I really should go back and watch this. I was only three years old when Twin Peaks first aired. I feel as though I missed out on some kind of cultural phenomenon, because everyone on Twitter seems to be going bat shit crazy over the news.

Does the show hold up for someone who has never seen it?

It didn't hold up when it first aired. It's timeless and yet very of it's time.

in other words: YES. the primary strength of 'twin peaks' is the tone and ambiance of the thing- it has such a cohesive and pervasive atmosphere- it's almost suffocating, but in a really fantastic way. take idyllic settings with classic character acting, and then saturate it to high heavens with an oppressive and tangible dread- that's 'twin peaks.'

STOP READING AND GET N 2 IT.

It has about as much chance of success as a modern sequel to The Breakfast Club.

If they bring in a new set of actors and deal with a new story thread while capping off the old in the background, I don't know, maybe. David Lynch is at least good for some weirdness.

I just don't want to sit through some old fucks rehashing old stories and generally just being done, over, and depressing.

The show Psych already did a Twin Peaks reunion and it was way better than the shit-fest that was season two proper. Hopefully with only nine episodes and Lynch in full control this will be better.

I just hope they know what made Twin Peaks good.

I'm optimistic, though. Fargo pulled it off, so why wouldn't Twin Peaks?

I think David Lynch knows what made Twin Peaks good.

I was ecstatic to hear the news today!!!

And my Twin Peaks blu-ray got delivered to my house just a couple days ago too. I watched the series last year and enjoyed it up until that midway point in season 2, then the last episode was great. Super cool show and I'm a huge David Lynch fan

I watched the first two episodes of Twin Peaks ages ago, found it aggressively weird, and didn't watch anymore. Eh, maybe I'll give it another shot one of these days.

I'm excited. My expectations are that it probably won't capture what the original had, but it will still be cool to return to that setting one more time. And Kyle Mclachlan has proven on Portlandia that he is still capable of being very charmingly eccentric.

This will be very interesting. I'm just glad Lynch and Frost are doing it again. It was unique though and I kind of want it to stay there, in its 90s weirdness. A lot's happened since then so we'll see if they can capture that weirdness while still keeping it fresh.

I need to watch Fire Walk with Me again, it's been a while and I've only got it on video. It's about time I had some BOB nightmares again ;)

Wish you were gonna be watching it with us, Ryan!

I just hope we get more of The Elephant Man/Dune/Blue Velvet/Twin Peaks/Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me/Mulholland Drive Lynch than the Inland Empire Lynch. But I have faith and trust in him to do right by his (and Frost's) own story and his considerable directorial skills. I hope we get to see an older, white haired, Gordon Cole!

Recently re-watching the whole thing on the new Blu-ray was a distinct pleasure, they packed a whole bunch of really neat stuff in there. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

"How's Annie?"

This news is surreal. Granted, I watched the show around 2005 or 2006, not 1990-91, but the characters and sequences like the ones in the Black Lodge made it one of the most important film/television experiences of my life. The ending being so f'd up combined with the notion that the story would never go forward made me hella angry back then. It took me some time and knowledge about Lynch after watching his stuff to make me come to terms with it.

I'm sure Lynch would only do this if he has next to free rein to do whatever he feels like, which is the only way I'll take it as well. I'm guessing he'll combine some characters of the original generation with some new teenage ones, specifically a young and beautiful blonde woman, like almost everything he did has.

I only hope we see Cooper again...

@scotchmonkey: As long as James isn't the main character of season 3 I'm good. I liked the end of season 2, but it really dragged in the middle.

Reasons why New Twin Peaks will not end up like season 2 of Old Twin Peaks:

1) It's finite. They're not picking it up as a series and trying to milk it and keep it going forever. It's a limited, 9 episode series, with a clear endpoint. As such, Lynch will know exactly where he's going with all this, which wasn't necessarily true of season 2.

2)Lynch has had 25 years to think of a satisfactory ending.

3)Lynch has the benefit of hindsight, knowing exactly what people did and didn't like about the series.

4)No meddling network. The death knell for the series was the revelation of Laura Palmer's killer. This revelation was brought about by the network's desire for ratings. Again, New Twin Peaks being a limited series, there's no way that Showtime could make demands halfway through the series.

@teaoverlord: I don't think many actors would return or can at this point, I mean ffs its 25 years later like holy shit why is no one saying how bananas this is?! Think about it, your 3rd season is being made 25 years after the 2nd one ended and the show cancelled. this whole thing is nuts!
