Mainstream music nowadays is so boring and dull. They lack soul, meaning and good beats. Now it's all about money, fame, sex and gangsta wannabes. Today's music is dominated by all these clubbing and R&B artists, and they suck. I hate them. I basically stopped listening to the radio a few years ago because all I hear are just utter nonsense. Same goes with music videos. All I see on MTV are artists dressing like prostitutes, club scenes, sex scenes and again gangsta wannabes. It's just so revolting to look at. I mean, I'm fine with having sexy scenes on music videos because who won't want to see them...but there's a limit to it. And they say video games are bad for the kids.
What happened to all the alternative and rock bands? I don't see them or hear them anymore. They've suddenly gone underground as they are dominated by these foolish genre. At least that's how I see it. Last time there was Rage Against The Machine, Limp Bizkit, Korn, Three Doors Down, Evanescence, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Staind, Green Day, Sum 41, etc. Even though most of them haven't been active in terms of making new albums, what about the new rock artists? I'm sure they've been wanting to release some new rock tunes of their own but they can't because today's music is dominating the ring, making the rock genre fall on deaf ears. Does that make me only a heavy metal and rock enthusiast? No, not true at all. I'm a universal listener because I grew up listening to all kinds of music ranging from pop, dance, hip-hop, techno, classical, oldies, even R&B's. Toni Braxton, Boyz II Men, 2Pac, Coolio, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston. They were all great when suddenly the genre slowly turned sour and the music became souless and meaningless.
So what do I do know? I go back to basic. Over the past few years I've been listening to old music ranging from the 60's until the late 90's such as Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, Duran Duran, Pink Floyd, Abba, Run-DMC, Beastie Boys, Ace of Base, AC/DC, The Beatles, Three Dog Night, The Police, etc. I never thought I'd be doing it but it felt really good. I find 80s and 90s boy bands to be more relaxing and fun to listen to than today's garbage. Oh, and let's not forget video game soundtracks. Akira Yamaoka, Masafumi Takada, Frank Klepacki, Koji Kondo, Nobuo Uematsu; they're simply the best.
Today's Music Sucks

Anything mainstream, at least these days, is for jerks.
Even though I totally agree, I won't pass this chance up:
You're not looking hard enough; music is amazing today.
Also there was plenty of trash in the 60s and 70s etc. but do you know what? People forgot about that and only remember The Beatles,Led Zep .etc. Decades from now people will probably look back on the 00s by cherrypicking a few key groups/movements like we have.
So yeah, you're completely wrong.
Lady gaga's new stuff is quite good imo. Her new song reminds me of ace of base. You might also like eminem's new cd too.

"If that's what counts as "good" then I don't even want to imagine what is bad. I can't listen to "Poker Face" for more than two seconds without wanting to jam a pen into my ear drums. What a useless talentless bitch. The only reason she's famous is because of those retarded music videos.Lady gaga's new stuff is quite good imo. Her new song reminds me of ace of base. Its not surprising considering the over-sexualisation that occurs in the media these days. Christina Aguilera's ads for the new video are just ridiculous. I haven't seen the new video, but a girl as talented vocally as she is (whether you like her music or not, you can't say she cannot sing) and who originally was gorgeous back in the Genie in the bottle days...its sad that she felt the need to go down this route.

As for music nowadays..thats mostly a taste thing. I look at the EU top 10 and sigh regularly, but I'm not the target demographic anymore...so it really doesn't matter what I think.
I actually looked at the bands that you cited in the middle paragraph and sighed mightily. If Korn/Limp Bizkit/Evanescene and Staind are what are considered modern musics guardians against mediocrity..we've got problems.
Lady Gaga is amazing. And alejandro was inspired by the Ace of Base song "don't turn around".
Mainstream changes from time to time. Like you said, there was an alternative rock phase, now it is in this poor rap phase. It'll change soon enough.
Such a stupid, stupid thing to say.
hai guyz i m h4rdc0r3 bcuz i listen to old music
Seriously, there's a lot of good music. If you only listen to Lady Gaga, that's your fault! Look harder, not every single song released in 2010 is mainstream hipster shit! Blatant ignorance!
Record sales in no way means talent and/or what is good.
My interaction is done with you.
Not really. Both had great albums but now they are just shadows of what they once were.
TBH I'm the odd man out here. Though I'm 25 i was brought up on rock 'n' roll, musicals, Bowie and the Clash.
Rock is subjective...I think minus the bear are fantastic, but I wouldn't listen to Audioslave (no matter how much I like Rage and Soundgarden)
I'm also a guitarist, so I think that probably factors in to it.
As one guy said, its all just phases.
Next up, the swing re-revival.....which actually might be awesome
You need to search for your own music through the internet. That's the only way I've been in touch with some great alternative rock.
Every single generation has complained about the next generations music. Nothing has changed in 50 years.
Music comes in cycles. Rock, to pop, to over produced, to under produced, and back again. Not to mention, no matter what the "current trends" are, you're always going to have an affinity for the music you listened to growing up, usually around the high school years. Just about nobody only listens to the popular music of the day, always and forever. Most people like the popular music from when when they were a teenager and then complain that today's music isn't as good as that. Just ask your parents.
Your parent thought your music sucked.
Their parents though their music sucked.
Congratulations, you're getting old.
I thought the music of the 80's sucked while it was going on and so I educated myself during that time by exploring the music of the 50's 60's and 70's. I'm glad I did because I became a much more rounded listener and was able to spot influences in newer bands as they appeared on the charts. I believe that there is an element of every generation that hates the music of their time which is why the alternative and college band genres exists. There is good stuff out there but just like Husker Du and The Smiths weren't radio friendly when I was in school, worthwhile bands of today must be sought out. You're not going to get good stuff by turning on the radio (unless you listen to specific satellite radio stations), you're going to have to ask around, sample bands and do searches via the internet for new material that appeals to your tastes. Still, don't ignore the classics, too. There are many great bands from past generations that you should get to know. Also, I recommend taking a listen to other genres like jazz (traditional & Latin), the blues, zydeco, and old-school hip hop.
Haha, no way. I enjoyed 80s music as well as the other music before it back then. I know there are still good bands/ music out there but last time everything that was new was so easy to access. It seemed that they came to you very naturally and easily but now, you have to search for it." I thought the music of the 80's sucked while it was going on"
Will do. Thanks!"I recommend taking a listen to other genres like jazz (traditional & Latin), the blues, zydeco, and old-school hip hop."
Their is plenty fo good music being released today, regardless of genre. You are not going to find it on the radio, or in any major record store though. The internet is a great tool for finding new music. GO listen to the differnt types of Electronic music, probably an entire world of music you never even dreamed of, aside from every other genre that isn't rock! (Lots of good indi and underground hip hop out there too!)
I would highly suggest these sites.
http://www.liveplasma.com/
http://techno.org/electronic-music-guide/ (great starting point for electronic music, although slight subjective with his opinions, gives a good sense of what is out there)
Go forth and find new music!

Locking yourself in a closet and playing Zeppelin is bound to make you popular. Open your eyes a little bit. See what this decade has to offer, you'll have more fun, trust me.
how can you measure how good music is theres not some sort of system. its all about what you like if you like gaga listen to gaga. if you like nevershoutnever listen to him. if you like aerosmith listen to them
Why is it that whiny hipsters such as yourself like to pretend the pop they like was somehow meaningful or artistically inspired compared to the pop music they don't like?
Mainstream music has sucked for the most part since the 80's. There's been very few bands that have been popular since then that are actually interesting. As with most mediums, the shit floats to the top, and you'll have to dig a little to find the really good stuff.
Ahh the good ole' "Back in my day, things were better" argument. There's a reason they created the whole "Alternative" genre -- because it WASNT mainstream back then. It was an alternative to listening to what many complained of back then as mainstream garbage. There was plenty of junk on the radio then as there is now and plenty of bands that are now big were relatively unknown back then. One could very easily argue that the techno or pop that received mainstream popularity of the 90s was "soulless", or that there were a ton of cash-in New Wave bands in the 80s that were just regurgitating what was "in" at the time. We could go further back to the 50s and 60s and look at how many "soulless" fab four knock offs were created to cash in on their popularity...
There has always been and there will always be good and bad music. It's not going to suddenly all turn sour. Just don't focus on the negative and look for stuff that appeals to you. If you're having a hard time finding any, maybe you're looking in the wrong places, or the wrong genres.
It fits all." I like video game music. The theme for Guile's stage in Street Fighter II (SNES) is fantastic. "
There is a ton of great music from this era, or "TODAYS" as you put it. You're just not trying hard enough to find it. Contemporary radio has always been pop-oriented.
By the way, I'm not trying to insult you, but saying something along the lines of "I DON'T LISTEN TO TODAY'S MUSIC, I INSTEAD LISTEN TO FORMER MAINSTREAM POP ACTS -- JUST FROM DIFFERENT ERAS: SUCH AS ZEPPELIN, THE BEATLES, AND BOB DYLAN!" That's not unique, it's pretentious. Also, it's fairly ironic that you hate what's popular now, but LOVE what was popular then.
Once again, music is alive and well. Just find out where the good stuff is.
To the OP...you need to stop relying on the stupid radio and look elsewhere, in other genres. My friend got me into Sharon Jones & Dap Kings, who will be appearing at the Jazz Festival next month here.
Too many people are too lazy to find the good music, which is plentiful. They just hope the Top 40 Stations will stop playing Lady Gaga songs.
For the record, never heard any of her songs. I don't think she's my cup of tea. Seems to be the kind of recording artist people are embarrassed to admit they dig.
Since April with 300,000 views. I can only think of the Call of Duty 4 finale when I hear the song now." @ThePhantomnaut:
Aww I deleted the post. There's so many variations of it. The below is my favorite. How did I miss this meme. How old is it?
