When you buy a new loaf of bread, do you throw away the heel?

we don't throw it away at the start but we do just leave it in until all the bread is gone and THEN throw it away... it's so dumb.
Same. Although sometimes Mother will use the heel for something (e.g. soup) if there's no good bread left, but I can't be doing with it. 99% of the time it gets thrown away when the bag does.

This is what I do as well. I think I've tricked myself into thinking the heel keeps the bread from going stale as quickly due to air exposure. That's almost definitely nonsense science, though.
The ends of bread are disgusting.
But they're useful for keeping the rest of the bread fresh. I use them as buffers then throw them out with the otherwise empty bag.
This is the way to go.I keep it to help maintain the freshness of the inner pieces, then throw it out at the end.
No i don't throw it away but i rarely eat it myself unless im desperate for toast. Not sure if you guys would be familiar with a Nutty Krust, i cant explain it any other way since we know the type of bread collectively as Nutty Krust even though its a brand name similar to Xerox machines in that regard, its a plain loaf and the first thing i do when i get it is eat the both crusts since thats the best part.
Googled it, its called a Batch Bread, though apparently the nutty Krust differs in some ingredients.
Same here. I don't mind bread crust but I certainly don't want an entire slice of just that. No way would I ever use the heel to make a sandwich or anything.I keep it to help maintain the freshness of the inner pieces, then throw it out at the end.
I do hate how the first piece after the heel is almost always kind of hard, too. I don't throw that away but I don't usually use it until I have no choice.

I don't throw it away because I'm not wasteful. It's just as good as the other slices. I don't really get people that throw it away or don't want it.
Oh, come on. You can buy a loaf of white bread for, like, a buck in most grocery stores. Throwing away the two end pieces is not particularly wasteful.
I was going to ask if you lot who throw away this piece of perfectly fine (and in the case of a oven-fresh bread, the best piece) also throw away the first slice of a block of cheese, but then I realised that cheese slicers are not that common in certain parts of the world. If there is something more infuriating than watching people throw away good bread, it is watching people throw away some damn fine cheese.
Everyone I know has always called it "ends". But no, why the fuck would I do that. It's still bread.
If you do, you're a goddamn moron. PM me; I'll send you my address so you can send it to me rather than dispose of that precious piece of heaven.
I can understand throwing out the end of an American pullman loaf, which I guess most of the people in this thread associate with the word bread, because the crust on those is at best completely unremarkable. French bread on the other hand...those chewy heels caused many a fight between my siblings and me.
