I'm a socialist, believe that we should  have both private and government ran bizness's, I raugher spend money helping our people instead of Iraq and unlike most liberals, I believe we should use our resources though planning a responsibility, use them but not to the point of abuse, I also believe we should take the IRS away and just pay a fair tax meaning a sale taxes of 25 cents per dollar and 5% should go to univerisal heathcare and another 5% to Social Security and the rest for whatever, I dont like the republicans or the democrats, theres only lil difference between them

Fair tax is incredibly stupid. It exponentially punishes the lower-income citizens. I'm fine with you having your beliefs, and share some of them, but do you actually *know* what you're talking about, instead of just saying what you think based on what you've heard?

Most self-described "socialists" that I know are only in it for the Che Guevara shirts, are still going to college (most being under 21) and have never held a full-time job.  Does that about sum it up?

Probably none of the above, because I don't pay too much attention to politics, not just yet, anyways. I won't be voting in a presidential election in another 4 years, anyway. I'll be 19 when the 2012 Election comes around.

And you honestly think it's feasible for anybody (especially those supporting a family) to bear the brunt of a "fair tax"?

What's the political word for not caring? I don't vote and never will because I don't think it matters who the President is, the government will do what they want, whenever they want, in my opinion.

Socialism, much like communism, looks good on paper.. But for a country founded on the whole "freedom" and "rights" thing, it will never work. Socialism is unconstitutional.

Not everyone who fits those stereotypes is a fake socialist who is going to drop it as soon as they get a job. I consider myself a socialist, and I fit all those stereotypes (although the Che Guevara shirt was a gift and I've only worn it a couple of times), yet I genuinely believe in socialism and come from a family that also supports it. I've learned about socialism from my grandfather and uncle who have both been supporters of it all their lives. I'm not just jumping on the bandwagon to be trendy, I've been taught about it and I genuinely support it.

Middle-Left wing, which would be relatively far left in the US. Germany is a social democracy, which I am extremely happy with. As far as I understand it, it is the one thing many democrats dream of and most republicans claim to be impossible. I consider the heads of our state and their ways of thinking as too conservative, but they too would count as "liberal" from an american point of view - If I lived in the US, I would be a registered and active democrat.

I also despise Hippies and do-gooders.

This, though I do live in the U.S., I am registered as a democrat, and I agree with a lot of socialist policies (not all, a number of them, however).

Not voting isn't an opinion. It's just not smart. If you don't vote then you can't complain when it's bad, like now."
How I feel about the government is an opinion which leads me to not vote. Who says I can't complain just because I don't vote? That logic doesn't make much sense. If someone votes for someone and they turn out to be a crap president, they don't have the right to complain because they voted for them. I have the right to complain all I want because I didn't vote. I don't need to vote to back up my opinion that the government will do what they want, no matter who the president is.

I'm so happy that you're initial post was poorly written.

What we need is a moratorium on the income tax, and we need to replace it with a national sales tax on luxury items. Tax cars, bikes, video games and so forth. Along with that, tax any form of internet commerce, be it Ebay or world of warcraft. Kill all sales taxes on food and clothing, the necessities of life.
Of course, I hate socialism. Public health care is an admirable idea, but we shouldn't be trying to obtain it with a horribly unbalanced budget, and the prospects that Medicare, medicaid, and SS will take up 75% of the budget in a few decades.
Also, how can you call yourself a socialist and not know Che? How did you graduate from high school, and not know Che?

Marxist-Leninist.

And for the record, I've never owned a Che Guevara shirt. I do have a Marx/Engels '08 one around here, as well as a Lenin one somewhere. But they were both made for me by a friend.

Here is an example: Lets say you lose 20% of income to taxes. Now, if everyone loses 20%, then it is fair. Your math is incorrect in saying that someone who has to contribute 15% is equal to someone who has to contribute the full 20%.

Most of them have no idea who he is, or that he is honored in Cuba just about every day, despite that Fidel Castro spent the last years of Che's life trying to minimize his role in the governement bcause he did a terrible job.

Wouldn't universal health care remove the need for medicare and medicaid?

I see no conflict with socialism and democracy. Flat taxes are great...if you're rich. If you're poor (or middle class) you'd suffer from it. It might be 'fair' in terms of percentages, but not in terms of impacts. Removing 10% of Bill Gate's income would have a lot less impact on his household than 10% of mine (even the the $ ammount from him would exceed my total income).

Since several people said they are libertarians someone please explain this to me:
How does everything get paid for? As I understand it Libertarians are against taxes..so how do public works (bridges, roads, schools, etc) get paid for?
