Yes, it's me again with another music related post. I thought it would be interesting to know what peoples favorite albums were. There are just a few albums that make you just go wow after listening to them. These are albums you can just sit through from start to finish without doing anything else.

Here are mine:

1. In Rainbows - Radiohead

2. Castaways and Cutouts - The Decemberists

3. Stadium Arcadium - Red Hot Chili Peppers

4. Hail to the Thief - Radiohead

5. Ænima- Tool

So what is your top 5? I know it is really hard coming to just 5.

1. Sound Awake - Karnivool (You Tool fans would probably love this shit)

2. This Is The Warning - Dead Letter Circus

The standard by which I judged my music fucking exploded after these two albums. The Australian rock scene is fucking killing it.

3. Artist In The Ambulance - Thrice

castaway and cutouts is awesome..doesnt fit with the rest of your selection but thats the beauty of it. Hail to the thief is so much better than In rainbows IMO though

1- Beatles - all of it after the teen pop years

2- Refused - The shape of punk to come (i know its a bit high but i feel like its the only one that from my generation)

3- Neil Young - Harvest

4- Bruce Springsteen - Born to run

5- Rites Of Spring - ST

(6) Pearl Jam - Ten.. it should be up there because its the record i listened to the most in my life but i just prefer these other albums.. its really

hard... if you asked my 15 years ago i probably wouldve answered 36th Chambers or Doggystyle, before that it wouldve been And Justice for all.

and i probably wouldve put Hail to the thief somewhere in there if you hadnt. Next year BonIver will probably be old enough to sit in the list with

Can's Tago Mago which i just discovered.

@benspyda:

1. Daft Punk - Discovery

2. The Clash - London Calling

3. The Antlers - Hospice

4. The Velvet Underground - Loaded

5. *TIE* Interpol - Turn On the Bright Lights / The Tough Alliance - A New Chance

Discovery got me into music, and I remember staying up REAL late just to catch the first four videos from it on Toonami; London Calling is my favorite (and the best) rock record ever, and led to an interesting bleached blond haircut during my junior year of high school (wanted to pull off a mix of Paul Simonon and Johnny Rotten); Hospice helped me get over losing my father, and I admired its narrative; Loaded is the album I gave to the first beauty queen-type that I had the courage to ask out; and Turn On the Bright Lights is the album I listened to when I found out she had a boyfriend. Years later, A New Chance is the (perfect) pop record I put on to forget about all of my young adult nonsense -- finishing my degree, the girlfriend, my nine-to-five as a college administrator -- and just drift away to Sweden's (and Eric Berglund's) most blissful place.

This is really hard for me, mostly because I hate eliminating things because many albums are just soo good its hard to choose. I love all types of music! But if you force me to choose, here goes (in no particular order, its hard enough for me to narrow it down this much):

Counting Crows - Recovering the Satellites (A Long December was the first song that ever made me interested in finding out who sung it, and started my love of music. This will always be my favorite band.)

Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

Radiohead - Kid A

The Streets - A Grand Don't Come for Free

Burial - Untrue

Honorable Mentions (I have to, 5 is too few!):

The Rural Alberta Advantage - Hometowns

Daft Punk - Discovery

Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP

Muse - Origin of Symmetry

Outkast - Speakerboxxx/ The Love Below

This would be much easier for me if it was a top 50 of all time list :P

Winnowing down a top 5 is a bit too taxing on my brain at 1:45 am, but my favorite album is Born to Run. The songs are great, and the way they play off each other thematically and tonally over the course of the album is just masterful.

Tie between: (Pronounced 'Leh-'Nerd 'Skin-'ner'd) - Lynyrd Skynyrd and One Cold Night - Seether

Meteora - Linkin Park

Tie between: Fever - Bullet For My Valentine and From Depths of Dreams - Senses fail

Songs for Sanity - John 5

Start Something - Lostprophets

Please note that these tend to change a lot, however these albums were really influential to me as I was growing up, from when I was learning to play the guitar (Songs for Sanity) to coping with my moves from both Utah to South Korea, and from South Korea to Virginia (Start Something), and from my constant travels (From Depths of Dreams).

Led Zeppelin - IV (Zoso)
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
The Beatles - Abbey Road
Bush - Sixteen Stone
Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine

Oh, yeah...Led Zeppelin IV, Dark Side of the Moon and Abbey Road were the soundtracks of my teenage years. When everyone else was listening to Bon Jovi, Poison, Warrant, Mötley Crüe and those other 'guys or girls?' bands, my uncle made damn sure I knew what real music was.

Led Zeppelin IV in particular, I've heard a million times and still love every fucking song on that tape...err..CD...err...the MP3s. Seriously, this was the...tape...we listened to during our D&D games because...it just fit.

I found |\| | |/| early on, before Downward Spiral, and really enjoyed how different it sounded, and the soundscapes were deep (especially Sanctify and Something I Can Never Have).

Bush...after Grunge it was good to hear someone creating deep soundscapes again (listen to Alien...or stuff on their other albums like Greedy Fly, Letting the Cables Sleep, etc.). Sixteen Stone was a breath of fresh air right when I was about to give up on music.

Not my favorite Pink Floyd album but they are pretty close to being on my list. I could argue myself into it because its "better" but I made my list based on what I have listened to the most over the years. I have spun up many bands more often then my cherished Pink Floyd.

Another JA fan! Awesome. Ritual just missed my list, but I gotta say, 'Stop' just so reminds me of that hot August in 1990, skateboarding in the drainage canals and blasting that shit on the boombox (remember those?)

Props.

I'm 35, and I can pretty much look back and say "these albums have been the most influential on my life and my musical tastes". Wasn't difficult at all. If I were younger though, I'm pretty sure I'd come up with a different list each time I was asked.

So the title of this thread should be Your personal top 5 albums not Top 5 Albums of all times. I came in here hoping for a discussion on the top 5 albums that have generated massive influence throughout the years and actually made sure that most of the albums here were even made. Also, not a single mention for Revolver. What a damn shame really.

It's not even their best album IMO, and I'm a huge fan (see the user name). And that opinion has absolutely nothing to do with the fact one of my former roommates played it to death.

@Mordukai: I am extremely disappointed in some of the mentions in this thread over Dark Side of the Moon, Revolver, the minimal appearance of Abbey Road, and the still-not-here The Wall. Even if Revolver isn't on my top 5 list, it should be in here somewhere, dammit! Also, supremely confused at the prevalence of Radiohead, who are quite good but are really not even the best band still putting out records (that honor goes handily to The Black Keys, I believe.) You people really need to learn a lot more about music.

My top 5, for the record. All of these except for * only function to full ability in the album format.

1. Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd

2. Abbey Road, The Beatles

3. The Wall, Pink Floyd

4. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Kanye West

5. Songs in the Key of Life*, Stevie Wonder

The Wall is great, and definitely in my extended list, but not in the top 5. Dark Side of the Moon is just that much better, and there are songs on The Wall I don't really care for ('Run Like Hell' for instance), though 'Comfortably Numb' is far and away my fav PF song. I just don't feel the album as a whole is as strong as DSotM.

And The Black Keys? Pass. If I hear 'Lonely Boy' one more time...

I don't know if I'd put a Modest Mouse album in my top 5 of all time, but if we're talking about albums as a package, We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank (or something like that) flows very well, mostly due to including subdued, quiet riffs from the next track at the end of the previous one. Call it what you want, it works.

1. Embryonic - The Flaming Lips

2. Sams Town - The Killers

3. First Impressions of Earth - The Strokes

4. Primary Colours - The Horrors

5. XX - The XX

Yes I am aware that my albums all come from the last five or so years and also that every band on the list begins with 'The'.

@Fajita_Jim: See, I really like "Lonely Boy", but I haven't heard it really anywhere outside of the album itself. I totally get that The Wall is not in most people's list, but it's kind of disappointing that it's not been mentioned here before now.

According to my current state of mind, the list would probably go

1.Discovery - Daft Punk

2.The Private Press - DJ Shadow

3.Immersion - Pendulum

4.Drink the Sea - The Glitch Mob

5.5 - Lenny Kravitz

No, having that Lenny Kravitz album in the number 5 was not me trying to be clever, that album is seriously got me to start listening to music seriously. Man, am I glad it did too.

I just want to say that when looking at these lists I tend to disregard any lists that have any albums from the last decade or so, simply because those albums have not had to stand the test of time and hence can not be considered "Best of All Time". Having said that...here are my personal picks:

1. The Beatles - Revolver

2. Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde

3. Miles Davis - Bitches Brew

4. The Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street

5. Prince - Sign O The Times
