That lightsabre (if it actually is a lightsabre) looks pretty stupid.
The Star Wars: Episode VII trailer
The lightsabre looks like it should be in No More Heroes.
Anyway it looks like a generic big budget action movie from the trailer which is what I was expecting but still kinda disappointing. It being set on Tattooine (which I've seen enough of to last 20 lifetimes) doesn't help.
Well, in fairness, what else is it gonna be? I would totally watch a minimalist found footage star wars movie though....

I dunno, something a bit lower key than SOLDIERS AND SPACE BATTLES AND SITH ALL THE TIME would be nice.
What I am basically saying is I really want a Republic Commando movie. I Jedi would be cool too.
JJ Abrams is going to do nothing but nerd wish fulfillment for two hours and that's fine. Jar Jar decapitated in the first scene.

I'm ok if this ends up being how the movie goes :p
Are those supposed to be two small flames coming out of the lightsabre or two other mini sabres? Seems rather unwieldy to have two columns of danger coming out of the side of your weapon but maybe it has a point.
Anyways, as far as teasers go, it was... well a teaser, kind of all of the shots you would expect, didn't give me enough to love or hate it really, it's a new Star Wars in the hands of someone more capable then Lucas, so that's enough for me to give it a watch, I did like the camera work with the Falcon at the end.
Not a fan of the pseudo claymore lightsaber.
Big fan of the cute rolling robot.
Did I misunderstand the previous films - I thought all stormtroopers were clones of Jango Fett?
I think the original group was yes, but those clones are what, 18 years older by the time New Hope happens? I figure they'd started to replace them at that point.

99% of them were dead by the time New Hope started and the ones that weren't were Vader's Fist. They all have super fast aging so by the time of this movie all of them are dead or senile.
Looks pretty fucking gooooooooood. I don't really consider myself a huge Star Wars fan, but I'm still dying to see it.
Also, I need to watch Attack the Block one of these days...

Attack the Block is so good.
@metal_mills: And it was always a terrible idea.
There are a whole bunch of weird lightsabre designs in the EU though. And the films completely disregard the EU anyway.
The ending was pretty cool, the way they cut in the music with scene and the sound of the Tie Fighters!
That was about it, everything was just plain trailer stuff. Guy talking over random scenes.
@metal_mills: Where's that image from, the Extended Universe? Georgie boy himself said the EU wasn't part of the official canon.
"The DaaAAAAarrrkk side"
That part was really cingey. Otherwise, I can't tell much about the quality of the movie from the trailer. It was more like a teaser.
Aaaah come on man, Andy Serkis is not cringey! And officially it was called a teaser.
I really hope the script is better than both JJ directed Star Trek movies so it becomes more than a forgettable blockbuster.
@corevi: It is going to be a big budget action movie because that's what Star Wars movies are the origin of in the first place, however from the trailer you can't really say anything specific is going to happen except that there's Stormtroopers and a guy with a hilt saber. Tatooine is fine for opening sequences, how else are they going to introduce Boba Fett into the plot?
A buddy of mine who is a huge Star Wars fan just perfectly put my misgivings into words, he said it looks like the biggest-budget fan film ever made, right down to the title. "Yo, you guys like X-Wings and stormtroopers and crazy-shaped lightsabers? The Force Awakens, made by Star Wars fans for Star Wars fans, check out our Kickstarter!"
Also the leaks were true so this is what the Sith looks like: http://imageserver.moviepilot.com/sithinquisitor-star-wars-episode-7-grave-robber-s-lightsaber-is-lethal-and-pointy-star-wars-episode-7-the-new-villain-is-darth-revan.jpeg?width=640&height=640

Andy Serkis is a great actor and this was bad. Although I guess asking no-one to menacingly say "The Dark Side" in Star Wars is equivalent to expecting a Kingdom Hearts game without someone rambling about "The Darkness".
I like it. And I haven't been excited for a Star Wars film since before Phantom Menace came out.
I don't expect a Shawshank Redemption style Star Wars plot. I just expect well executed Hero's Journey with some humor and tension filled lightsaber battles.
1. Black Stormtrooper still ain't found shit.
2. The lightsaber is fucking legit.
3. X-WINGS!
4. MILLENIUM. FUCKING. FALCON. BITCHES!
Hype train is officially rolling on the tracks. I only saw one instance of lens flare that came close to being a little visually offensive, but then MILLENIUM FALCON.
That lightsaber looks dumb and the subtitle is still dumb BUT I GUESS I STILL LIKE STAR WARS ANYWAYS.
Okay, the lightsaber would've seemed less dumb if the sides didn't turn on after the main saber part. Darth Maul's double-bladed saber, it ain't.
I've always really liked the idea of a stormtrooper good guy.
@jakob187: No combs in sight :(
Okay. I've come around on the lightsaber.
It's nice that the look of it is still reminiscent of old Star Wars, even though it's clearly fancy modern CGI. New stormtrooper helmets look odd (looks like they're all crying), but it's 30 years later so whaaaatever. Empire had to shake things up a bit.
The sounds are great too.
i think they're ticking all the boxes that will ensure this is a success- fan-favourite ships, the sounds, little tweaks like the new lightsaber.
but ultimately i personally don't really give a shit about the special effects- there are plenty of movies that exist as showpieces for the state of that art. what i hope for is unique creature designs, memorable characters, and interesting new narrative directions. i don't need 'ulysses' levels of nuance- but they need characters worth caring about.
so i'm cautiously optimistic, but we'll see. JJ isn't exactly known for dealing in fantastic stories.
@jakob187: No combs in sight :(
What about Picks though?
Well... that looks a lot like what I expected a Star Wars movie directed by J.J. Abrams to look like.
And that lightsaber... man. On one hand I'm not saying that a laser cross guard doesn't make sense. Seems like a good idea to protect your hands. But it looks pretttty silly. And makes the lightsaber a lot less subtle.
