I have nothing particularly against needing some form of ID to buy a phone, it would make tracking terrorist activities much easier if they had solid proof of who owns the phone. The problem I have with it is that I don't travel abroad, and therefore I don't have a passport. Passports cost £72. I think you can see where I'm going with this. NOT EVERYONE HAS 72 FUCKING POUNDS TO THROW OUT OF THE WINDOW!!!!!!!! THE GOVERNMENT HAD BETTER PAY FOR A PASSPORT FOR ME IF I'VE GOT TO HAVE ONE TO GET A PHONE!!!!!!!!

The whole point of it is that they have to. You can't get a phone without registering it. I'd guess they've got some technological method of not allowing unregistered phones to make calls, otherwise it is pretty pointless since it'll just lead to a huge black market in mobile phones.

I suspect that other forms of ID (driving liscence etc) will be acceptable.  It may even prevent teens from having 9 of the bastard things which as a tutor, I wholly welcome - just not like this.

Wouldn't the "bad guys" just use payphones then? Or they'd just have "illegal" phones, so only the honest people would be registered.

One city, in a misdirected move on the "war on crime" decided to deactivate all pay phones (you know, so drug dealers can't call to make deals - not like they can't walk or drive wherever), but they all had cell phones anyways, so look who paid the price.

These measures are not necessary in the slightest.

Yet another reason i wish england would calm the fuck down (and the uk in general)  - every day more useless bullshit like this appears that makes living here so damn hard - and none of it makes any damn sense.

These tossers are getting payed more in a week than i do in a year - to fuck up the country - and make it as hard as possible for me to get out of bed and go to work in the morning -good one guys

The Patriot Act is a violation of our constitutional rights, this does not violate any natural rights.
