Actually the term of a government is a constitutional federal presidential republic. Also in modern terms the word "democracy" refers to these constitutional republics like the United States.

It has elements from both. National elections are all about republic stuff while state and local elections are heavily democratic(proposition #'s).

A republic is a representative democracy, in that democracy is achieved through representative votes for the people on behalf of elected leaders.  A republic is a form of democracy, and this thread is a waste of time.

Close, but really the US is a democracy in a republic.  A republic isn't simply a form of democracy, and we do get to vote on specific issues, from time to time.

There isn't enough power given to the people in most so called western democracies to call themselves "true democracies". At best you get a choice between this or slightly this. Legislation and true power is in the hands of the executive and judges as well as those that can gain access to them, i.e. corporations, lobby groups and people with money and vested interests. At times it feels like a sham but no one wants to admit it.

Nein. A democracy is just what it says: "people rule," i.e. the people vote directly on issues.

Certain states in the US could be construed to be democracies (the ones that allow public referendums to decide amendments to the state constitutions), but the US itself is not. In fact, the US Constitution specifies exactly the words: "Republican Form of Government." And the country as a whole never gets to vote on specific issues.

As for why people use the word "democracy"...well one is because many people are pretty stupid about matters governmental, but mostly because "democracy" as an ideal is a lot easier to sell to countries than "republic," and we've been doing a lot of such selling since European feuding almost blew the world up a couple times a while back.

Really, as long as you don't use it ignorantly, (like claiming you have some mythical "rights" because "this is a democracy!") I think the word is fine. Close enough.

Exactly, I think most people would. Because republicans (that aren't named Ron Paul) are usually these neo-cons who have changed the meaning of the name to what ever they want to do.

Democracy:
1. A system of government by which political independence is retained by the people and exercised directly by citizens.
2. A constitutional republic where the people have a voice through their elected representatives.

By the second definition, America is a democracy. It's also a republic.

I think by democracy they mean it in the more general sense, as in a state in which all people are equally represented.
When I opened this thread I expected a 'lol its a republic not a democracy so obama and all those other pussy libs' etc. etc....

It's both, but a republic first, a democracy second. The democratic part should be to decide who is in charge of interpreting and protecting th laws of the land

No, it's not.  That our democratic process occasionally entails direct democratic votes does not change the fact that the United States is a representative democracy.  Every system has built in variances for specific reasons, but that doesn't change the fundamental nature of the system.

The United States is a representative democracy.

Quoting Wikipedia: "A Republic is a state or country that is not led by a hereditary monarch, but in which  the people (or at least a part of its people) have an impact on its government.

"A Democracy is a form of government in which the supreme power is held completely by the people under a free electoral system"

[TwoOneFive]
"This is a republic, not a democracy"
We're both

[ShadowSkill11]
>National elections are all about republic stuff while state and local elections are heavily democratic(proposition #'s)

Did you make it republic because once we elect a national official we have little say in what bills they pass?

[BionicNinja]
>A republic is a representative democracy, in that democracy is achieved through representative votes for the people on behalf of >elected leaders.  A republic is a form of democracy

If you read in Wikipedia, neither is a subset of the other (there's weird exceptions like some countries elect lifetime kings, etc.), though most democracies are a form of a republic.

[sheisty_shogun]
>What? A republic usually refers to a representative democracy where the people elect a head of state (example: president).

See above

[HitNRun]
>Nein. A democracy is just what it says: "people rule," i.e. the people vote directly on issues.
[giyanks22]
>Yes but in a democracy the people vote on all laws and bills. In a republic we just elect the officials who vote on the laws and the bills.

No, a democracy/republic only states how people "are put into office," not the issues themselves. For example you can have these types of  democracies (quoting Wikipedia):

"Representative Democracy involves the selection of government officials by the people being represented"
"Direct Democracy is a political system where the citizens participate in the decision-making personally, contrary to relying on intermediaries or representatives"
