Paranormal Activity was good in my book, though some of my friends called it "boring and retarded."
The Devil's Rejects is underrated and you might like it.  This is the a movie where Rob Zombie proved he could direct.  Of course he then went on to direct more movies blowing that theory out of the water.

Are you looking for a movie with good horror, or a horror movie that's a good movie?

If it's the former, The Grudge scared the shit out of me. Horror movies generally don't scare me, but man, that Japanese kid...

If it's the latter, Dawn of the Dead, Alien and the first Saw are pretty great.

THANK YOU!!! This guy has the right idea! TCM 03 topped the original, and then some. As for others? Well the recent Nightmare on Elm Street re-make was great in my opinion. If you don't want a slasher movie than may I suggest Paranormal Activity as others have, along with the Spanish film [REC], and The Descent. The Descent is fucking awesome. Criminally overlooked film.

The original Nightmare on Elm Street which is still a really scary film today, the sequels eventually turn silly but the first one is alot more serious as the others turn more to slapstick comedy and one liners.
Both Dawn of the dead and the remake of it are really awesome movies with great action and horror scenes.

The Eye is supposedly scary, but I'm yet to watch it so can't fully recommend it.

IMDB have their own list, but I'm not too sure about it:
http://www.imdb.com/chart/horror
It has got The Shining listed though, and I thought that was an awesome film.

Go for 28 Days Later rather than 28 Weeks Later. It is the prequel and IMO superior in every way. That and the original Alien are my favourite horror movies.

There ain't no good horror movies. Except Evil Dead of course, if that can even qualify as a horror film.

Well, there are the 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later movies. I guess they are horror movies but I don't really look at them that way. Anyways, those are good.

If you asked me, and I was in the right mood, I'd tell you that the original Last House on the Left is the best horror movie.

I wouldn't call it scary (although it is), but it's horror, through and through. It's not bumps in your closet at night, but it doesn't fuck around, either.

If it makes it any more appealing, the original time I tried to watch the movie, I became too uncomfortable and had to shot it off, an hour in.

Seconding The Decent.
Hatchet - More of a horror comedy but I enjoyed it.
House of the Devil - Slow but worth the wait.
Cabin Fever 2 - I only recommend this movie if you aren't squeamish and liked the first one.
Wrong Turn 2 - Not the greatest horror movie but it is worth it just to see Henry Rollins kick mutant hillbilly ass.
The Devils Rejects - The best movie Rob Zombie ever did is not that much of a compliment but it captures the 70's exploitation vibe perfectly
Trick r' Treat - Quite possible the best Made for DVD movie ever released.

Actually I took my cousin and as a straight dude who had previously never seen the show or the first movie I have no problem admitting I didn't hate the movie and there were some laughs to be had from it. In saying that though I wouldn't recommend it, it's definitely view only with your lady or female family I guess but I wouldn't hate on it too much. The Thing always gets a lot of love around these parts and for good reason. You should watch that among many other great horror flicks.

Saw (it's better than people assume, trust me)
Dead Space (oh wait that;s a video game)
Quarantine (is prolly the closest thing to a realistic zombie movie that will ever exist)
The Ring (is one of this decades greatest movies)
Brokeback Mountain (I was screaming in terror the whole time)

Quarantine is [REC] but in english.  Don't recommend [REC] unless you want the person to suffer from translation frustration
