Where can I buy a hidden spy camera?

I think someone that I live with may be coming into my room when I'm not around and snooping through my stuff. So I want to set up a small hidden camera in my room to record while I'm out to see if I can catch them in the act, or hopefully put my mind at ease and have it turn out to just be paranoia on my part.

I have been searching on google for a while now, but every site I can find looks kind of sketchy, and the few that don't are asking for like $200-$500 for these things. I was wondering if anyone on here might know of a good site that has something I can buy for around $20-$40 and won't cost an arm and a leg to ship to Canada.

Wait, can you explain further -- What makes you think that someone's snooping through your stuff; can you confirm that things have been moved around/tampered with before you start buying cameras? Could you even talk to this person first?

#3 Posted by StrainedEyes (864 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

Just remember, after you hide the camera in her room you need to stay cool about it. Don't keep saying things like "hey, maybe you should go change" because she'll start getting suspicious.

Here is a teddy bear surveillance camera for a bit over $100. The website is called Stun Gun Mikes, which sounds super legitimate.

Although, before you throw down $100+ for a secret camera, maybe you should just confront this person.

@BeachThunder: I don't have a place to keep my clothes, so they tend to sit on the floor in piles. I have noticed on several occasions coming back to discover certain ones out of place, and more notably there have been several times that I have left my computer on/off only to come back and find it in the opposite state. I can't talk to them about it because I think the person doing it is a kid, and because of weird family dynamics no one would believe me short of showing them a video of the person being caught red handed doing it. And even then they would probably say I did some computer voodoo to make it look like them.

Nothing that I can tell has gone missing, but I think they are snooping around and trying to find stuff that they think is in my room. What they think that stuff is I couldn't tell ya.

"writes in note pad" Don't hint to get naked.  Will arouse suspicion.

Got it. Thanks!

Well if it is a hidden spy camera, It might be hard to purchase..because..you know...it's hidden...and you can't buy it unless you find it..

@crusader8463:  If it's in your room, then do this: Place a small piece of paper below the bottom hinge on your door and close it into place. That way, if someone opens it, it will fall and you will have proof someone has been in your room.

Yeah do something like this.  There are cheaper ways of knowing if someone is going through your stuff than buying a camera.

Well, I do live near a spy shop that sells that kind of stuff.  Looking around online is usually the best way to go about it.  You can also get wall-mounted cameras at Tiger Direct.

@Landon: @PeasantAbuse: Already tried that that trick, but it didn't work because they saw me do it so now they know to look for it.

@YukoAsho: Those things cost way too much, and I would rather catch them in the act then scare them off with a big camera mounted to the wall.

Do you have a digital camera? Take pictures of all your stuff in your room before you leave. When people mess with other people's stuff, they never put it back quite the way it was before.

What kind of stuff do you think they're getting into, and what are they looking for?

Living with someone already sucks, but living with someone you don't trust would be a nightmare for me. Luckily, I live alone.

you could stack some colored balls in an order only you know, and put them inside an open container. They knock them down and rearrange them incorrectly

Well, spy cams are always going to cost more money.

That said, this is pretty dope.  Tiny as shit, not hard to hide.  This here place has tons of crazy shit like this.  Spy pens, alarm clocks, you name it.

Why does it have to be hidden? A camera randomly sitting in your room that doesn't have a red recording light should do just fine, just put it somewhere that looks like it is being stored there.

Maybe lay it on top of a pile of dirty clothes so it looks like you just threw it on the ground, i don't understand why you have you over-complicate it...

How do you expect to hide a spy camera undetected if you can't even do that without anyone noticing?

Leave your smartphone plugged into the power supply, angle it so it watches the room, witness your dastardly infiltrator being dastardly.

#24 Posted by Phr4nk0 (302 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

Like people have said there are far easier ways to tell if someone is in your room, just place two or three inconspicuous items in the way of what you're thinking they're snooping around on. If it's your computer, an open text book or something covering mouse and keyboard, make a note of the page number and put it upside down with a corner touching a certain key, glass or bottle of something in the vacinity of mouse movement. Then place something hard, small and irregular on your chair, also make a note of its orientation so you can tell if it's been moved.

Bond...James Bond. Just hide your cellphone somewhere and use its camera to do the spy work.

Since you already tried the paper on the hinge approach, then the next best thing up is to simply take three or four things from your room and stack them up just behind your door when you're closing it. That way, if somebody opens your door and knocks them over, then you know somethings up. Unless they can somehow see through wood, they shouldn't be able to see the order you stacked the things, so there's no way they can recreate it again.

Or like, get a lock for your door. But then again, elaborate spy traps are more fun.

This. Couldn't you just turn the webcam on your laptop/desktop on and record via that in a hidden window?

I'm shocked nobody mentioned Dealextreme yet. They have a entire directory for dirt cheap spy cams. Camera's hidden in stuffed animals, alarm clocks, pens, lighters or whatever, and they cost almost nothing.

It might take a week to ship, but it's really pretty amazing, just look at that thing, for 12$, how could you go wrong?

Don't look for "spy cameras" or anything like that, search "micro camera".  I found this wireless surveillance camera kit for $26.00 at geeks.com

This. Or just put a small bit of clear tape over the join between the top of the door and frame.

Start covering all your room in feces and then they won't want to touch anything.

Or put thumbtacks on the floor, or have a bucket of paint attached to a rope tied onto the door handle.

Basically you need to recreate Home Alone.

I think you should focus more on cleaning up those piles of clothes, you dirty ape.

#36 Posted by Finstern (609 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

just leave your computer on with a webcam and a piece of software set to take a picture when it detects motion (you can find these for free and they work) then when the door opens, regardless of how hidden the camera is you will have evidence of them entering your room.

#37 Posted by Sogeman (816 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

If paper didn't work, use single strands of hair and put them in drawers. Maybe put paper in them too so they think you use paper but instead it's the hair that will doom them. Also like Finstern said, just use a webcam and a recording program. Just search for one you can hide in the taskbar or just set up a stream and watch it. That way, even if the person finds that you're recording it's already too late. It will be archived on jtv for example and save from deletion.

PS: don't make deathtraps with knifes and shit and if you do, get an alibi.

I was thinking maybe they were looking for truffles in the depths of the piles. Those things sell for a lot of money.

I just got one of these in the mail. There are quite a few different models available, but they're collectively known as the 808 car keys micro camera. It looks like a car door remote. Since you live with the person it probably won't fool them into thinking it's part of your keys, but it's small enough to hide without being seen. You could even tape it under a desk or shelf if you're more worried about capturing someone's presence than recording exactly what they are doing. You can either attach it to your computer and use any webcam recording software or you can put a microSD card in it and capture a few hours of video that way.

I'm not joking when I say it's small. It's smaller than a lot of actual car remotes that I've used. They even make HD models that do 720p video. Some people attach them to helmets and use them for video where they might be in harms way because they are so cheap.

The way the house is laid out my room is at the end of a hallway and they walked out of the bathroom just as I was doing it. Didn't know they were in there or I would have waited. If I were to hide a camera I could close my door and hide it so they wouldn't know where it was.

Thanks,I will give those sites a try. I figured it was just a matter of not searching for the right keywords, but for the life of me I couldn't think of what to type. Was kind of annoyed last night when I started looking. So I wasn't thinking too well.

I'm an only child. The offspring of the whore my father married keeps sneaking in my room for some reason that I can not for the life of me figure out, and snooping around my stuff. Nothing is being take, just mauled over and put back. My father never takes sides and just walks away any time something happens, so that just leaves the whore wife and she see's the kid as an angel that can do no wrong so nothing short of showing her a video of the kid doing it would make her believe. Even then I'm sure she will find some excuse to say it's my fault.
