Mine is Smuckers strawberry jelly and Jif chunky peanut-butter nestled between two thick pieces of wheat bread. What is your idle PB&J?

Any kind of grape jelly, any kind of creamy peanut butter, spread liberally across two toasted pieces of whole wheat bread.

white bread, a shit ton of creamy peanut butter, and a little bit of grape jelly to make it edible.

As a non-American I find it crazy people would put jam in the same meal as peanut butter.

Then again, maybe some people think sliced banana and peanut butter is gross.. maybe if there was a banana jam?

Grape and creamy is the ONLY way to go.

Peanut butter on one sandwich, jam on another. They don't belong together.

#7 Posted by Hunter5024 (5683 posts) -

@randomhero666: That's just the thing though, it doesn't seem like it would be good, but it really is. Try it!

My ideal peanut butter and jelly sandwich is the one with no jelly.

@hunter5024: I have a jar of nut butter, but no Jam. I'll buy some tomorrow and try it out.
Some gooseberry jam maybe.

*vomits*

Thinking about it, that doesn't seem that bad. I should try it sometime.

I tend to just have a peanut butter sandwich whenever I run out of other stuff (or just feel like having a peanut butter sandwich), and though I do like jam with it, I don't have any specific brand.

...now I really want a peanut butter sandwich, but I just had a ham and cheese one.

#11 Posted by Rick_Fingers (524 posts) -

My ideal peanut butter and "jelly" sandwich is one which does not exist, as they are fucking disgusting and an abomination against the natural order.

...haha nah just kidding. I tried it as a kid when I saw it on Sesame Street and thought it was disgusting, but I imagine it's probably what you are raised with and Aussies don't typically do peanut butter and jam. We tend to eat Vegemite instead, and I know basically everyone but us hates that lovely black spread.

How could anyone possibly be against the pairing of peanut-butter and jelly?

#13 Posted by QWERTZACOATL (2 posts) -

Take three slices of whole wheat bread and make a double decker with grape jelly and creamy peanut butter on one side and Nutella and banana slices on the other, then butter the outside bread and grill that bad boy.

You're welcome.

@capum15: You know what's even better? Cashew Butter with mashed banana

#15 Edited by CircleNine (381 posts) -

Natural (no sugar added) peanut butter to avoid that gross sweet flavor that most peanut butter has and either blackberry preserves or marmalade. Or apple butter in the fall when apples are cheap enough to make it in any real quantities.

The big question is, does anybody else besides me put peanut butter on their pancakes before they pour on the syrup?

#17 Posted by ll_Exile_ll (1702 posts) -

I prefer creamy peanut butter and marshmallow fluff. If there is no fluff on hand, I typically prefer grape jelly. I also don't mind chunky peanut butter if I'm in the right mood.

Chunky PB, Raspberry jam and Old Cheddar... Trust me, treat yourself!

#20 Edited by Butano (1738 posts) -

Super chunky Skippy peanut butter on wheat bread. Usually have just PB by itself with a glass of milk, but I enjoy some grape or strawberry or boysenberry jelly from time to time. Also, PB and banana sammiches are amazing too.

peanut butter and honey.

#22 Posted by Nekroskop (2786 posts) -

Disgusting Americans. Why can't you put brown cheese and marmite on your sandwich like everyone else?

#23 Posted by Sin4profit (2932 posts) -

@hunter5024:

I have a jar of nut butter...

...ew.

Two pieces of buttered white bread, peanut butter and a light spread of grape jelly.

Pro tip: if you butter each slice of bread or put peanut butter on both slices first you don't get that "jelly soak through" sandwich in your lunch bag that when you pull it out all the kids in the cafeteria laugh and you and your childhood is ruined and you grow old, bitter, and socially dysfunctional and when you die the last thing you taste is a haunting flavor of that soggy peanut butter & jelly sandwich.

The more you know.

@sin4profit: I wish my mother did that back when I was a child. :(

I like to take 2 slices of bread, then put some peanut butter and some jelly in between those two slices, and then eat it.

Chunky Peanut Butter with some good ole Strawberry Preserves.

#29 Posted by superkebabi (27 posts) -

@somberowl: You're definitely in Toronto because I've never heard anyone outside the city mention Nuts to You's peanut butter. RIght? Also you should try out their other butters, they're all amazing.

Any brand on home made bread... home made bread changes EVERYTHING. Everyone should have a bread machine.

#32 Posted by Carryboy (676 posts) -

Mine is you remove the jelly, remove the bread and then eat away.

#33 Posted by Tesla (1923 posts) -

Grilled.

This guy knows the score. My favorite is strawberry jam, creamy peanut butter on wheat bread. Then from there you just pretend it's a grilled cheese sandwich with a little bit of butter on each outward facing slice of bread and pan sear for a minute or two on each side.

#34 Posted by YoungFrey (1321 posts) -

A grilled PB&J is truly great. But since I don't want to deal with the mess usually I just toast the bread first. Also I use Nutella instead of jelly. I know it's not the standard, but it's even less healthy if that counts for anything.

Yes! I love putting double peanut butter, too.. Chunky, natural..

#36 Posted by OldGuy (1557 posts) -

If you don't want to grill the sandwich then you spread the peanut butter (chunky, no sugar added, please) on both slices of homemade bread (made by hand, thank you, bread machines are for lazy people who don't care if they don't get consistent results since it doesn't accommodate humid or dry days -- and they make weird square loaves too), thick on one slice and thin on the other. Toast those bad boys up (keeping an eye on them, PB dripped into the bottom of a toaster oven is a baaaaad thing) and then add a good amount of raspberry preserves. Cut diagonally and enjoy with cream of tomato soup, potato chips and Coca-Cola in a glass bottle made with real sugar. Yum.

Peanut butter with bananas is really good.

Peanut butter with butter is really good.

Peanut butter with sugar is really good.

Peanut butter with chocolate syrup is really good.

Peanut Butter with marsh mellow creme is really good.

I don't really eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches much anymore (they're kind of really bad for you and I'm getting old =P ) but there's so many great ways to make them. I guess my preferred classic PB& J is with Goobers (usually strawberry).

I don't like chunky peanut butter- i hate how it cuts up my mouth.

#38 Posted by Hamst3r (4484 posts) -

Chunky Peanut Butter and Strawberry Preserves because it has chunks of fruit.

Sure, the ingredients are pretty much impossible to spread, but whatever.

Sourdough bread

Hold the peanut butter

Hold the jelly

Add salami, lettuce, tomato, onion, avodaco, mayo, mustard, provolone

#41 Posted by EarlessShrimp (1639 posts) -

Man you gotta get smooth peanut butter, get some strawberry jelly, whole wheat bread, mix them shits, stick in oven for 5-10 minutes @ 300 degrees. Eat the shit out of that.

#42 Posted by Ravenlight (8040 posts) -

None, I'm not a child. But pass me the pudding cups anyway.

I have honestly never had peanut butter and jelly.

I've had peanut butter sandwiches and jam sandwiches but never combined.

#44 Posted by ZombiePie (5666 posts) -

All peanut butter and no jelly. I can't stand jelly.

You know, I knew a guy from Sweden, and he had never even heard of PB & J. He thought it was a clothing store or something at first.

Anyway, peanut butter on one slice, jelly (or jam!) on the other. Some people put a bit of both or (god forbid) butter in there and that kind of behavior is intolerable as far as I'm concerned.

#46 Edited by FunkasaurasRex (847 posts) -

I can't remember the last time I had a PB&J sandwich. I sometimes have toast in the morning, but I use almond butter because I'm a fruity city-dwelling liberal pescetarian.

#47 Posted by Andorski (5310 posts) -

Grape jelly, creamy peanut butter, and white bread NO CRUST.

Fuck crust.

#48 Edited by egg (1467 posts) -

I prefer one that is dry, very dry with Apricot preserves (very small amount) and tons of peanut butter on a stale bagel, lightly toasted.

Ideally, when you bite into it, all the peanut butter should push out the other side of the bagel and it should get all over your fingers.

#49 Posted by MonkeyKing1969 (2775 posts) -

Thick sliced 'country' white bread, some nice grape preserve, and creamy and/or natural peanut butter. If possible use Jelly with less sugar and peanut butter without ANY sugar. Sugary jelly and peanut butter is bad for you, and fake sweetener is even worse.

The only side dish for a PB&J is fruit. Either a whole natural pieces of fruit, or a decent cup of applesauce.

#50 Posted by Basm321 (194 posts) -

The jam (NOT JELLY!) choice is always a difficult one, but I would have to say a good blackberry jam or preferably a blackberry preserve. Then some crunchy peanut button on toasted sourdough bread. I prefer a more jam than peanut butter in my sandwich.
