I am coming to the U S A in the new year and want to know what are the best fast food joints to frequent. In Europe (UK) we only have MAC, BK and KFC.

What part of the USA?  KFC MCds and that garbage can be found anywhere, but the best "fast food" varies by region.

For instance InAndOut burger is one of my favs.  Fresh cut potatoes, fresh cooked beef, and they are NOT A FRANCHISE.  McDs and that bullshit, any asswagon can buy a franchise.  InAndOUt is all owned by the same people, which increases their quality control

Some people like 5guys a lot, I'm not a huge fan but it's pretty better than McDs etc..

SF and LA = inandout
NYC = white castle, although you have to be really drunk to enjoy that slop

If you want to spend money, hit Nobu (gourmet sushi)  in NYC, but be sure to get a reservation.

Boston... I lived in boston 30 years and I'd have to say the seafood is godly, fast food is not anything to speak of.   If you go to boston you have to eat at Giacamo's [sp?] it's one of the few italian places in the north end that draws a line every night, regardless of the weather.  And it's one of the least expensive places in the north end, but holy cow is the food awesome, the only complaint I have is the portions are way too big.  I got lobster w/ fresh made pasta and I could barely eat 1/3 of it (and I am 5'10"  240lbs linebacker type build.

While in the north end be sure to hit Mike's pastry you can't miss either place, they are both within 4 minute walk from each other on the main street there.  They do a great italian capucino w/ a crystal suger stir stick.  Just like giacamos, always crowded at Mikes, and for good reason.

Burger King is the best as far as the franchises go.

You might wanna try Arby's or Taco Bell, those are both pretty unique.

EDIT: Unique to the US, I mean.

Taco Bell
Subway
Chik-fil-A (it's more of a georgia and surrounding states thing)
Arby's

The places you mentioned are really meh imo.  Burger King and Mcdonalds are okay, but highly mediocre.  KFC is awful (although they have good mashed potatoes and macaroni!)
