Radiohead is good, but I think Coldplay's music, specifically past X&Y is much more interesting, listenable, and well-written. I do enjoy Radiohead's lyrics a lot but I've found that Coldplay's songs have more power, interesting instrumentation, and good ass melodies than Radiohead's.

What do you think?

#2 Posted by WMWA (1162 posts) -

Whooo shit. This thread should be interesting.

#3 Posted by habster3 (3595 posts) -

I read everything you said, and all I could do was sit there and say to myself, "no" a couple of times. And more interesting? Pfft, to me, Coldplay just sounds like modern, mainstream alternative garbage, while Radiohead put out such classics as OK Computer and The Bends. I know opinions are opinions and all of that, but I just have to strongly disagree on this one

#4 Posted by _Chad (962 posts) -

Unpopular opinion both suck.

#5 Posted by laserbolts (5321 posts) -

I agree with you and i'm not even a huge fan of Coldplay. It's just radiohead are shit imo.

That's why it's my unpopular opinion. I know people hold OK Computer in really high regards, and I do love Radiohead. I'm just saying I enjoy Coldplay more.

But Coldplay only has one song...

#8 Posted by Jay444111 (2441 posts) -

Queen beats both of them combined!

#9 Posted by ArtisanBreads (3833 posts) -

Yeah unpopular opinion with me. Coldplay lost me all together with X&Y and even before that nothing they made was close to Radiohead.

Possibly unpopular Radiohead opinion: Kid A is their best album.

No. Go away.

Well, considering the fact that I have not listened to any song by Radiohead that I am aware of, I will be going with Coldplay. They have several songs that I can put on and listen to all day, like...

  • The Scientist
  • Life in Techincolor ii
  • Lovers in Japan (Osaka Sun Mix)
  • Lost+ (with Jay-Z)
  • Clocks
  • Paradise
  • Violet Hill
  • Speed of Sound

Coldplay is good as pop music, and I never quite understood the appeal of Radiohead, so sure.

#13 Posted by jerseyscum (875 posts) -

It's ok to have your own opinion. Even though it's wrong.

#14 Posted by Dagbiker (6976 posts) -

Oddlly enough I agree.

It doesn't matter. They both suck. WHAM! 4 life.

Yes, and I find it sick, sick, sick (and in the worst way possible).

Whoa slow down buddy, you could have made valid points if you tried. There are TWO very unpopular opinions in there.

Didn't Coldplay copy large parts of a Satriani song?

EDIT: Yep. Parts of this song sound a lot like parts of Viva La Vida. Anyone with an ear can hear that.

Radiohead have the benefit of having a couple of songs I like, versus Coldplay having not a single song I enjoy (nice guys though, so that's something).

In saying that, whiny rock or whatever their genre is rarely appeals to me.

#22 Posted by PeasantAbuse (5138 posts) -

Two of the most boring bands in existence.

#23 Posted by matthias2437 (985 posts) -

I'm sorry my friend but there is a difference between opinions and being wrong. This is a perfect example of that!

#24 Posted by RankRabbit (394 posts) -

Ever see people at a Radiohead concert? They just stand still.

#25 Edited by Animasta (14691 posts) -

At least Radiohead writes their own shitty songs without copying anyone.

also the lotus flower music video is the best music video ever made

#26 Posted by MikkaQ (10288 posts) -

They're both whiny soft-radio-rock bands for grannies anyway. Easy listening for the modern age.

#27 Posted by CrossTheAtlantic (1145 posts) -

I am confused by all the apparent Radiohead hate.

Oh well.

I don';t like radiohead but it's not like their easy listening, especially compared to coldplay.

It's the internet. Maybe every third comment won't be blind hatred.

I just don't find it particularly interesting, like it just feels so soulless to me. It's the kind of music that goes in one ear and out the other. Not offensive but not really present. I'd probably get distracted even if I was at a Radiohead or Coldplay concert.

#31 Posted by joshthebear (2700 posts) -

What the shit? Who in their right minds actually likes Coldplay?

#32 Posted by Dexter_Morgan_ (314 posts) -

No because I love life.

#33 Posted by Deathshroud (359 posts) -

I remember when I was a kid around I think 15 or 16 . When MTV still showed Music videos. They had a " After Dark" Broadcast of videos and I remember watching this :

After that I started to like Radiohead. Not that I did not hear anything else from them before on the radio or even MTV. I guess its when I acknowledged who they were to myself and paid attention.

So with that I have t say I like Radiohead better .. I did kinda grow up with it though so it's kinda a biased opinion.

hmmmm.... one could say many things about Radiohead but soulless is not one that I would expect to hear, even if you don't like them.

#35 Posted by MikeGosot (3227 posts) -

I'll be honest. I like some of the songs from both bands but, they sound the same for me.

#36 Posted by DillonWerner (1528 posts) -

I like Cold Play and Radiohead both, but I like more Cold Play songs than Radiohead songs so I guess I agree with you.

I don't understand it, either. Then again, those I discuss games with tend not to be the people I discuss music with.

@ArtisanBreads: It's all opinions and observation in the end, but Thom Yorke just doesn't come off as particularly genuine to me, that's all. I'm talking pretty much about the modern incarnations of these bands, so maybe in the 90s there was more to it, but I wasn't really listening to anything like that stuff at the time.

oh no I get what you're saying but coldplay sounds way more soulless

#40 Posted by DonChipotle (2750 posts) -

I'd rather listen to Coldplay because Radiohead is the most boring fucking band on the planet.

Yes opinions of course, I just think there is definitely soul and a drive behind Radiohead, although I can understand if some find it too soft, artsy, whiny, etc. York has a vision and they are a pretty unique band. Not as big of a fan of their last couple releases but they've done great work.

Coldplay... I don't feel the same way about that band. X&Y and on I think soulless sounds about right.

#42 Posted by TehFlan (1944 posts) -

Yeah, Cold Play is pretty good.

#43 Posted by MariachiMacabre (7096 posts) -

Led Zeppelin wins by TKO. I'm not a huge fan of Radiohead or Coldplay so I have no dog in this fight.

#44 Posted by davidwitten22 (1708 posts) -

And I like Nine Inch Nails more than both, who cares? Answer: No one. I don't see why people should make new threads every time they have an opinion.

#45 Posted by Deathshroud (359 posts) -

This damn thread has me listening to 90s music now I grew up with . which both brings back memories and ..kinda depresses me lol

#46 Posted by ShadowConqueror (3051 posts) -

I like Coldplay better only because I've never listened to Radiohead, nor do I care to.

#47 Posted by captain_clayman (3321 posts) -

coldplay is ok, i don't hate them. but all of their songs kinda sound like all of their other songs to me.

#48 Posted by iAmJohn (6120 posts) -

Coldplay is the most boring shit imaginable. It's the epitome of modern Dad Rock.

#49 Posted by CaptainCody (1505 posts) -

Radiohead is easily one of the best bands of all time, you people are fucking crazy.

#50 Edited by lord_python (96 posts) -

Please, don't be offended. But those who don't "get" radiohead's music just don't understand more complex and challenging music, stuff that isn't as easily accessible as Cold Play. IMO Cold Play aren't very interesting because they are too poppy and accessible, which is way is less "arty" and sophisticated, but they write music that is very popular and well loved, so in a way they are sophisticated, albeit in a less repectable way IMO. Therefore Radiohead are way more respected in in the music industry and with other artists and musicians. Cold Play's albums have never had the rave reviews that Radiohead have had.

P.S Please don't tell me im trying to be a hipster, I'm not. I actually find Radiohead's music more fun to listen to... after more than 10 listens because it can take that long to appreciate them haha
