So there has been a little question that has been buzzing around in my head for a while now. "Why do gamers hate Facebook?" is the question i constantly find myself pondering. I think the answer to this question has a variety of aspects to it, with the first part being that gamer's already have a social network. Forums are the backbone of social networking, they offer a lot of the same aspects of a "Facebook" or "Twitter" but with one key feature, Anonymity. On forums and on the web the user is, for the most part, completely anonymous, so what they say does not reflect upon them, simply the persona that they create. When you think about it, Facebook is just a giant forum system with some extra features thrown in, Facebook is used to talk to your friends about similar interests. So am i missing anything or is there another reason for why gamers hate Facebook?

I used to be on Facebook, but it became to much of a hassle. Twitter is a far better social networking site and I stand by that.

Oh and I lost all respect for you when you said gamers...

I use Facebook and Twitter every day and I also love playing games. Guess I should start hating Facebook now just to jump on the bandwagon with the rest of the people hating on it. Only difference being I actually used Facebook before I suddenly hated it

Because I hate everything, especially anything involved with the word 'social'.

facebook? more like fadbook amirite?

I hate Facebook because I just hate it, not because Im a gamer.

You may as well have asked "Why do Dog Lovers hate Facebook?"

There's nothing exclusively "gamer-related" about the rationale you provide.

Gamers hate Facebook? That's quite an assumption.

I personally dislike facebook because it is just a way for people who I used to know and don't like to try and get in contact with me. Anyone who I actually care about I have telephone numbers and email addresses to use to keep in touch. Facebook is just filled with people who I hate trying to get in touch with me and act like we're best friends. We're not best friends. I don't like you!!! Stop talking to me!!!

Now, that has nothing to do with my like for video games, and plenty of gamers do like Facebook. And plenty of non-gamers don't like facebook. It's a bit of a generalisation to say that gamers don't like facebook.

I get those people on Facebook a lot, I just man up and tell them that instead, the results are better in many ways. sometimes they get it and go "ok, cool. Well bye" or they freak out and get angry(my personal favorite)

#11 Posted by StickyW3b (121 posts) -

I enjoy social networking......and I enjoy video games....

What I would like to see in the future though is connecting sites like facebook with your PSN and XBLA that way you could add friends on your facebook friendlist with XBLA or PSN.

Wait, gamers hate Facebook? I used both that and Twitter daily.

#13 Posted by laserbolts (5311 posts) -

Because it's cool to hate popular things apparently.

Facebook's pretty alright. It's a convenient way to stay in touch with duders.

The only reason I dislike facebook is the people I went to highschool with and my family can rot it in Hell. They don't deserve any updates on my life much less daily updates.

The friends I kept in touch with use IM so we communicate that way.

Me not liking facebook has NOTHING to do with me being a gamer and more about be being a spiteful human being.

GOOOOOOOOOO SPITE!

EDIT: In fact I have a fake facebook account just FOR gaming since a lot of games and companies do extras and deals for games through facebook.

I don't hate facebook because i play games, i just hate it because its shit. Why shouldn't i hate it? why do i need it?

#18 Posted by Dogma (943 posts) -

I too use Facebook. I find it quite useful. It has almost replaced Messenger as a communication tool. You can also get some cool information on Facebook that you otherwise may have missed. There is a lot of junk there too but if you filter out the good and useful parts it quite nice. Twitter has not worked as well for me. I can be because I live in Sweden and that Twitter haven't had as big impact here as in USA.

I'm a gamer and I don't hate Facebook, it's a good way to organise stuff

#20 Posted by coakroach (2488 posts) -

Facebook makes people try too hard.

#21 Posted by Fizzy (384 posts) -

I don't have a facebook but I don't hate it. I was never a big fan of social networking sites and putting my name/face on the internet.

#22 Posted by Athadam (673 posts) -

I think that's a vast generalization. There are so many different types of people and gamers. Not all gamers hate facebook. Not all gamers even use facebook. And you hating/loving facebook really just depends on your friends. Do you like them? Do they like you?

Anyways, aside from the technicalities, one reason the stereotype hardcore gamer would hate facebook is because of all the games that have sprung from these social networking sites. Many serious gamers consider them too casual and an insult to "real" games. These gamers also may be offended when people just don't understand why they play so much or spend so much on their hobby.

It's pretty self explanatory. People isolate you when you a bit obsessed/involved with your own personal hobby.

Solution: Get better friends/gamer friends.

I don't hate Facebook, but this is exactly the reason why I have no use for it.

I don't hate Facebook, but it sure can be frustrating. I just can't seem to win Facebook. From what I understand, the object of the game is to get the most players into your friends list. I just can't compete with my friends that do not play video games. Their friends score is like waaay higher than mine.

#25 Posted by Liber (648 posts) -

I don't hate facebook .. well actually I do after that horrible update that fucked up the page layout even more.

#26 Posted by probablytuna (3540 posts) -

I don't hate Facebook. Not yet anyway.

#27 Posted by SeanFoster (856 posts) -

I don't hate Facebook. I deactivated mine recently though, I found I was checking it more out of habit and not because I was really enjoying anything on it.

I'd have a lot of trouble giving up Twitter though.

Because I don't like having my personal data, which is open to the public and is duly parsed through government computers on a daily basis??

Or is privacy a dead concept these days?

You still believe in privacy? That's adorable <3

How did you come to the conclusion that gamers hate Facebook? I'm sure there are a lot of gamers that like it or just don't care either way.

No I don't.

But I damn well try my best to make sure that I make life difficult for those that want my data.

Unlike most I'm not willing to just give it away like an imbecile. Principles are at stake.

#32 Posted by MooseyMcMan (10484 posts) -

I think it's dumb and pointless.

#33 Posted by Matoya (416 posts) -

Because they think it's cool to have no friends.

#34 Posted by Jolt92 (1542 posts) -

I just don't like Facebook. Too much internet drama, people that I don't care about / never knew, add me to their friends list for the sake of having more friends (I guess), shitty site, shitty chat everything just sucks. I don't think GAMAHS hate Facebook I think some people hate Facebook.

#35 Posted by TobbRobb (4581 posts) -

Why do "generalised group" "feel" "thing"?

That said, I quite enjoy a gaming session every now and then, and I don't ever use Facebook. Can't say I hate it though, I just don't give a shit about it.

#36 Posted by Twisted_Scot (1175 posts) -

I don't use social networking as I'm not social. If you are a friend of mine then we are in contact, if you haven't heard form me in years, take a hint. I do however agree with your assumption that "Gamers" claim to not like facebook as they would rather remain anonymous. I'm sure If you could look up half the people who are dicks on Game forums they would be repressed or spoiled14 years old kids. I may be a dick but that's not because I'm hiding behind the veil of the Internet, my family and friends all me one all the time. Consistency is the key.

#37 Posted by Brendan (7690 posts) -

I like it. Let's be honest, though: Non-anonymous socializing and game enthusiasts (not all of them) don't exactly mix, so you can't be surprised that it's not their particular subset's cup of tea.

#38 Edited by CookieMonster (2416 posts) -

Its okay. I view it as just another way I can have banter with my friends.

#39 Posted by FreakAche (2949 posts) -

Because as Bobby Kotick stated in my former avatar, "Haters gonna hate!"

#40 Posted by Teoball (575 posts) -

I talk to my family and friends on the phone when I want. I have no need to see what they're up to every moment of the day.

#41 Posted by Fobwashed (1901 posts) -

I have and use facebook. I don't think the anonymity thing matters that much on it as you pretty much only share your stuff with people you know and have added.

Online
#42 Posted by Everyones_A_Critic (6287 posts) -

Because anything popular isn't cool on the internet. That's all there is. People will say they don't like their info on the internet like that but the fact is that it's probably been out there for the last decade without them even knowing about it. You can find anyone on the internet these days, who gives a fuck is Joe Schmo's address is out there?

#43 Posted by TaliciaDragonsong (8698 posts) -

I'm a gamer and I love facebook and sites like it.

But I hate hamsters...what now?

#44 Posted by RedEyesBlueBunny (1011 posts) -

you writing an essay or something?

#45 Posted by ShadowMoses900 (190 posts) -

Uhh....you shouldn't make broad sweeping statements like that. I know alot of "gamers" who use facebook and seem to enjoy it and I know a lot of non gamers who do not. Personally I don't use Facebook very much anymore because I simply get annoyed with some of the people on there. Some people take Facebook WAY too seriously if you know what I mean, and sometimes I get tired of my friends who always say stupid things like "Oh I just broke up with my GF/BF" or "Oh I'm so ugly so I'm going to fish for compliments" come on people!

I have no problem going on there and asking a few friends if they want to hang out later or something, but I can't understand why people use it for much of anything else to be honest....
#46 Edited by Still_I_Cry (2494 posts) -

I don't mind Facebook. I don't want every game company on Earth to start creating farming sims because of Facebook's success on that front. I doubt they will, so yeah, no problems with Facebook.

#47 Posted by Arker101 (1474 posts) -

I don't hate it, I just don't want to use it, and I'm tired of the stereotype "If you'r not on facebook then you'r a real hipster." I don't have or need 200 friends and if I want to get in contact with the ones I have I'll send them a text or call them. Twitter is cool for following celebritys, and that's all I use it for.

#48 Posted by masterpaperlink (1829 posts) -

because they have no use for it

#49 Posted by Elusionar (309 posts) -

Facebook is just a spam tool.

#50 Edited by MrKlorox (11206 posts) -

My issue with facebook is the demand from others to be on it or to like stupid things they post. Fuck that.

Twitter is fine because there's no pressure involved, unless you're famous. It fits my antisocial social networking needs. The ONLY thing Facebook is good for is "liking" things for rewards (I got Red Orchestra for free on Steam for liking RO2 during a competition).
