For someone in his early 20s. After avoiding it for a while, I was pleasantly surprised by the first avatar show (Korra has only been okay for now), definitely one of if not the best animated show I've seen, but I'm not necessarily looking for something exactly like that. In fact, I'm not looking for anything in particular, just something that seems worthwhile and is preferably still airing. I heard a lot about adventure time, but I dunno.

Stuff I've watched that has been mentioned in this thread (though I don't necessarily remember some of these too well):

  • Pokemon
  • Batman The Animated Series
  • Batman Beyond
  • Beast Wars
  • Kim Possible
  • Danny Phantom
  • Archer
  • Teen Titans
  • Animaniacs
  • Futurama
  • Powerpuff Girls
  • Spiderman Animated Series
  • X-men Animated Series
  • Dexter's Lab
  • Cow & Chicken
  • Kids Next Door
  • Inspector Gadget
  • Fullmetal Alchemist (vanilla and brotherhood)
  • Spongebob Squarepants
  • ReBoot
  • The Simpsons
  • Hey Arnold
  • Johnny Bravo
  • Samurai Champloo
  • Gargoyles
  • Looney Tunes
  • Ren & Stimpy
  • Magic School Bus
  • Fairly Odd Parents

Pokemon Season 1 (82 episodes)

Batman Animated Series (Early 90s one)

Transformers and GI Joe Original Series (Never watched but I trust the GB crew and got them to watch with my son when he is a little older)

A lot of the DC stuff from the late 90's, early 2000's like Batman Beyond, and Justice League Unlimited are really good.

Same with Batman.

Never liked Transformers and I watched a bit of GI Joe on youtube. It sucked, real bad (no offense to those who liked it).

Also, I'm not really looking for cartoons aimed only at children. Avatar had a lot of great work in the character department. They did emotions, tension and stress really well.

Also Also, I accidentally flagged your post (woops).

I like 'The Regular Show' more than 'Adventure Time.'

  • Beast Wars
  • Rocko's Modern Life
  • Aqua Teen Hunger Force
  • Beavis and Butthead

Johnny Chimpo, which isn't real..

cartoons, huh? here's the best of the mid 2000's:

Kim Possible is really good (even if the 4th season was kinda phoned in, the two movies are excellent)

Courage the Cowardly dog is great if you like horror stuff. (themaningauzethemaningauze KING RAMSEEEEEEEES).

Danny Phantom is underrated but really good (The Ultimate Enemy is so good, and so is Reality Trip)

most of these you can find on youtube actually! I know there are scattered KP episodes and Courage ones at least.

In terms of comedy, The Venture Bros just finished its most recent season this week, and it's a pretty great cartoon series aimed at adults parodying a lot of the theatrics and dumbness of Hanna Barbara/GI Joe style franchises of the past few decades.

I don't know you're stance on anime, but Death Note is really fantastic. I enjoyed it a lot even though I don't watch a lot of anime.

Adventure Time is one of the funniest and most creative kid's shows right now. Underneath its wacky exterior lies a very story universe.

American Dad! is also a very funny show, even if it does look like another version of Family Guy.

This is wisdom. For something more modern there is always Adventure Time if you want something silly and Phineas and Ferb if you want something...less silly?

I respectfully disagree with these being aimed at children (the shows I've seen). Going back and watching them is a lot more serious than I ever would've thought, sexual innuendos, humor on a higher level than I realized. And I want to watch Transformers and GI Joe is because they sound like they are terribly good, kinda why I want to watch the LoZ season and Mario Bros. Show that are supposed to be fucking garbage, but not for everyone.

But a current show I have watched from time to time is Amazing World of Gumball, just really enjoyed what I've seen

Justice League and Justice League Unlimited (Batman TAS, Batman Beyond, Super TAS and these shows are all connected and form one big story)

Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes

Avatar: The Last Airbender

Legend of Korra

Batman Brave and the Bold(Just accept that it's not the animated series. It's not trying to be. It's a love letter to Silver Age goofy ass comics. It's hilarious)

Tron Uprising (if you like Batman Beyond this is right up your alley)

Chowder

I think Regular Show is way more entertaining for an adult than it is for kids. There aren't really "adult" references (well, there kind of are), but just a bunch of things that kids won't have context for. Every time licensed music comes on in an episode, no kid will get it.

Plus that show gets really weird every now and again

Adventure Time is great, that and Regular Show convinced me Cartoon Network is still great.

You really can't go wrong with 90's Nick stuff, especially Rocko's Modern Life.

Futurama is my favorite show of all time, so of course I'm gonna recommend that. (Seasons 1-4, everything after that is okay too but they focus too much on Fry and Leela)

King of the Hill is one of the most brilliant shows I have ever seen. It's incredibly funny if you can understand the humor and even if you don't it's still a great animated sitcom.

Old CN shows like Dexter's Lab, Powerpuff Girls, (don't hate) Courage, and Billy and Mandy hold up nicely.

cn put a bunch of it's shit on netflix but only like the first seasons for a lot of the shows, including regular show, which is a bummer since the ones they have on there are so good.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the 2003 series, which is more action packed and story driven than its 1987 predecessor. It's around season four where things start to wind down, and in season six they go to the future, which you can skip if you want and go straight to season seven, which is the last one. I loved watching it every Saturday morning back when it was on the air.

The Boondocks. It has clever comedy and I love it for that reason. It's way better than Family Guy in my opinion.

Star Wars: Clone Wars, the 2003-2005 micro-series. It's like Samurai Jack, but with Star Wars, which makes it awesome.

Scooby-Doo in most of its incarnations.

Also, Johnny Bravo, as mentioned above, is hilarious.

Sea Lab: 2021 was pretty good. I stopped watching Adult swim after I graduated Highshool, In 2004, One of the last things I realy remember getting invested in was Full Metal Alchemist.

But a week or two ago I put on a bunch of anime i hadent watched, ever, because I didnt really feel like watching quicklooks.

If you are into cute girls, but not in a perverted way, then you might like azumanga daioh.

I also watched like half an episode of Neon Genesis Evangelion. Until i remember how emo the guy was, and how much an ass everyone else was. Kinda makes you think, perhaps the whole series was a statement about how people should not be saved.

@aegon: Are you open to watching anime? Baccano is essentially a Tarantino movie in animated form, Yu Yu Hakusho is a pretty good martial arts anime (think Dragonball Z, but with far, far lower "power levels" and more interesting characters). Full Metal Alchemist and FMA: Brotherhood, of course. Cowboy Bebop is often considered a classic, even among those who don't watch anime. Samurai Champloo is something of a sister series to Cowboy Bebop, only in ancient Japan, and it's also pretty good. The first half of Darker Than Black is pretty good, and not as angsty as its name and opening credits make it seem. And finally, the first half of Durarara is mostly brilliant and pretty funny, though its second half loses any semblance of "clever" and just becomes "bland and stupid". Fortunately, you don't really need that second half.

How in the HELL has no one mentioned Gargoyles? It's a pretty serious series with great voice work by people like Keith David, Marina Sirtis, and Johnathan Frakes, not to mention a shit-ton of others. Such a fantastic show. Just skip the follow up The Goliath Chronicles. It was done by Greg wiseman, who has done a bunch of other great shows since, like Spectacular Spider-man, and Young Justice. His shows never last long, but they're some of the best out there.

There are a bunch of great shows people have already mentioned but I want to reinforce some support for those that said Freakazoid, Animaniacs, Boondocks, and Megas XLR. Man, I can't believe other people remember Megas.

Animaniacs

Gargoyles

Batman: TAS This series has aged like a fine wine. The animation, the writing, the orchestral score. Superb stuff.

ExoSquad (No one ever mentions the super awesome Exosquad...)

I have fond memories of the Marvel cartoons (X-Men, Spider Man) but I think they've aged horribly and weren't really good in the first place.

Also, the recently deceased Sym-Bionic Titan MUST be mentioned. It only aired last year, but was tragically cancelled. Created by Genndy Tartakovsky of Dexter, PPG, and Samurai Jack fame. That one season is super excellent.
