Director David Yates, who helmed the final four Harry Potter films, is reportedly in final negotiations to direct Universal's Scarface reboot. ..

This will be a straight reboot and not a remake of either the 1932 original film or the 1982 cult classic starring Al Pacino.

Previous reports claimed this film's Tony Montana-type lead would be Mexican and that the story, penned by Donnie Brasco's Paul Attanasio, would revolve around the Mexican drug cartels.

IGN: Harry Potter Director David Yates Up for Scarface Reboot

So..... Drug cartels deaths are pretty awful to hear about. I remember when it was a big thing a couple years ago, and the Mexican Army had to regulate everything for a while.

Anywho. Yea, people are gonna be pretty mad. I think a good story could come out of this, if it didn't have the Scarface name to it. Its whatevs. Apparently they're rebooting 'Scarface' and also 'The Mummy."

They probably should have waited 50 years like they did the first time. Most of us would be getting up there and Al Pacino would either not be available or be much too old to do anything in this movie. And the new generation can have their own Scarface.

I still think the 1982 Scarface is a genuinely bad movie, but if Universal thinks they can make some good money off of the licence, they can have their try.

Universal has been mining their back catalog for remakes for awhile now so why not this one?

You a hasa? . I think Scarface is a MASTERPIECE (Thats Right), but i don't see a reason to get mad about a remake. They should cast Ryan Reynolds in a mustache.

Pacino's Scarface was already just a reimanging of a 1932 movie about an Al Capone stand-in.

I can't wait for the reboot of the Scarface reboot of the Scarface remake

I'm glad The Warriors remake never happened. Replacing all the goofy gangs with bloods and crips was a stupid idea.

I mean I'm not hugely opposed to this news or anything, but it's hard to see how they could build on the original movie in any serious way or even replace Al Pacino, he's so iconic in the original. It's also just kind of dreary to see Hollywood continually fall further down the "Reboot and sequelise things instead of coming up with new ideas" rabbit hole.

@funkasaurasrex: We'll all know whether the reboot made it when millionaire rappers have a $6.99 Special Edition of the DVD on their mantelpiece, giving it pride of place on their 15 minutes of MTV Cribs.

Scarface is far from the untouchable, timeless, classic rappers make it out to be. If they take a "Savages" kind of angle on it they could have a really solid remake on their hands. Or if they went the Traffic route and showed just how futile this entire drug war is. Then again, the '80's Scarface did the exact same thing. Fuck lot of good that did.

Well that's interesting....

Am I the only person here who didn't like the Al Pacino version? I tried watching it a bunch of times but lost interest a quarter of the way through.

I like it. What I never understood was the weird, envious love for the lifestyle Scarface leads harbored by some groups. Sure, there's money, women, and power, but he also self-destructs and ends up losing everything because of his greed and hubris. He's hardly a role-model.

I don't understand why use the title for the movie when it means it will be compared to the other two. Still I don't really care much about the reboot of anything since it will be crappy cash in.

I have to agree with you on this one. If you want to see a good Brian De Palma/Al Pacino gangsterflick watch Carlito's Way. It's way better than Scarface.

Too much Scarface hate in this thread, fuck this shit.

Anyway blah blah blah remakes suck they should stop making them. Oh but Mummy with Channing Tatum, how about that? That'd be okay.

My guess is either good, or bad, or average. I can't pinpoint which one though, but im 99% sure it's one of those 3.

I'm honestly not surprised that Scarface is getting a reboot. What ISN'T getting a reboot these days? Ugh, 2013 has been such a letdown for movies, and I don't see it getting any better in the near future, what with all the reboots, remakes, sequels, and prequels that are happening.

Yeah I heard about this "remake" and I'm not sure what to think of it. Scarface is a classic and one of my favourite movies (mostly cause Al Pacino plays the main role).
