The stripe below the lip?!?

After the Sony press conference last night, there was some person reporting on GameTrailers, along with Geoff Keighley, who had that little strip/stripe of hair below his bottom lip. It bugged the hell out of me, I just wanted to rip it off. Does anyone know what the hell is up with that, as that isn't the first time I have seen it? Is it just for people who can't grow an actual beard or something?

it's called a soul patch. it kind of bothered me also. it wasn't because it was there but because i thought that it looked crooked or something.
