Top 5 albums of all time.

Yes, it's me again with another music related post. I thought it would be interesting to know what peoples favorite albums were. There are just a few albums that make you just go wow after listening to them. These are albums you can just sit through from start to finish without doing anything else.

Here are mine:

castaway and cutouts is awesome..doesnt fit with the rest of your selection but thats the beauty of it. Hail to the thief is so much better than In rainbows IMO though

2- Refused - The shape of punk to come (i know its a bit high but i feel like its the only one that from my generation)

hard... if you asked my 15 years ago i probably wouldve answered 36th Chambers or Doggystyle, before that it wouldve been And Justice for all.

Discovery got me into music, and I remember staying up REAL late just to catch the first four videos from it on Toonami; London Calling is my favorite (and the best) rock record ever, and led to an interesting bleached blond haircut during my junior year of high school (wanted to pull off a mix of Paul Simonon and Johnny Rotten); Hospice helped me get over losing my father, and I admired its narrative; Loaded is the album I gave to the first beauty queen-type that I had the courage to ask out; and Turn On the Bright Lights is the album I listened to when I found out she had a boyfriend. Years later, A New Chance is the (perfect) pop record I put on to forget about all of my young adult nonsense -- finishing my degree, the girlfriend, my nine-to-five as a college administrator -- and just drift away to Sweden's (and Eric Berglund's) most blissful place.

This is really hard for me, mostly because I hate eliminating things because many albums are just soo good its hard to choose. I love all types of music! But if you force me to choose, here goes (in no particular order, its hard enough for me to narrow it down this much):

Counting Crows - Recovering the Satellites (A Long December was the first song that ever made me interested in finding out who sung it, and started my love of music. This will always be my favorite band.)

Winnowing down a top 5 is a bit too taxing on my brain at 1:45 am, but my favorite album is Born to Run. The songs are great, and the way they play off each other thematically and tonally over the course of the album is just masterful.

Please note that these tend to change a lot, however these albums were really influential to me as I was growing up, from when I was learning to play the guitar (Songs for Sanity) to coping with my moves from both Utah to South Korea, and from South Korea to Virginia (Start Something), and from my constant travels (From Depths of Dreams).

Not a single mention for Dark Side of the Moon. All of you should be throughly ashamed of yourselves.

Oh, yeah...Led Zeppelin IV, Dark Side of the Moon and Abbey Road were the soundtracks of my teenage years. When everyone else was listening to Bon Jovi, Poison, Warrant, Mötley Crüe and those other 'guys or girls?' bands, my uncle made damn sure I knew what real music was. 
 
Led Zeppelin IV in particular, I've heard a million times and still love every fucking song on that tape...err..CD...err...the MP3s. Seriously, this was the...tape...we listened to during our D&D games because...it just fit.
 
I found |\| | |/| early on, before Downward Spiral, and really enjoyed how different it sounded, and the soundscapes were deep (especially Sanctify and Something I Can Never Have). 
 
Bush...after Grunge it was good to hear someone creating deep soundscapes again (listen to Alien...or stuff on their other albums like Greedy Fly, Letting the Cables Sleep, etc.). Sixteen Stone was a breath of fresh air right when I was about to give up on music.

Not my favorite Pink Floyd album but they are pretty close to being on my list. I could argue myself into it because its "better" but I made my list based on what I have listened to the most over the years. I have spun up many bands more often then my cherished Pink Floyd.

I came in here hoping for a discussion on the top 5 albums that have generated massive influence throughout the years and actually made sure that most of the albums here were even made. Also, not a single mention for Revolver. What a damn shame really.

It's not even their best album IMO, and I'm a huge fan (see the user name). And that opinion has absolutely nothing to do with the fact one of my former roommates played it to death.

I don't know if I'd put a Modest Mouse album in my top 5 of all time, but if we're talking about albums as a package, We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank (or something like that) flows very well, mostly due to including subdued, quiet riffs from the next track at the end of the previous one. Call it what you want, it works.

I just want to say that when looking at these lists I tend to disregard any lists that have any albums from the last decade or so, simply because those albums have not had to stand the test of time and hence can not be considered "Best of All Time". Having said that...here are my personal picks:
