I'm not quite sure what to make of this
Was Drew actually in North Korea?? If so, I really hope he winds up talking about it on the podcast.

Could have been a border tour, but I thought those had been restricted for the last few years (as far as crossing the border was concerned). That said, it's not unheard of for NK to let people over on propaganda tours, to show outsiders (especially westerners) the "prosperity" of the North Korean country.

Americans though? I'm pretty sure they let Canadians in and they love Russians, but I'm not sure they let in Americans.

It's a hell of a photoshop if it's a joke.

@louiedog: It's definitely North Korea - it's a monument that every foreign tourist has to visit. And that's a relatively recent photo because I believe they didn't add Kim Jong Il to it until after his death.
I recognized the Kim Il Song statue, but haven't seen that since Kim Jong Il's death. I wondered if there was another statue elsewhere.
@Papa_XIV: It's definitely Pyongyang - and they just unveiled the statues earlier this month.
I, too, am completely baffled by this. I'm really interested to hear more about this when he gets back.
EDIT: Apparently it's real. https://twitter.com/#!/drewscanlon/status/194472664323194881

Despite what you all think, considering you don't think for yourselves and are brain-washed by Western Media, North Korea is actually a nice and happy place and going there and experiencing it is no big deal.
Well played, sir.

are you insinuating that Kim Il Sung is anything but our Great Leader?
Just got off the phone with Drew. He's doing great(besides the diarrhea last night). The North Korean Gov't hired him to run their Nationalist Popular Gold Farming Unit(the acronym is really funny in Korean, un-transalate-able in English. Just thought the duders would want to know.
Some of the replies to this are amazing.
Photoshopped. Really? Internet-fueled, photographic hypochondria. Really fascinating phenomena. Even more strange is the fatally misinformed minority that believe you can't go on holiday to North Korea! Why? Do you think you're going to be jailed for being American? Hahaha, i just had to laugh.

Mocking the subjection of an entire population who's living effectively 75+ years in the past isn't funny.

If you say you think North Korea is a "nice and happy place" that makes you look kind of uninformed and pretty ignorant to how the situation actually is over there.

Nobody thought they'd be jailed for being American, but that they'd be denied a travel visa, because that's how it was until recently.
Citizens of South Korea are normally not permitted to visit North Korea. In addition, there have been reports of difficulties regarding Israeli, American, British, and Japanese nationals. In January 2010, North Korea lifted the restrictions on American citizens who are now free to visit at anytime of the year - but they are not allowed to travel by train (especially the train to Beijing) and to participate at homestay-programs.

Totally fits my view of Drew. Doesn't have an off-the-wall personality, but does interesting things.

I heard of American's crossing over on tours, just depends on the mood of the various governments involved and how much you are willing to take the risk. When I went in 2010, things were tenser and the US Army organized tour stopped right at the border, but we were not allowed to cross, or even get off the bus we were on. Just looking across the border is a trip though, the place is a barren wasteland for miles, except for a strangely out of place city with no movement outside of a giant ass flag. Kudos to Drew for rolling the dice, must have been a cool if weird/terrifying experience.
