@Hunter5024: well it's all heavily steeped in asian culture, more than most anime, which is why people wanted the characters to be asian.

and bond was conceived as white because it was the 50's (I think).

and also Elba is a known actor, those kids were not.

Got to admit, that would be awesome and completely unexpected. Was a huge fan of his work on Luther.

fuck yes. loved the hell out of that show so so much.

Cumberpatch I would be down with but I do wonder if he looks a bit young?

@Animasta: Those sound kind of like excuses to me, but whatever, like I said I don't really care about James Bond, I just feel like it's a little racist, or at the very least hypocritical to be cool with one and not the other. But if so many people think he'd be awesome for it, I'm sure he would be.

Simon Pegg

Put a Scot back in the role!

Sean Connery, still sexy enough to handle it.

Oh and about black guy as Bond, please no. I don't care if he is the best actor of all time, don't change the character even more, the old 50s silly James I love is already dying. Being black would just be a giant nail in the coffin.

The name's Bell... Stringer Bell.

While I think it would be AWESOME for Elba to be the new Bond... I don't want him to have that microscope of being the first Black Bond... but I will say this, if that man isn't a Bond Villian before it is all said and done, we, as a society, have fucked up.

I have read through seven pages of this thread and my favourite answers are still Karl Pilkington and David Mitchell. Who embodies the spirit of Britain more than David Mitchell? I guess if you want a serious answer Tom Hardy or David Tennant would be good too.

@Kadayi: Um no. Bond is not someone in their late twenties. That is way too young for the character. Bond is supposed to be in his early 40's.

Even Connery, who was in his early to mid thirties in reality(in the 60's), could pass for someone in their 40's when he played the character.

I'm talking from the perspective of making films (which take a long time) and having an actor for a franchise of films. With books, the characters don't age, sadly with films (and TV series) actors do. Casting someone late 20s to play 30 onward makes sense, otherwise you end up with Roger Moore before too long.

I don't have a problem with a non-white actor playing Bond, but he has to be British as fuck. Connery affected a British accent and was so liked by Flemming that he wrote Bond has a half-Scott half-Swiss heritage later on, Lazenby was so stiff that his suit had more charisma (and as such, his nationality didn't matter much), and the rest are as British as you need.

Paint him purple if you like, but make sure he makes me think of tea, Big Ben and all that other stereotypical bullshit when I close my eyes and listen.

I'm quite surprised they didn't cast Ben Cumbie as the new Q.

Honestly whoever they pick for the next Bond will probably be alright, it's not a very demanding role as Bond's persona and traits are pretty flexible usually conform to the actor playing him as opposed to the opposite. Also people don't really expect much from bond other than to drive a nice car, turn up in a tux once in a while order a martini, utter a few smug one-liners and attempt to bed most of the female cast. It's the villain I am most concerned with. Bond movies pretty much live or die on the quality of their villain.

Personally I'd like to see more female villains, could also be interesting seeing as women are one of 007's greatest weaknesses.

@MonkeyKing1969: Well cause its not the character? Its not like changing Bonds skin color. In order for a female Bond character to work you would completely change or omit certain support characters(and how they interact).

You would have to completely rewrite the character to where it would become unrecognizable. This is the same problem writers for BSG ran into with Starbuck. The difference is that Starbuck, in the original BSG, was not a cultural icon(he was also a flimsy character). So they could take as many liberties as they wanted and rewrite the character as their own.

Oh, by all means explain how it is not 'the character'? No, really, explain to me what we know about Bond that precludes a female? Bond's military career (Navy Intelligence) is one open to women, Mi6 has real women field agents...since 1909, all the universities/colleges attended are co-ed, all the physical features and medical conditions are those that can be had by either gender. There is not one item on the character's CV the precludes a woman or requires a re-write.

I would say Joseph-Gordon Levitt, but I think he's too young. Maybe after the next 2 Bonds.

Idris Elba would be really cool, I'd like to see a Bond that's not white.

@MonkeyKing1969: Well,  the whole womanizing sorta-misogynist thing? Unless you mean to reboot the character again and ignore the events of Casino Royale/Quantum of Solace (Vesper is kind of the reason why Bond treats everybody he sleeps with like they're expendable), and have the new Bond woman have a similar attitude towards men...or women and be gay, but that's an awful lot to change. Or maybe just gender-flip everybody, do the origins again, so the new 007 lady gets betrayed by a dude. Man, I dunno.

What I think I'm trying to say is that Bond being something of a emotionally fucked "male chauvinistic pig" is one of the things that's recognizable about the character and it's one of the good things (i think) that's been introduced in the last few movies to highlight that being a 00 agent isn't all that great! At least, to me. His relationships with women (especially his placing M in a maternal role for the last several movies) is something that defines him. You could do similar (or maybe even the same things) with a woman as 007, but I feel like you'd have to go back and properly tell the origins again and that's an awful lot of work to do and some legitimate character development in a franchise notorious for not giving a shit about character development that you'd have to scrap just to take a shot at having a woman be 007. But maybe I just think too much about the Bond franchise and nobody really cares about any of that stuff.

All that being said if they do plan to reboot the whole damn thing again then I'd say by all means take a shot at having a woman be Bond. That could cool. I personally thought Naomie Harris was pretty charismatic in Skyfall, wouldn't mind her taking a crack the role. I just think that for once they're actually doing something with the Bond character consistently and I'd like to see them keep trying with that for a while before they try something as big as changing his gender.

Not to mention what happens when that hypothetical female Bond character ends her time period. Are you just going right back to make it a man again? I'm all for making tweeks but its fairly unworkable.

That doesn't mean I'm against making a movie about a female 00 agent. Hell, one of the 00 agents in Thunderball was female. But she wasn't James Bond.

The character is too iconic to change his gender. You may as well make an argument for Batman, Superman, or Darth Vader being female characters.

Edit: as non-Brit I meant "The Islands" as I am fully aware Sean Connory was Scottish.

And Brosnan is an Irishman

Sean Connery was one of the best Brits to play Bond.

I don't think there should ever be a 007 after Daniel Craig. In fact they should erase the entire 007 franchise prior to Daniel Craig because he's on a whole other level.
