings say a lot about us, don't they? On second thought: The rise of human consciousness due to the increase in brain mass, which allowed for more abstract thinking, invention, religion, metaphysics, etc. 
History: Writing. Formalization of knowledge without the need for oral history. Record keeping (accounting or historical) also got a lot easier. Not to mention that the need to actually read the written stuff leads to a uniform education and language beyond the little village, allowing for bigger communities and *gasp* nation building.
