What qualifies as a "personal item"?

I'm going to be flying back home to California next week and I need to bring as much stuff as possible. The airline that I'm going with (US Airways) says that they allow for one carry-on and one personal item. I've had a hard time looking up what exactly can count for that so I was wondering if anybody here might know the answer and also what have you gotten away going in the plane with that falls under personal item?

Something like an Ipod or cellphone, maybe a tablet, I think. Or a teddy bear.

Personal Items are usaly like a Handbag. or a Laptop bag.

"Personal Item" generally means a purse or laptop sized bag. Many people basically use it as a second small carry-on these days because, yo, fuck bag fees.

Right I've seen that on mulitiple sources bing able to bring a purse but I've also been reading people bringing backpacks and things of that nature.

Basically, anything that can fit under the seat in front of you. About the size of a breadbox. Laptop bag, backpack, small dog carrying case, toddler. Shit like that.

Personal item would be anything you'd prefer to keep on your person (as opposed to checking with your luggage or stowing in the overhead compartments). So pretty much what everyone said here. It'll contain things like asthma medication, entertainment (magazines, gameboys, kindles), laptops, snacks, and bottled water (purchased after the security check of course, you terrorist).

If it will fit under the seat in front of you, it counts. A reasonably-sized backpack is fine.

Well, it's gotta fit in your anus. With some exercises, you could probably bring a pretty decently-sized bottle.

@Oscar__Explosion: A smaller carrying case, usually. Think briefcase, handbag, laptop case, etc.

I think they basically mean "a purse." Or maybe a fanny-pack if you're into rocking one of those.

I call any handheld Nintendo puts out a Gameboy. The last one was the Gameboy DS, the new one is the Gameboy 3D. It just makes more sense than all of these silly meaningless acronyms that don't even spell anything. Don't sass me, whippersnapper.

I have used a backpack as a personal item multiple times. As long as it fits under the seat, no one gives a fuck.

Rolling suitcase and a backpack. That is the way to go.

I usually carry on my backpack that's pretty much filled to the brim with stuff (to the point where it looks like it'll burst) and I've never had any issues. I can even get it to fit in the overhead compartment (sometimes at least.)

Carry-on is what you can fit in the overhead compartments. Personal item is what you can fit under the seat in front of you. I tend to go with a backpack that may contain any of the following: laptop, handheld game system(s), kindle/books, tablet.
