Where would we be without Bill Gates?

What do you guys think what would have happened if we didnt have Bill Gates?

Some of you may say that someone else would have created what he created probably a little more in the future.  But if you dont think of it that way, what do you think would happen?

This is really random, but I was just thinking to myself. o_O

I suppose the simple answer would be that the Apple company would be a lot bigger today, and we would never have the Xbox. Of course, the Mac would have also developed into a huge gaming platform, and perhaps Steve Jobs would have authorized a new console based on Mac aesthetics and such.

We would sill be using command line prompts.

Apple would be bigger, and the iPod would be a handheld game platform.

DOS probably never would have existed, right?  It wasn't all Bill's work, but he made it what it was.  Windows was mostly a Xerox project as well.

Maybe there'd still be competition between Apple. Amiga and others.  3d graphics would have progressed differently because of no DirectX influence.  The internet would have progressed differently, even standards such as HTML would have been vastly different.

We would have a different but most likely, equally good representation of what we have now.  There is always someone else who steps in to fill a void.

We'd all be the cool Mac guy, duh.

We'd have Macs at school instead of PC's, which would actually be better.

Maybe Mac would have been the strongest around, maybe they wouldn't have, maybe someone else would have rose up with similar ideas that he/she now left as things Microsoft already did.

Apple would do their mac thing and Linux would dominate PC's.

We would probably live in a utopian society with no war, racism or godawful "I'm a Mac" commercials.

My take on it is that if Bill Gates and Microsoft never existed then Apple and Linux would be the two big boys in the market. Also Linux would have changed from a mostly command line OS to the more user friendly GUI interface. That all depends of course if Steve Jobs would have returned to Apple as he did. If he did not returned to Apple and did not integrate NeXT Software, Inc. into Apple then OPENSTEP for Mach and Linux would have been the dominant OS's. 

Maybe there is an alternate reality where Bill Gates doesn't exist. I must look further into this.

For one, we would all be running linux and shitty macs.

Apple would be huge!

Things would be roughly the same--but with different names. Gates was only one man, and in the course of his career, he supplanted others who might have done as well or better, but who were not as business savvy. His technological contribution was significant--but not unique. He rode the crest of a technological wave, but was only one of it's many creators.

there would be another guy running windows. it is said that bill gates stole somebody's idea for windows. he took the idea and made it happen while the poor guy didn't get any of the money.

i would say there would be macs and some other operating system. maybe macs would be more standard then what they are.

You've got your wires crossed abit. Apple stole from Xerox then Microsoft stole form Apple ( remember Bill Gates worked for Apple). DOS did exist before MSDOS, it was called QDOS and Bill Gates bought it for 2000 dollars.
