depends on the age of the child i guess. but all 6 of of my nephews and nieces who are between the ages of 5 to 9 are crying out for ipads this christmas. they won't be getting one, but thats what they want.

#6 Edited by MentalDisruption (1669 posts) -

Games console I suppose. I was always happy to get some kind of new gaming console as a kid. Hell, I'm 19 and I'd still be much happier getting a console instead of an ipad. Granted I didn't grow up with ipads being everywhere, so I don't know what kind of obsessions a kid might have with those.

#7 Posted by JTB123 (1044 posts) -

Would depend on the kid of course, but I can't imagine they would get more use out of an ipad than they would a 360 or PS3.

I dunno. A fucking trainset? A stuffed bear? Some sweet micro machines? An action man perhaps?

You should treat kids as kids and not as tiny adults.

Should be 'An iPad'.

#12 Posted by Wondeboy (38 posts) -

complete subjective based on the child. current experience of my friends children is that they'd go absolutely nuts for an ipad.... either way they should be happy (unless you're talking about those modern ungrateful "why didnt you get me both" kind of kids!!)

So I asked a bunch of children at my work, there about 4 ish, most of them when asked either wanted a "Nintendo" or an iPad.

If you're a parent, the games console with a games bundle, should be about £200 and that's their main present that can be shared with the family. If you're a relative, family friend, A game, ONE, SINGULAR. No kids should have iPhones/iPad's solely to themselves. It's cringe enough when Michael Patcher spouts getting his kids iPhones for Christmas on Bonus Round so unashamedly casual 'Yes, I just dropped £400 on a child.' What are you setting these kid's future expectations to be? A Car? Where do you go from there? We already have enough spoilt 'wheres whats owed to ME' kids in this world. Don't encourage this and don't be that guy. If you have disposable income , which from the many posts I gather you do, the best thing you can do is save it. It's boring but think about the future and getting out of your parents house, renting a flat, in the long run even getting a mortgage on a house. Don't waste it like this. /Rant

I'm 23 and I have no use for an iPad. I simply cannot see what a child would do with one.

You can spend, what? Like £30 on a 4 year old for christmas and they'll have a wonderful time with the bubble wrap and box that whatever you got them came in.

Fucking madness.

A child would like an Ipad most of all it seems and I happen to agree with that finding. For children, it's not just about the toy's usefulness but the ability to brag about it when Christmas vacation is over. Ipads are chic and even a bit "grown-up". That appeals to a younger mind.

I personally would prefer an Android based tablet, but I'm far removed from my childhood.

@RazielCuts Lol how did this change to me saving money, which by the way, £300 goes in every month.

Any kid who says he/she wants an iPad only wants one because they see them on TV and see people advertising them, all of that. The child in question will most likely pick it up, play with for maybe a half an hour, then drop it and go do something else. Games consoles, on the other hand, would get more use and would ultimately make the child happier unless the kid in question has a need to get on the internet and check his email, forums, and bank account on a whim, then go download a new novel on Kindle to read on the way to work.

Depends on the age and whether they've played videogames, I guess. I would say an iPad if all things are equal.

#29 Posted by RazielCuts (2986 posts) -

@Hizang: Well from the 'what would a child be happier with' title it sounded like you were wondering what to buy a child for Christmas and if you were even considering dropping £400 on a child (that might seem crazy but for you I don't think its too far fetched :P) then I'd say you're weren't managing your money very well. But as you've said its what the kids were saying at work then I have to agree with @believer258 It's the shiny thing they see on TV everywhere, the swiss army knife that can do everything. Draw, Play, Watch. I don't see many other kid's having one though (hopefully) so I can't see any peer pressure being involved so if they don't get one. It's worrying kids of 4 are thinking of iPad as a normal thing to ask for though.

If it's just to keep them entertained, I assume there are much better options than an $800 device. A shitty device, if you ask me.

I dont know about modern kids, but when I was a kid getting a video game console was the coolest thing ever. Shame mine were always hand me downs, but we were poor. I was lucky to get video games at all and (ha) thankful for it.

When visiting relatives in Ireland I noticed some of the young kids (ranging from 3 to 6 year olds) playing with the parent's iPhone and iPad and they were actually using the internet like Safari and shit. I saw a three year old navigate to Safari and look up info about some kid's show on fucking Google. A lot of people don't give young kids credit on being able to understand what the hell they are doing with those devices. On the games side of things the simpler games like fruit ninja kept the younger kids more occupied than the older ones.

Personally I wouldn't want to give very young kids those kinds of devices because I prefer they invest their time into some more physical oriented activities and throwing them a smartphone or tablet is a lazy method of keeping the kid busy but I can't deny the eventuality that because these kids have been around those things at such a young age that they will also have an easy time at adapting with newer future devices so our generation will turn into the old people who are too lazy/confused to bother adapting to newer technology.

What do kids need an iPad for anyway, to check their Fisher Price stocks?

Consoles have multiplayer which is probably better for a child than growing up with an iPad who will probably develop introverted tendencies as a result.
